Pershing was a General who was highly educated and studied how different civilizations operated.  He was a strong-willed soldier and said what he meant.  Many soldiers did not like the way Pershing did things but he was able to establish one of the largest armies in a matter of months and this was one of the reason we won WWI.  Being able to control, motivate and maintain discipline is what makes General John Pershing a Great Commander.
