He remained a resident of Columbia until his college years during which he studied painting and English on a basketball scholarship at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina. Aside from his natural gift in the fine arts, Hayes was a standout athlete as well, receiving the honor of Academic All American for the Coker College Men’s Basketball team. After earning his BA at Coker College, he received his MFA from the University of Pittsburgh, where he later went on to co-found the Center for African American Poetry and Politics. His career as a professor began at Carnegie Mellon University and continued at the University of Alabama, University of Pittsburgh, and currently as a professor of English at New York University. Hayes was the 2017-2018 poetry editor for New York Times Magazine. His poetry is widely renowned for its common themes of pop culture, masculinity, race, and music, addressing both sides of every controversy. His poetry collections have been finalists or winners for nine awards including the National Book Award. His enthusiastic charisma is accentuated in all of his works, including poetry, music, and visual art. Hayes is an avid piano player. In addition, he carries a tin of paper and pencils everywhere he goes for whenever he feels a creative spark. He currently lives in New York and shares custody of his two children with his ex-wife, Yona Harvey.
