The thing that stands out from this chapter is the motif of Jing Mei not being "Chinese" enough and thus making her not worthy enough to tell the story of SuYuan to her half-sisters. Throughout the story, Jing Mei wants to be fully American and rejected her Chinese identity. She fears that the cultural and language barrier between her and the twins. Jing Mei is seen throughout the chapter, as trying to find her inner Chinese identity (discovery of her Chinese heritage) as her real challenge, instead of searching for the twins.

Harini and Alvona

What stands out to us most was the fact that when Jing Mei first saw the two older sisters that she had never met before , they didn’t exactly look like Su Yuan . However when a picture was taken of all three of them together , laughing and wiping each other’s eyes , Jing Mei realized that each of them had their mothers features , but together , they looked like Su Yuan herself .

This chapter shows that both Jing Mei and Su Yuan had unrevealed love . In the previous chapters , Su Yuan never really showed love to Jing Mei like how a normal person would. She showed it in an “Asian” way , which meant that instead of showing her affection with hugs and kisses , she advised and used sarcasm to teach Jing Mei about harsh reality. Likewise, Jing Mei never really appreciated her mother for who she was . However in the last chapter, Jing Mei realizes her love for Su Yuan as she tried to fulfil her mother's last wish of meeting up with her long-lost daughter . There is a saying that goes like this “ You don’t know what losing something means until you’ve lost it” .

“ And now i also see what part of me is Chinese . It’s so obvious. It is my family. It is in our blood. After all these years , it can finally be let go “ This shows that all these years she felt like she never did belong because she lived in America as a Chinese . She felt more American than Chinese . In the last chapter, she then realized that what made her who she was was her love for her family, the long generations of her family .

The tropes of guilt and regret in this chapter stands out. Jing Mei’s father feels guilty about Suyuan’s death,he blames himself for putting “a terrible thought in her [Suyuan] head” by being unaware of his wife’s intentions to go to China. Suyuan’s guilt can also be seen in this passage, she feels immensely guilty for abandoning her baby daughters and felt like she was “saved for no good reason” (felt selfish) even though she really tried her very best to hold on to her babies, she ultimately made the right choice to abandon them (better for their sake). In the end, Suyuan dies with regret without resolving her choice (whether the choice she made was truly better for the twins). Jing-Mei is guilty for not knowing her mother well enough (to tell her sisters about her,she feared she’d disappoint them like how she disappointed her Mother) and for not understanding the Chinese culture well enough as can be seen in her plentiful questions regarding her Mother and the Chinese culture (even trivial qs such as “what was that pork stuff”). Thankfully, most of the guilt is absolved in the final chapter. ”A Pair of Tickets” acts as a gateway for Jing mei and her father to resolve their guilt. Jing Mei also fufills Suyuan’s regret and wish in the last stanza. “After all this years,it can finally be let go”(Sy’s guilt and wish and part JM’s hope to fulfill her mother’s wish) - By Shu Zhen

This chapter reveals Jing Mei Woo's suppressed feelings and her gradual understanding of Su Yuan finally reaching a peak. Jmw is finally told about the full story of SY abandoning her two children on the journey to safety, and this story revealed how the mother sacrificed her children so they could be cared for in proper hands, knowing fully that she was unable to. Until she died, SY never lost hope and believed that her children were alive and that she was determined to find them. learning this story, jmw is finally able to accept that the basis of her identity, her half-heritage as a Chinese. She finally understands her mother's regrets and feelings so far. This is especially evident during the scene where the father explains the meaning of her name. JMW's name ultimately reveals SY's hopes for her. The word "Jing" means the pure essence, the good leftover after taking the impurities out. She is one of the few good things left in SY's life after SY went through so much pain. SY pins her expectations of something better on JMW because ultimately, JMW is genuinely everything good she has. This reveals how SY has always thought of JMW. She has always thought of JMW as her remaining treasure, something that has remained from her struggles throughout her entire life. SY is finally able to understand this. - Michelle

Jingmei used to be rebellious towards her mother and is resentful of her Chinese heritage and culture. She tends to wish for western ideals of freedom and desires to carve her own individual identity. This could be seen in how she initially rejected Su Yuan's gift of the jade pendant, which represents the family's heirloom and only begrudgingly accepted the gift after. However in this chapter, she found a sense of belonging towards her family members in China, whom she had never seen before until then. However, she now has a language and cultural barrier between them

The thing that stood out while reading “A Pair of Tickets” was when JMW initially pictured her sisters as babies, just like when her Mother had left them. After knowing about their whereabouts, she then pictured them to be 6 year old kids, being oblivious to their actual age. This is probably due to the guilt she has because SY left them all alone, vulnerable and incapable of doing anything, just like little kids; and JMW subconsciously cannot let go of this guilt. This correlate to the last part of “A Pair of Tickets” when she finally sees her sisters in real life, grown up and all. Tan uses an imagery of the development of a Polaroid to symbolise this. The gray-green surface of the Polaroid, being dull, represents what JMW felt before JMW meets her sisters - the guilt, the gloominess and anxiety that she had. The Polaroid then develops and starts to form a sharp and clear picture, which represents the realisation of reality; the realisation that they share the invisible bond through Su Yuan's love.
- Aung Htet Myat

What stands out in this chapter is the act of Jing Mei truly discovering her mother's true story, only after she had passed away. This leaves Jing Mei with a sense of regret as she did not probe Suyuan about this when she was alive as she already had a negative mindset about her mother's abandonment of her daughters in China. Before this chapter, Jing-Mei tried to find out what her mother meant by "activating het genes and becoming chinese". This could be the act of returning back to her roots in China and embracing her true chinese family who lived in China. Jing Mei unkowingly helps her mother relieve this wish by visiting China and discovering her heritage.

What stands out in this chapter is SY’s sacrifices. Sy was willing to give up sentimental value for the life of her children, and she was willing to lose her family heirloom. She puts herself before her children, which is very motherly of her to do, but what sets her apart is that she goes to the extent of leaving her children so that both parties could live. “Take my babies, I beg you” shows her desperation for the betterment and survival of her babies. She remains hopeful but “to lose so much and to find nothing”, she will never accept the fact if her children die. “her eyes shining back. “Do you see my foolish hope”” Her genuine belief that her children is alive, she thinks it is foolish, “hope or clothes?” Starting to question herself.
