some of the main things to check when handling a rifle are;
The Muzzle - always make sure the muzzle isn't pointing at anyone or in a unsafe place, even it is unloaded.
The Bolt - always make sure the bolt is either out of the rifle or in the rifle down with bullets UNDER the bolt.
Bullets - make sure there is no bullet in the spout and are either in the magazine, under the bolt or in a safe place where you cannot loose them.

Passing the rifle - when passing always make sure the rifle is empty and the bolt is down. To make things easier you should put the scope caps and bi pod legs down. Also, check the safety catch is on.

About to shoot - when preparing to take the shot you must make sure you can see through the scope clearly, and you know which target you are aiming for. You should also load the rifle and only take the safety catch off just as your about to fire. Make sure the rifle is sturdy and breathe out when squeezing the trigger for a steadier shot.

When stalking you are responsible to know and understand the laws and best practice when it comes to shooting a deer, crucially you must be able to correctly ID the deer and know when and where to shoot it.
Each shoot you take must be 110% safe, you must make sure you have a solid backstop to make sure the bullet isn't going to carry on and cause any possible damage if you miss or passes though the deer. You must have a clear shot of the deer, you must have an uninterrupted view of the foreground.
The range of the shot must be taken at a range that it will kill the deer humanely. A shot must never be taken if the deer is moving, badly-positioned, in poor visibility, through cover, or when your aim is not steady. You must always check the barrel for obstructions or mud, snow or stones before you take a shot and the safety catch is only taken of just before you pull the trigger.

Make sure the muzzle end isn't pointing towards anyone, should be pointed in the air. You can carry a loaded rifle with the safety on when stalking and could be carried on your back by a sling. Make sure you have permission from the landowner as if you get caught this could be seen as armed trespassing. Never put down a loaded air rifle or leave it unattended.
