THE row about a jocular conversation between BBC presenter John Humphrys and Jon Sopel, its North America editor, about equal pay and in particular the pay of Carrie Gracie, former China editor, risks getting out of proportion. This was not a serious exchange; it was not meant to be broadcast.
Yet the underlying issue is serious: the gender pay gap. The BBC has been an egregious case in point, as a publicly funded body — quite apart from the case of Ms Gracie. Many licence fee payers, though, will feel that if there is a disparity between the sexes' pay, it would be best resolved by reducing inflated male salaries. But this is a wider problem. From April, bigger employers will be legally obliged to publish their pay for men and women, making clear the extent of the disparity. Women may well feel that the inequity this will reveal is no laughing matter.
