It was known that religion was a big part of many people's lives, so the use of rationalizing and justifying slavery using words from the bible is just a way to get more people to support this idea of racism and have an opinion shift, making them believe that racism is ok. There is also this quote in the beginning of the book about how assimilationists are often selfish people find things to be a part of with other people to make yourselves feel better (page 11).
