Art of this time appeared very two-dimensional, an egg yolk mixture called tempera was used as paint which caused paintings to crack when dry, and religion was the central theme of most art.

During the Renaissance, humanism, the focus on the importance of the individual, and the rebirth of classical Greco-Roman themes were driving forces in art. Art was now not only used to worship God but to celebrate the individual. Rules of perspective, depth and light were created, which led to more three-dimensional looking art. Oil paints replaced tempera paint. Many monarchs were patrons to artists and commissioned their works.

Mary Shelley was a romantic writer. Her novel Frankenstein tells the story of a scientist that creates a monster.

"I saw—with shut eyes, but acute mental vision—I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life and stir with an uneasy, half-vital motion. Frightful must it be, for supremely frightful would be the effect of any human endeavor to mock the stupendous mechanism of the Creator of the world."
