"The disease had sharpened my senses --not destroyed --not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad?"

"The old man's hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once --once only. In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him. I then smiled gaily, to find the deed so far done. But, for many minutes, the heart beat on with a muffled sound. This, however, did not vex me; it would not be heard through the wall. At length it ceased. The old man was dead. I removed the bed and examined the corpse. Yes, he was stone, stone dead. I placed my hand upon the heart and held it there many minutes. There was no pulsation. He was stone dead. His eve would trouble me no more."

These quotes build suspense because he mentions going to hell, and how he killed the old man and repeated the fact the old man was "stone dead".

Edgar Allan Poe was famous for his descriptions of horror in his books. Many of his stories include the use of an unreliable narrator, and one who is insane and/or murderous. This is a trend common in most of his stories. He has the narrator in 'The Tell-Tale Heart' murder the old man--insisting he is not crazy. In 'The Cask of Amontillado' the main character murders his friend Fortunato, by leading him to a chamber, saying happily that after he locked his friend in a chamber his entire life. In summary, he commonly uses insane or unreliable narrator in his stories.
