Step 5: Summary of Ethical Decision Making

Ethical decision making is an important topic because it is a prominent daily challenge student affairs practitioners encounter.

Issues that were mentioned, within the articles, were racial discrimination, unlegal reporting practices and balancing the student's needs versus the educational institutions policies.

As a future student affairs practitioner, it is important for me to understand the educational institution’s policies for students and know how to protect the students. The dilemma is choosing the best course of action for the situation because ethical decision making is not always having a black and white answer. For example, what I deem as an unethical decision, others may see as being ethical. According to McDonald, Ebelhar, Orehovec and Sanderson (2006), “Another objection to ethical decision-making lies in the fact that ethical dilemmas are by definition unsolvable” (p. 154).

Step 2: Exploration Option 1 - Top 5 Ethical/Legal Issues According to Derrick Worrels

I interviewed Derrick Worrels, the current Vice President of Student Affairs for Ranger College. The current legal and ethical issues impacting his role as a Student Affair administrator are as follows:

1. The Clery Act is a legal requirement that impacts his line of work, by requiring Mr. Worrels to provide transparency in reporting on policies, campus crimes and statistics. The Clery Act is important because Ranger College is federally funded and requires the college to follow reporting requirements of The Clery Act.

2. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is another legal requirement that he must abide by. As a Vice President of Student Affairs, it is important for Mr. Worrels to protect the students' academic records and personal information. In failing to follow FERPA, Ranger College's federal funding would be at risk.

3. Understanding how to make ethical decisions. For instance, being prepared to make decisions that are in conflict of your own personal set of values and standards, to support campus policy.

4. Title IX is a legal requirement that Mr. Worrels must enforce among all students, faculty and staff, within the educational institution. This legal requirement prohibits discrimination based on sex.

5. Mr. Worrels said it was important to remain unbiased when adopting policies and procedures regarding campus carry laws. This is to help ensure campus safety for all students, faculty and staff.

(D. Worrels, personal communication, March 18, 2019)
