We placed four self-care tickets in in staff mailboxes and invited them to set aside time to focus on activities that help feed thier mind, body, and spirit with what it needs to perform at its best. They were asked to document it and then submit the ticket in the box.    Thanks to the generosity of many Bishop Corner businesses, we pulled tickets for a variety of prizes.

Through student-driven discussions, children generated their own groups to aid in two specific areas in which they felt there was injustice they could not live with: animal abuse and the foster care system. We met with them after each training and plan to meet again later in May. We have been generating ideas on how to roll out RULER in our district next year. We set the theme of this year's Stroll as "Emotions". We emphasized practicing emotional intelligence, in hopes to spread awareness and prompt emotionally intelligent learning throughout the Fairhaven community. This year, we focused on Cedella Marley’s story, “Every Little Thing” and followed the main character as he navigates different emotions and experiences. The students of both schools created process-based artwork with Mood Meter colors while exploring and discussing different emotions. These works lined the stroll route. We created an interactive, Emotional Intelligence Information Booth to act as the hub of the festival. At the booth, we had a display of developmentally appropriate books which focused on a range of emotions. We provided resources for parents, including a QR cod where they can access RULER’s emotional literacy book list as well as information on how they can implement emotional intelligence at home, in English and Spanish. While visiting the EI booth, community members helped to build an, "emotional vocabulary" wall. They added their own emotional vocabulary words to boards containing the prompt phrases, "I like to feel..." and "I need support when I feel...". Children learned how to navigate the Mood Meter, and took part in painting four large canvases, each with a different Mood Meter color. Some of the most valuable interactions at the booth were the in-depth conversations had between ourselves and members of the community who wished to gain a better understanding of EI. It is a collaboration program between the high school and our local youth services. This collaboration allows students to volunteer at the high school and in the community. The students at the high school participate in four activities. 1. Peer tutoring. 2. Peer Mentoring (Students go into classes with me to help with lessons, role model appropriate behavior, and assist struggling students. 3. Peer welcoming (Students tour new students to the high school). 4. Wellbeing Committee. The students were trained in mentoring and the wellbeing committee presented to the board of education in November to get approval for two events: the first ever "Naugatuck Great Kindness Challenge" district and community wide and a graduation walk for seniors which will be held the week before graduation. Graduating seniors will be visiting ten K-8 schools in two days.
The  "Naugatuck Great Kindness Challenge" was held February 22-26, 2018 and it was a huge success. Per the students’ request, the superintendent made "The Great Kindness Challenge" a district wide initiative and the mayor declared it “Great Kindness Week” in Naugatuck. All schools were invited to participate and every school in the district did an amazing job. At the high school, on Monday morning students handed out little pieces of paper with “Kindness Matters” and “Naugy Cares” on them as students entered school. There was a kindness announcement every morning, and during lunch, students could sign a kindness banner and fill out a thank you card for someone who helped them. The students also designed beautiful shirts that they sold town wide through Custom Ink as a fundraiser and they raised over $3,500.00.

They also created a handmade trifold poster board for every school in the district and made 12x18 posters for every classroom in the district. The posters were the same color and design as the front and back of the maroon shirt. 

They also asked our culinary students make “Kindness Matters” cakes which they delivered all over town to every school for faculty and staff, the police department, the fire department, the bus company, the senior center, and the mayor’s office.

RULER was also presented to district parents at a town forum focusing on SEL.
