Take the first couple minutes of class to engage in casual conversation with your students. Ask them about their day, if they have anything exciting going on, etc. An educator can learn so much about their students and who they are in just a few short minutes each and every day. For example, if a student is always talking about books they are reading, the educator knows that they will most likely lead class discussions. This is just a great way to make stronger connections with students.

A "chill zone" will provide students with an outlet when they are feeling frustrated or overwhelmed during a lesson.

Students are always willing to share out what they did this weekend or how their day is going. When you go that little extra step to ask about their well being it shows them that you care about them more than just a body in a classroom. Sharing how you feel too also shows the students that you aren't just a teacher but a person as well that feels those same things. At the end of class, you can also ask them how they are feeling about what they learned. Are they confident? Are they unsure? This allows you to assess how the next day is going

We've all encountered "those" students at some point in time. The student who is in the corner, disengaged. The student who does the opposite of what you say. The student who is often a disturbance to other students. Instead of ONLY disciplining them, although sometimes necessary, talk to them. Ask them, "is everything okay?" "Is there something you want to talk about?" "How are things at home?" This simple gesture can go a LONG way. In their head, they likely think "wow, this teacher isn't like every other teacher who just yells at me." "This teacher is willing to understand me." I've seen it with my own eyes. After you ask this student those types of questions, they will GUARANTEED want to perform better in your class. "There is a reason for every behavior." Nick D.

Sometimes students really want to share with you something that happened at home, something new they did or tried, or maybe even something personal. If its during directions or during a lesson, make sure to acknowledge that what the student has to say is important. If it is a story ask the student if you could get through the directions or lesson first and then get back to them, BUT MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW UP! Showing that you care can help form relationships, connections, and creating a positive learning environment for the students.

CE

You can start by knowing their names, asking how their day is, asking about their interests, and overall making students feel accepted and safe. Personally, I ask how the students' day is going before I take attendance. Watching students' faces light up and feel seen and wanted is what they truly want. You never know what others are going through, so taking a moment to ask students how their day is going can spread positivity in the classroom and might make someone's day!
