The passe compose always uses an auxiliary verb, (usually being "avoir") but has 17 verbs that use the helping verb "etre".

Equation of passe compose w/ etre:

Subject+ conjugated form of etre+ past participle

*Note*

The ending of the past participle, must agree with the gender a quantity of the subject.

Formation of the Imparfait⤵

Take the nous form of a verb, from example passons (passer), and drop the"ons".
Use an imparfait ending that agrees with the subject.

Conjugations:

Je - (nous form w/out "ons") ais

Tu - (nous form w/out "ons") ais

Il/Elle/On - (nous form w/out "ons") ait

Nous - (nous form w/out "ons") ions

Vous - (nous form w/out "ons") iez

Ils/ Elles - (nous form w/out "ons") aient

*Note* être is the only irregular one. The root would just be "êt" and then, you add the subject agreeing imparfait ending, for example: Nous etions.

Deciphering whether a sentence needs the "passe compose", or "imparfait", can be tricky. Luckily, there are specific words that trigger the passe compose, meaning that if these words are used, the sentence must be passe compose.

Passe compose and Imparfait in the same sentence⤵

When telling a story, the Imparfait is used to set the scene. The Passe Compose interrupts the Impafait, and moves the story along.

For example: Il etait une fois, et il etait une fille qui s'appellait Aurore. Elle etait une princesse. Un jour, elle a s'est piqué le doigt, et elle est tombee.

Another way to use the two in a sentence, is to use the Imparfait to describe progressive actions, then use "quand" to interupt it, and continue with what happened.

For example: Il regardait la tele quand son ami a telephone.
