MINERALS & ROCKS

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?

• THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF ROCKS
(IGNEOUS, SEDIMENTARY, METAMORPHIC)

✓ IGNEOUS
- The melt originates deep within the Earth near active plate boundaries or hot spots, then rises toward the surface. Igneous rocks are divided into two groups, intrusive or extrusive, depending upon where the molten rock solidifies.

✓ SEDIMENTARY
- Sedimentary rocks are one of three main types of rocks, along with igneous and metamorphic. They are formed on or near the Earth’s surface from the compression of ocean sediments or other processes.

✓ METAMORPHIC
- Metamorphic rocks start as one type of rock and with pressure, heat, and time gradually change into a new type of rock.

• TWO TYPES OF MINERAL

✓ SILICATE MINERAL
Silicate minerals all contain silicon and oxygen the two most abundant elements in the Earth's crust. Silicates are by far the more abundant of the two groups of minerals, comprising some 75 percent of all known minerals and 40 percent of the most common minerals.

✓ NON - SILICATE MINERALS
- Non-silicates are minerals that do not include the silicon oxygen units characteristic of silicates. They may contain oxygen, but not in combination with silicon. Their structure tends to be more variable and less complex than that of the silicates, although they too can be subdivided into different classes based on their composition.

AND DID YOU KNOW THAT?

• ROCKS ARE NATURALLY SOLID AGGREGATES OF ONE OR MORE MINERALS.
• ROCKS CAME FROM THE GREEK WORD "LITHOS" WHICH MEANS STONE.

• MINERALS ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OR ROCKS.
• SCIENTIST DEFINES MINERAL AS A NATURALLY - OCCURRING CHEMICAL COMPOUND, IT IS SOLID IN NATURE AND IT IS ORGANIC
(WITHOUT CARBON ELEMENT).
