Gabby Rivera: The story of Marvel’s first queer Latina superhero (By Luz Peralta)

Gabby Rivera grew up in the Bronx, surrounded by her large Puerto Rican family. Gabby's family told her stories of their pasts and fables, and she found them representing her more than the superheroes in comics did. Rivera wrote a graphic novel, called Juliet Takes a Breath, about a young Puerto Rican woman who grew up in the Bronx, writing about her own experiences with gender, oppression, and sexuality. After the graphic novel was published, Marvel reached out to Rivera to ask for her to write their new standalone comic about America Chavez, a character that had been in the universe or over 7 years, but was never put in the spotlight. America is a young lesbian Latina who can punch holes into other dimensions. Gabby eagerly accepted, excited to help other queer Latinas feel represented in the Marvel community. Rivera wanted to help America find her vulnerability, so she sent her to college and kept mixing up her life. Chavez was given a mentor to help her learn about her powers, and an Abuela to help her learn about her history. The whole point of this story is to help queer Latinas feel represented, and to help them realize that being vulnerable is not being weak, and that it is okay to ask for help. I loved this TED talk because it made me think about my own mindset, and I can't wait to read the comic!

In 2002, Ingrid Betancourt was kidnapped and held captive in unknown surroundings. Picking up the patterns day by day, never letting herself give in. Betancourt wanted to give up and just accept she was going to die out there, she learned that your whole brain and personality could be taken away from you in seconds. The bugs, sounds, forest, and trees, seeing herself in other people around her knowing she couldn't give up. Ingrid Felt real fear, resulting in depression, desperation, and hate. Ingrid talks about such an impactful story about how she learned to face her fear and develop faith. The most impactful thing i learned from Ingrid's story was realizing that you can never give up. She shows how to find peace and overcome tragic things in life.

My identity is a superpower-not an obstacle by America Ferrera. (Zoe)

Her acting career didn't start so smoothly, her first experience in having a professional audition lead to the director having her sound "more Latina", implying to make her do the stereotypical Latina accent or broken English. This had happened continuously, which was the cause of her changing herself by making her skin more paler, hiding her beautiful curls under a straightening iron, and losing weight. Until she was finally casted for a role that reflected and represented her experiences. She had two Emmy awarding movies about this topic, yet producers and companies didn't continue to talk about the topic she was representing. She was frustrated that the struggles of stereotypes aren't being talked about enough in movies or shows. Then, she found her voice against the rejection of identity due to stereotypes and inequality. She figured out that no one is supposed to change for the system, the system is supposed to change for them. "My identity is my superpower-I am what the world looks like, you are what the world looks like, we are what the world looks like."

José Andrés: How a team of chefs fed Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria (By Jazzy Morla)

The main message that José was trying to spread was the importance of doing instead of thinking about your plans to 'do things'. Throughout the video José describes how once he had heard about the tragedy that Hurricane Maria had left the state of Puerto Rico in with 95% of the island without electricity and importantly no food to feed their families. José was particularly interested in assisting bringing the people of Puerto Rico food to feed their families no matter where they are on the island, He then traveled with his friend Nick to Puerto Rico where he had contacted a food warehouse where they had food to give out to the people, But the issue was they had no idea how to come at this problem with so many people to feed in Puerto Rico. It seemed like this would need a lot more planning than José thought until he thought of a great solution. The chefs of the community was his idea he then reached out to seemingly all the chefs he knew on the island and spread around the word that they were there to feed Puerto Rico. And through just the calling of the Puerto Rican chefs they all in a collective banded together to make hot meals for their communities and creating a safe haven for the hungry. They ended up reaching all the towns and cities of Puerto Rico completing their idea of wanting to feed the entire island of Puerto Rico by just doing. No plans, Just effort from the community.

America had very big dreams and her culture was an obstacle. She wanted to be an actor in Hollywood but because she wasn't like everyone else she struggled with getting there. America knew her dream wasn't going to be easy but she knew it was possible and even though people doubted her she did everything she could to become an actor. She tried many different roles, but they said "Sound more Latina." or "Someone has to tell that girl she has unreal expectations." America tried to change herself to look more American so she could be an actor like everyone else. Overtime she got around it and represented her culture in acting. she realized people actually did want to see stories about people with culture and a background like her.

I also learned to put on your oxygen mask before helping others put theirs on, because helping yourself before others can make you properly help them.

She ended with this quote that I love so much, "Our world is one that flourishes when different voices come together."

However, if you come back to messy notes, it could be difficult to put everything together and use it for your final work. Its like your train of thought ran off the tracks and curled up on itself, all messy and hard to understand. You'd want a neat, easy-to-read section of notes so that everything clicks into place when you come back to it.

The people living in Puerto Rico didn't had money in their accounts to pay for food, but the ATM machines were busted from the storm, so they couldn't withdraw their money. Jose Andres saw this and started an organization to bring food to these people for free. He didn't have a set plan for how he would deliver food to these people, he just wanted to help but he ended up successfully feeding thousands of people anyway. Jose Andre's organization made 70,000 meals a day for just one city alone.

"We all want to see ourselves as idealists and people who do what they believe in and pursue the things they find most exciting, but the realist is that very few of us have the privilege to do that." What she means by this is that all immigrants that come to the USA arrive with big dreams and goals for themselves and their families. However, hardly anyone has the resources and money to do so. This made me learn that we need to create more scholarship money for people, and making it a priority to make transportation and education free for anyone.

The most important thing I learned while watching this video is that you don't experience true fear until your in a terrible situation. In Ingrid's situation, she was a brave and courageous and spoke about what she thought was right and did all these things until February 23rd, 2002 where after she had threatened the president she had gotten kidnapped by a group of armed men who she knew was apart of the military by the way they dressed and their shoes. She was tortured by these people until the government said they would corporate and then they would let her go. She was terrified that she was gonna get killed and that was the first time she experienced true fear, even though as a kid she thought she was fearless. This is why I believe you never experience true fear until your in a terrible situation.

Ingrid, an adventurous and brave lady, had big plans from the start. she wanted to join the Colombian politics and end corruption. However, things didn't go exactly as she imagined. in-fact she likely wouldn't even be able to have imagined what happened to her. February 23, 2002, as she was a presidential candidate in Colombia, a group of armed men detained her. . They took her into the deepest depths of the jungle and warned her that if the government didn’t negotiate, they’d kill her. At first, during it all, Ingrid felt hatred- the need and want to kill who detained her. but she overcame those feelings, and her bravery saved her. Just as it had gotten her into trouble.

Latinx refers to a group of people. In the 1960's the government didn't recognize other ethnic groups/races besides black/white. And so they fought so they could also be included in the those categories. And so the term Latinx also becomes included for those who did not want to known for just one specific gender. And also the term Latinx came up with the new/ gen z generation so that everyone can feel included. But before the term Latin or Hispanic there was the term brown to describe these people.

Over time him and his team advanced to many kitchens around the Islands. Jose got Helicopter's, Food Trucks, and funding from people around the world. Jose fed millions. Jose and his team helped me realize how fortunate we are to live in America and how blessed I am.

Six Years In Captivity-Ingrid Betancourt

Ingrid Betancourt is a former Colombian senator and anti-corruption activist.

Ingrid was very popular with the citizens of Colombia for the same reason she was unpopular with the government; she regularly called out corrupt politicians, including the president for his cartel ties.

After frequent death threats she was forced to send her very young children out of the country. Soon after, she was abducted by FARC (an armed terrorist group) and taken deep into the jungle. The guerillas told Ingrid that if the government did not negotiate, than they would kill her. for years she was tormented by her captors, and began to lose parts of her memory-her former life. This included simple things like people, phone numbers, and places. One of Ingrid's captors was especially cruel, and she decided she would kill him. For weeks she planned the guards death, but in the end, Ingrid knew that to kill was to take away the scraps of humanity she had left. Six years later Ingrid was released. In interviews, news reports, and a TED Talk she said what really saved her, and her personhood was to be guided by preset principals. Even in anger and hurt, if Ingrid followed such rules, she could do no wrong. This story helped me realize that if I follow standard for how I should be treated, and how I should treat others, I will not behave in ways I'll regret, even when I am scared, frustrated, or confused.

Why Journalists have on obligation to change power.

On the TED talk video, something i learned is that the Journalist in the video, talks about life as a journalist. Key things he talked about is how being a journalist is a risky move in becoming successful with it being a gamble to work with global news associations. Another topic the journalist mentioned in how your opinion doesn't matter to the company you work for, you have to obey and do what they want you to write about to push the agenda to people who will later on read the article, if you tolerate back you will be punished. If you fight back and get fired, being a self made journalist is very rare to be successful, but the benefits are you get to write about there own opinions.

Luis H. Zayas: The psychological impact of Child seperation at the US-Mexico border

Something i learned and took to heart about this Ted talk is that little kids and families are traumatized daily at these detention center, Luis is a mental health therapist and the way he talks about how these families and especially little kids are already being traumatized and threatened in these detention center is genuinely concerning and something nobody should have to go through ever. This ted talk really does hurt my soul because these people are Mexican immigrants and it hurts to know that they leave their homeland to find more peace and come to the land of hopes and dreams and instead get treated horribly and get treated even worse than how they did back in the homeland; The authorities traumatize these poor families with no options of escape, nobody should have to go through this ever and it disappointing.
