My name is Omaira Benitez. My program of study is professional counseling. A personal goal of mine is to be successful in life. A professional goal of mine is to become a licensed professional counselor (LPC). I would like to learn how to respond to trauma that some of my clients may have and how to better assist them. I currently work as a sex offender probation officer, and I enjoy my job. Working in my position, I work closely with a licensed sex offender treatment provider, which has been catching some of my attention. Hi guys! My name is Omaira Benitez. My program of study is professional counseling. I am currently in my 2nd semester of the master’s program. I started the master’s program in January. Upon graduation, I hope to become an LPC. I currently work as a probation officer with sex offenders, and I plan to continue to work with them once I become an LPC. At first, I wanted to work with juveniles, but as I started to work with adults, I became more comfortable with adults. One of my goals in this course is to gain a deeper understanding of trauma. I don't have much background in trauma, but I do believe that trauma can cause an individual to have severe mental health issues. I want to learn about the different trauma responses as well.

My biggest takeaway after reviewing the resources would be that mental health is very serious, and a lot of individuals suffer from a mental health disorder. Growing up in our culture, I felt like it was almost shameful to have anxiety or depression. I don’t have much educational background when it comes to trauma or any mental health disorders. With the information that I learn in this course, I will be able to apply it in my LPC role. I believe that there are some mental health issues associated with the individuals I will work with. Results indicated that substance abuse or dependence, personality disorder, psychosis, any psychiatric disorder, and any inpatient care were significantly associated with sexual recidivism. ( Kingston et al., 2015 ) It is shown that these mental health disorders are associated with sexual recidivism. It is important for the counselor to completely understand what mental health issues an individual may have that may have caused them to commit a crime.

Reference Guide for Mental Health Disorders

Doing this Reference Guide helped me understand the mental health disorders. Some of the mental health disorders I wasn't too familiar with so it allowed for me to do research to better understand the disorders. The disorders mentioned in the document above showed that they are shaped by different factors such as biological, psychological, and social influences. Understanding the early intervention allows for there to be a reduction in the symptoms but also prevents long-term issues from occurring such as chronic illness and relapse. This quick Reference guide allows for me to get the information that is needed to get a quick understanding of the mental health disorders.

Developmental Discussion on Trauma

This week's assignment covered trauma. The first discussion post was on the current knowledge of trauma and its relevance to our role as future counselors. Coming into this course, I did not have extensive knowledge regarding trauma; however, over the previous weeks, I have conducted independent research and learned many new things. In my role as a future counselor, I may encounter clients who deal with trauma, so it is important to understand and know how to address trauma.

We were asked to view a documentary that showed trauma, and were asked to provide our thoughts before and after viewing. The documentary I viewed was actually really interesting and helped me see how trauma can take a toll on individuals.

This crisis prevention and threat assessment allowed a fellow classmate and I to work together on the subject of juman and sex trafficking. I personally chose this topic because I am a probation officer and work with sex offenders, which makes it particularly interesting to me. With the research that the group did, we were able to look at the aspect of human trafficking and sex trafficking and the relation to counseling.

ABC crisis model

Using the ABC crisis model helped us learn about some of the traumas that our future clients may encounter. The case study I chose was Rosas, which was:

"Rosa is a 35-year-old Hispanic woman. She lives in a run down apartment complex and relies on partial welfare benefits to make ends meet. When you talk to her, she is tearful, nervous and extremely anxious, apologizing for inconveniencing you.

For the past four and a half years, Rosa has worked as a housekeeper for an area motel, often working overtime to help pay bills. She has three children, a son who is 12 and two daughters, ages 9 and 4. Neighbors are enlisted to help watch the kids whenever possible but she is sometimes forced to leave them home alone under her son’s supervision. Rosa’s husband, a non-Hispanic, left her two and a half years ago, shortly after the birth of her last child. He has a history of alcohol abuse and a violent temper. During the marriage, he frequently abused her and on several occasions, left bruises after an all night drinking binge. He has rarely paid any child support since leaving but drifts back into the area every now and then. She suspects that he was unfaithful to her more than once.

You discover that he showed up unexpectedly last night, forced his way into the apartment and then beat her up and sexually assaulted her when she refused to give him any more money. The police were never called after the incident or in the past either because of her fears for further violence. She’s not sure if he will return or not but has some concerns over the children because they witnessed the events of the previous evening. Again, Rosa is apologetic for “burdening” you with her problems and expresses a lot of shame and embarrassment.

Rosa quickly changes the subject and spends some time sharing her concerns for her son who is becoming increasingly moody, withdrawn and non-communicative. He seems to be depressed. For the first time that she can remember, he is not finishing assignments at school and his grades are dropping. The reason for her talking with you is to get him some help. Her only family, consisting of her mother and two sisters, live in Texas. She had moved to South Carolina 7 years ago when her husband was in the military. He left the army after eight years. "

Using the ABC model helped me break down Rosas' situation and develop a better approach. I beelie this will be something I use in the future.
