I love the digital upload system with HOSA much better than Tallo. Students found it easier to use as well. I'm glad there's a place to submit beforehand so we know if we qualified.

I love the new system to upload entries, and I like the way that more events are using it - it really streamlines the judging and events during conference. The CMS is much easier than TALLO was, and I can see if the student has uploaded or not.

Our chapter is very unique and special - because the kids are very unique and special 😊 As are all of the students in all of our programs and chapters. They all have an interest in healthcare and are working through challenging curriculum toward their goals. Some of these kids work jobs, some do sports or other student organizations, some have less than ideal home lives, . . . Yet they show up and give us what we ask for, every day, to the best of their ability. So yes, they are pretty special and unique.

I haven't used the new system yet, but I am glad that it has been updated. We used Tallo in 2022-2023 and my student had a difficult time making sure everything was uploaded the way it was supposed to be, so I'm excited to try the new system.

I enjoyed learning about the new system for digital uploads. I have not worked with any of the upload systems myself as I just expected the students to do it themselves. And given that I have not worked as a judge, I don't really know how any of this works on that end... is it easier for the judges?

Our chapter began two years ago because two students wanted a chapter and were willing to do all the start up work. They asked me to be their advisor. Our school does not have any on campus courses that support HOSA related fields; just our basic biology, chemistry and physics type courses. So, to have kids willing to learn about health careers completely independently from any course work, I am quite proud of them.

Medical Photography – I was the door manager, last minute as someone didn’t show, for this event at our most recent SLC. The student competitors had to come check in with me prior to their competition. I would then usher them into the room and introduce them to the judges before leaving them to complete their event. I saw first hand the nerves, the seriousness & the dedication these students brought. It was a thrill for me to have an inside glimpse of what goes on in the competitive portion of this conference.

Biomedical Technology – I am not ashamed to say I’m not exactly sure what biotechnology really is (lol!), but I do know a SD student by the name of Mazzi Moore placed 2^nd in the nation in this event (ILC 2024)! Woot! Woot!

Clinical Nursing– HUGE respect for this field in general. A faculty member from USD came and helped teach/mentor during our “Mini Camp” held a month prior to our SLC. These camps are designed to help prepare students for their competitive event. 3 hours of small group practice with a licensed RN paid off BIG for one young lady. Julianna Uphoff placed 2^nd in the competition at the State Leadership Conference and earned her spot to compete at ILC!

Digital Upload System

Several events require digital uploads. Uploads such as portfolios, personal statements, persuasive writing papers and resumes can be made through this system. The HOSA Digital Upload System integrates with the existing HOSA Conference Management System (CMS) so the uploads will be very user-friendly for members as well as advisors. Week two of this course offered a thorough overview of the system and how to use it.

Uniquely SD HOSA…

The South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC) hosted an anti-vaping hashtag and video challenge with South Dakota Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Chapters. Chapters sent in submissions of videos they created with the message to discourage vaping and raise awareness of its detrimental effect on one’s health. Several SD HOSA chapters sent in entries all which can be viewed on the SD Foundation for Medical Care website. I’ve included the link below as well as the link to a clever submission:

our chapter is very unique as it’s the only collegiate chapter in the state. We just completed our second academic year in spring 2024. Our students competed in year one but chose not to this year. As a chapter they have decided to focus more on giving back to the high school students during our annual conference. They hope to participate by presenting a hands activity in 2025. We will spend most meetings working on this and doing some community service work with the city of Vermillion or the university campus.

I really struggled this year with registering my students and ensuring that all was set for them at competitions. I will absolutely be using the tools I learned by going through the experience all the way to the ILC and all of these helpful pieces in the Silver Class. Tallo will help make things so much easier.

I know a lot of us are in the same boat, but I am especially proud of my students for jumping in and working hard to move from one competition to the next in our first year. So excited we had four qualify for ILC. Only three could make it to the event but my students worked hard.

We are the only all-girls school that I know of in the metro St. Louis area to participate in HOSA. I will say that other girls-schools have asked questions and are planning to form their own chapters. There is at least one private school already participating but it is nice to lead the way amongst the girls-schools in the metro area.

Health Career Display - this is the only one I have personally come familiar with as we had two groups compete, and they both chose to do this. Love how you can be creative and make it your own! And I'm all about speech/public speaking, so a very well rounded, fun event!

Health Career Photography - saw this as an option during SLC, and it looks like a lot of fun, and again being able to express creativity!

Call me crazy, but I personally love tests. At SLC, I helped proctor the online testing room. I appreciate all the options our students have with these!

I have not had to upload anything yet to the digital upload system, but I feel confident I and my students will be able to easily accomplish this when we need to with the wonderful videos and guides HOSA has to reference. I did not work in TALLO at all so cannot compare the two, but I appreciate that the HOSA digital upload system is straight-forward and does not seem complicated. I also like that advisors can check in and make sure students uploaded :P

Our chapter is special because we are so diverse! We have such different backgrounds for a smaller community, and can bring lots of perspectives to the table. We also have a wide range of health related fields our students are interested in, so we have learned a lot about different careers as we explore them. Here are a few of us at WI SLC!

Our chapter is not allowed to go to the ILC and SLC, so we have an intra-chapter hosted by the school and by the faculty as judges. The students like to do it and it's a way to still recognize our own students since they do not get to compete.

We are not familiar with using Tallo, however, it is something that we plan to do this year, especially for my seniors. I think it is a great way for students to be more visible and it helps them stand out for colleges or scholarships that they may not know about.

I do not want to be negative, but I spent last year emailing and calling our state rep. and never got replies. However, after reading some of the posts here I'm going to make it a point to reach out to other advisors to see if we can create joint activities, which could lead us to being a part of something on the state level.

I like that we no longer use Tallo for digital uploads and have transitioned to the HOSA Upload System. I really like that I can go in and see what the students have uploaded to make sure they have submitted what is required for their competitive event.

At the 2024 ILC, we received our first time winner, Benjamin Carver- 2nd Place in Speaking Skills. Our chapter is so proud of him. He also placed 1st at Regionals and State so to make it to ILC and place is phenomenal!

I think the HOSA leadership conference for officers was very helpful to students to learn more about their roles.

HOSA also had a pharmacology day at the UAMS pharmacy school . The students got to listen to pharmacy students explain how they are navigating through a challenging education and discussed all of the different hundreds of jobs in pharmacology that even I was not aware of.

I like that fact that the members of my HOSA chapter actually form a bond that they carry throughout high school and beyond. They are a really strong group and they are welcoming to any newcomers. They are also enthusiastic about HOSA and committed to the program's success.

We don't use Tallo anymore, so this question should be reviewed. For digital uploads, I don't think I will have learned much until actually attempting to upload something. And so far all I know is "some competitions require it". I do not know much about it.

Something Special the State Does

To be frank, I feel so incredibly disconnected from the State HOSA group, I don't know what they do special. I can say that they have a competition at the beginning of the year to design the theme for the year, but that is always done before my students even have time to have their first real activities planned, and none of my students are creative types that have wanted to do it. It's nice that the theme is student-designed... but that is about the last communication I get before "Oh, it's time to meet for conference!"

My favorite Event is Nursing of course. I have 23 years in the nursing field and it is still the love of my life as a career. I am teaching because of a back injury and I do love my students and teaching but I miss nursing.

I have not tried the new system as of yet. IT does seem to be a lot better. The last time my chapter tried we had to use TALLO and it was tricky. I have recently just steered students away from the skills requiring TALLO because I struggle with digital activities. I feel like this one will be a lot easier and want to try it this year.

All my students are so special. We are learning so much and I am so proud of thge way they become a " team" when practicing these competitive events. I see students who do not participate in sports and are quiet and seem sad just blossom in HOSA with comradery and friends.
