Learning and practicing netiquette is extremely important for children, especially since technology is so widely used nowadays. With the rise of social media and online schooling, children spend a large portion of their day on the internet. Children start using the internet at a very young age, and just as you must learn cell phone etiquette, such as turning your phone off in a movie theater, you must learn internet etiquette in order to stay safe and be kind.
https://pumpic.com/security/netiquette-rules-for-kids/

Netiquette for 6th Graders: Think Before You Post

By Kayla Capucilli

With the rise of technology and social media, children and teens spend a large amount of time on the internet. This lesson plan focuses on teaching students to think before they post in order to ensure they are kind, respectful, and appropriate when posting online.

Lesson:

Part 1: I will open the lesson by asking my students if anyone knows what etiquette means. After hearing various responses, I will ask if anyone has heard of or knows what netiquette is. If no one knows, I will ask if anyone has any guesses as to what it is. This discussion is meant to see how much my students know as well as to get them to start considering the idea of netiquette.

Part 2: After our opening discussion, I will present a PowerPoint that will explain what netiquette is and why it is important. The PowerPoint will also focus on important rules and examples of netiquette, with an emphasis on the idea of thinking before you post. We will discuss the importance of being kind and respectful online, treating others the way you'd like to be treated, and reviewing what you write before you post for content, tone, and grammatical errors (is it True, is it Honest, is it Inspiring, is it Necessary, is it Kind?). This activity is meant to inform students on netiquette.

Part 3: After the PowerPoint, I will show my students a video exhibiting lack of netiquette online in emails, chat rooms, and social media. Students will then talk about the video with a partner or in groups and make a list of the proper and improper netiquette they witnessed. After students are done making their lists, we will come back together to discuss what each group noticed. This activity is meant to see what the students have learned from the PowerPoint and if the students can spot proper and improper netiquette themselves.

Part 4: Next students will write a journal entry addressing the following questions:
1) What have you learned about netiquette?
2) Have you ever experienced someone with bad netiquette while using social media? How did it make you feel?
3) What can you do to make the internet a better place?

Part 5: I will put students in groups where they will work together to create posters showing off netiquette rules and examples. They can create a poster using online tools (such as Google Docs, PowerPoint, Canvas, etc) or by hand using a poster board and coloring materials. After they create these posters, they will present them to the class, and then we will hang the posters up either around our classroom or the school (if we have permission to do so). Students may choose to make digital posters, in which case they are encouraged to post these posters on social media and spread the word on the importance of netiquette.

Netiquette for 2nd Graders: Respecting the Privacy of Yourself and Others

I will begin my lesson by asking my second grade students if they know what etiquette means.

2. After defining etiquette, I will ask them what they think netiquette means. Then I will write the definition of netiquette on the board and students can copy it into their notebooks.

3. I will proceed by asking the students to help me create a list on the board of different parts/examples of netiquette (examples of possible answers: using respectful tones, reviewing what you write, respecting privacy, etc).

4. I will tell my students that today we will be focusing on the privacy section of netiquette. Then, I will break my students up into groups and hand them cards with do's and don'ts of keeping themselves and others safe on the internet. I will ask them to split up the cards into two piles: do's (will respect privacy on the internet) and don'ts (will not respect privacy on the internet).

5. Once each group has completed their piles, we will join together as a class to go over which cards belong in which category.

Before this project I had never heard of the term netiquette. Now that I have completed the assignment I can not believe I did not know this term three weeks ago. I have learned how important netiquette is to know about. Especially in recent years with the rise of technology. When I was growing up technology was only used occasionally in the classroom, while now it is used basically every day. Specifically during this pandemic while students are attending school virtually. Students are aware of the proper etiquette needed during in person learning but now more than ever it is important for them to learn netiquette for virtual learning. Students need to understand that their teachers and peers deserve the same respect in a virtual classroom as they receive in an in person classroom. Even when returning to in person learning, technology is still a main teaching tool used in the classroom. It is necessary for students to obtain the proper skills to ensure respect and safety on the internet.

Prior to this research I did not consider how important it is to teach children proper netiquette. Technology grew as my generation grew. Therefore, when it became super popular I was old enough to understand how to properly handle myself on the internet. When I was in high school we had the occasional assembly on cyberbullying, although that was all the school had taught us about proper behavior on the internet. However, in today's society children are exposed to the internet by the time they are in kindergarten. Being that young they are not yet able to discover proper netiquette on their own. Cyberbullying and stealing others information on the internet has become far too normal. It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of these young children on the internet.
With that realization in mind, my research has strengthened my belief that all aspects of netiquette need to be taught in schools and reinforced each year for children to keep building on their netiquette skills.

Before this class I had never even heard of netiquette, which is crazy to me considering I've grown up with technology. By age 10 I was already on Facebook, and kids nowadays start social media younger and younger. I think the biggest takeaway from this project is that children should be taught about netiquette in school, especially since technology is so widely used in schools these days. When I was in elementary school the smart board and the few clunky computers in the back of the room were the extent of our technology, but now I've noticed that many classrooms have Chromebook carts or iPads for students to use. The rise of technology in schools, including this unprecedented time of online schooling due to the pandemic, shows me just how important it is to teach children how to be safe and respectful on the internet.
Prior to doing this research, I hadn't considered that children really need to be taught about netiquette. We were never really taught about netiquette in school, and while I feel like most of the rules of netiquette were common sense to me, such as treating others the way you'd like to be treated, being kind and respectful, maintaining your privacy, and reviewing what you write before you post, not everyone is aware of these rules. For me, what my parents' taught me about face-to-face etiquette carried over when I started using the internet, but unfortunately not everyone makes that connection. It's easy to hide behind a screen; I think we've all seen questionable content or rude comments posted online, and I think every child has witnessed cyberbullying at one point in their life. With the rise of technology and social media it is more important than ever to teach children about netiquette. I think I've always thought that it's important to teach children how to behave online, as cyberbullying is a global problem and the internet can be a harmful place if not used correctly, but I never knew that there was a word for the rules one should follow when posting online.
My research has definitely strengthened my belief that children should learn how to keep themselves and others safe before accessing the internet, and I definitely want to make sure my students are aware of netiquette when they start using technology.
