The symbol that is used in the poem, "A Noiseless Patient Spider" is a spider. The spider is used to symbolize waltz soul. When spiders weave their webs they connect to each other the way Walt wants to connect to others and their experiences. "And you oh my soul where you stand, surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space, ceaselessly musing, venturing throwing, seeking the spears to connect to them."

A connotative word used repeatdely in this poem is filament. Filament can be used to describe a thin, thredlike object, like a spiders web. "it launched forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself..." I think the auther uses filament in this way to show how the isolated spider is trying to form a connection to the outside world as it builds its web. As the spider builds its web its patient and persistant in doing so, which relates to the title of the poem.

The theme of this poem is connection and isolation, specifically the isolation of ones soul compared to the rest of the world. the poem talks about a spider that is isolated in space. "... it stood isolated... it launched forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself" looking for connections as the spider constructs its web.

A figure of speech used throughout this poem would be an extended metaphor. The spider in the poem is supposed to represent the speakers soul. The author describes the spider as isolated and, "detached, in measureless oceans of space,". The author explains the spider as constantly exploring new connections and I think the author is trying to relate it to himself by him writing more poems.

Walt Whitman was born March 31 1819 . He was an American poet who is considered one of the most influential poets in American literature. He was someone who was willing to imagine others experiences and put himself in their shoes. He was known as a volatile writer, meaning he stood up for slavery, prowomens rights, immigration ect. He spoke up about real world problems. His greatest work is known as the "Leaves of Grass" which contained 300 poems. unfortunately his work wasn't appreciated untill after his passing in March 26 1892.
