This is a photo of a culturally diverse, middle school chorus. In the book "Dreamkeepers" by Gloria Ladson-Billing, she writes about Winfield's cross-classification system. One of the behavior patterns discussed the role of "conductors" in a child's education. "Conductors" believe that students are capable of excellence and they assume responsibility for ensuring that their students achieve that excellence. This photo represents the idea that under the teachings of a conductor, students of all cultural backgrounds can work together.

This is a photo taken from the movie "Remember the Titans." Gloria Ladson-Billings also writes about Winfield's idea of "coaches." In regards to the behavior of teachers, "coaches" also believe that their students are capable of excellence, but they share the responsibility of helping them achieve it with parents, community members, and the students themselves. I believe that this photo from "Remember the Titans" is a great representation of "coaches." In the movie, there was tension between the African American students and the white students. After playing on a team together for a coach that didn't want them to see each other for their skin color, they became family with an incredible bond.

I found this photo exceptionally interesting because it shows all of the African American students sitting in front of the classroom and the white students sitting in the back of the classroom. This photo relates to a few of the topics that Gloria Ladson-Billings writes about. One of the topics is the idea that desegregated schools are re-segregating themselves. Whether the African American students are separated by seating arrangement or entire classroom, both the white and the African American students are being treated unequally.

Ladson-Billings discusses the fact that African American parents wanted their children in schools with white students. African American parents felt that the schools with the white students had better facilities and resources compared to the private schools for African American students. Ladson-Billings also emphasizes that the community plays a critical role in the academic excellence of it's children. This photo shows the community members, made up of mostly parents, advocating for the education of it's children. The community fought for integrated schools so it's children could not only have better resources, but also to end the cycle of inequality.

Culturally Relevant Teaching

When Georgia students are in eighth grade, they are required to learn about the history of Georgia, which includes some of the culture of African Americans and the history of Slavery. Gloria Ladson-Billings believes that teaching African American students about the history of their race and culture is vital to their desire to learn. Ladson-Billing writes "Specifically, culturally relevant teaching is a pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural references to impact knowledge, skills, and attitudes" (Ladson-Billings, p. 20). I also agree that culturally relevant teaching is a powerful pedagogy that is foundational for students of all races and cultures. Teaching students who are white about the history of the African American culture is just as important as teaching African American students about their own culture.
