Ditch that textbook gave great examples and stories on giving students a way to interact and be involved in class, when otherwise they would not want to. Some students do not feel comfortable sharing what they know or asking questions in class but the use of technology can bring out the student you thought was hiding. Shake Up Learning shared the art of curiosity and technology. Technology is worthless if not used correctly and freely. Technology is expanding and so are student minds. They have the ability to learn so much more at their finger tips.

Matt Miller gave a great personal account in Ditch that textbook about how technology can involve normally reclusive students in different ways. Kay wouldn't talk during group projects/presentations, but was much more free to talk during a back channel application used in class. In Shake Up Learning, Kasey Bell talked primarily of how while technology should be used in solving our problems, it should not be the end all be all solution to them. she especially spoke of how we need to apply these new technologies in new ways, not just to use old techniques. As she noted in the book, it's not about Google but about how we use Google to encourage learning. It makes me wish there had been more of this used back when I was in the public school system.

Matt Miller created a way for her to speak her mind by using a backchannel. I think that this is an important tool to use in a classroom because it makes any shy students feel safe to express their opinions without having to speak out loud. In Shake Up Learning, it talked about how technology is expanding and how students should have creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

In "Ditch that Textbook," something that really stuck with me was, "technology provides outlets that let even the shyest students feel comfortable enough to be themselves." You will always have students that are too shy or too insecure to share their thoughts/opinions out loud in class because of fear of classmates (unfortunately) being judgmental or laughing at them. It's important to always have these kinds of tools available in the classroom so that those specific students have a way to share their thoughts and opinions without fearing humiliation and while feeling comfortable at the same time doing so. In Shake Up Learning, I like the point Kasey Bell made about how preparing students for the future is NOT just about using technology constantly. There are multiple paths that lead to more meaningful learning for students that actually do not require any technology... You can still use old techniques and have students be engaged and still learning.

Ditch that textbook and Shake up Learning discusses how we can use technology to expand our learning and how we learn with our students. You can use multiple teaching strategies at once by using the technological advancements that have been made. It allows students to be creative as well. Say a student has anxiety about answering questions orally in class; you can do anonymous quizzes where you are still able to assess students without giving them anxiety. In the Shake up Learning I really enjoyed how it talked about its not what we use but how we use it as far as technology goes. And that is so true. We can have so much available but if we just put half effort into it and don’t try to relate it, the outcomes will not be as great as they could be.

In Ditch That Textbook, Miller says something that really got me thinking. He wrote, “technology can be the difference between isolation and inclusion”. So many students struggle with getting involved and technology provides them with alternatives so they can have a voice. He also talked about how students can be at a disadvantage of not figuring out their passions or what inspires them. With technology, our students have all of the resources in the world to follow their interests. They can now learn how much they want, about just about anything.

In Shake Up Learning, I liked Bell's point about allowing our students to "practice the art of curiosity by giving them the same freedoms entrepreneurs have, including: authority over their time, resources, and what they create. Educators need to realize that students now require a different set of skills than past generations to be successful, and maybe the way of teaching them, is taking a step back and giving them more control over their learning.

In ditch my textbook the author was talking about certain learning styles that benefit directly through the use of technology. Some students feel uncomfortable speaking their minds one at a time in a crowded class or especially presenting in the very front of the class. But, through technology there are different apps you can use so children can share their input simultaneously. It also made the analogy that if you want to learn about robotics, but are stuck in English class but a textbook, your out of luck. With technology any child can do a report on or learn about whatever subject they want. In shaking up learning the author wrote about allowing kids to use their curiosity to boost their imagination and creative thinking. It also made the point that technology is often known to make life easier, but it does not do the job for you. Its how the teacher makes the classroom use the apps that matters. There is still plenty of good in traditional learning, as well as careers and fields. My personal thoughts to ditch my textbook was that technology should be used freely in classrooms. Students should be allowed to freely work on their computer for taking notes, researching information, and completing assignments. I do not agree with shaking up learning that old traditions can sometimes be more beneficial for learning. I think it is okay for a teacher to to not personally use technology and lecture traditionally, but he or she may not limit their students from their use of technology.

In Ditch That Textbook, Miller wrote about her regret with a student named Kay. I thought it was really inspiring to read about. We all as teachers worry about getting our students to participate, and as for Miller, he found a way to get all students to feel comfortable and where they feel they can share their thoughts. In Shake Up Learning, it discusses how technology is not the problem for all situations, and I do believe that as well but it is very helpful too. Bell talks about making sure teachers are update on technology and knowing how to use technology is the key to success too. So imagine that Miller did not have the technology skills, Kay would still not be participating and Miller would still be trying to force her out of her comfort zone. But thankfully, he thought of Backchannels and now Kay participates in all discussions. When I was in elementary schools I was always worried about saying the wrong answer and I wish we would have had something like a backchannel so not everyone would be looking at me. Like Bell said, Technology may not be the solution but for Kay it was and maybe it would have been a solution to me. Having teachers up to date of technology is important for every student. So let's "shake it up" and "ditch that textbook."

I believe that we can create dynamic learning experiences and empower students by using technology in the most optimal way possible. This can be achieved by focusing on students as a group and as individuals. When this is done, we can create learning experiences they truly will feel are dynamic.

When Miller talked about Kay and the backchannel it made me happy. I loved how he was able to find something that empowered his student. A lot of educators can be harsh and not consider things like shyness because of “the real world”. I also loved how it changes everyday discussion in the classroom. It’s dynamic because it takes something so common and makes it compatible to the individual student as they work as a group. Another thing that Miller mentioned about technology stood out to me. He talked a lot about how technology we have at hand gives students the chance to be an individual. This aspect of technology he says, “opens students minds to new possibilities and empower them to explore what drives them” (Miller, 2015, p.25). This can mean that students have endless choices and can learn anything they feel interested in. I think this means that teachers must introduce this world to students during learning. Not many students have access to this knowledge.

When I read Shake Up Learning Bell brought up many great points. She talked a lot about traditional learning and what that meant for students. Bell says, “With learning at our fingertips, traditional schooling and learning methods are being pushed to the wayside” (2018, p.17). I believe that this is an answer to how we can make learning experiences dynamic. We should try new methods, and it is likely that students will individually feel that something works best for them. As a result, this empowers them and how they make learning choices. They simply do what works best. Bell also points out how to use technology other than as a solution. I think this is something we need to keep in mind. If we use technology as a solution, then I feel like it starts to go back to how things were before.

We can change the way students learn because we can give them a voice when they wouldn’t necessarily speak up in the classroom. Some students are very shy and do not want to speak out in front of their peers and teachers should not penalize them for this, but rather change the way we teach. Our world is constantly changing in the ways we create and use technology and so should we. We can use what we learn from what our students know about technology to our advantage to help them learn in the best way possible. This effort was described in “Ditch that Textbook” when the author discussed how one student was participating in discussion when it was through an online platform versus in front of the entire class. When she was asked to talk in front of her peers, she chose to have points taken off instead. This turned out penalizing her because she was not able to showcase her ideas to the teacher and the class. Teachers need to understand that many jobs that students will eventually have, are jobs that require them to be able to communicate with technology and in person. We should teach so that students feel comfortable doing both.

We can use technology to create dynamic learning experiences by allowing students to express their knowledge in multiple ways, such as twitter chats or fun games like kahoot. By doing this, we can bring out the shiest students from their shells and see how much potential they have. Speaking aloud and volunteering to share is not for everyone, so using technology can definitely benefit those who just aren’t comfortable with speaking. In Ditch That Textbook Chapter 3, Matt Miller expresses how he once had a student who was so uncomfortable with speaking that she let it affect her grades. Although he was never really able to connect with her, trying a new tool in his class helped him spark an interest in her that he was once not able to see. In Shake Up Learning Chapter 4, Kasey Bell lets educators know to seize the opportunity to use technology with purpose. Using technology to differentiate and personalize lessons year after year will let ALL students know their voice matters.
