Meeting the needs of newly arrived migrant students by Teacher Academy

What do you feel are the main needs of your students? Where do they and you require support in addressing their needs? Is it dealing with trauma? Or is it about language support? Do you also have experiences where students have very basic needs such as those outlined by Amber? And how do you meet those? Share your ideas and views here.

I've never had refugees in my classrooms. However, I think it's essential to let them feel accepted and integrated. That's why there should be projects aimed at supporting them with the language and integration in the hosting country. The psychological support is even more essential as first of all they need to face their trauma, that might condition their life for ever.

However, ee help all students in need, Greek or foreigners. I agree that basic needs have to be satisfied first along with psychological support. In my school and area we have no such chances. For the time being we only need language support, integrating classes for the greek language only since these kids can easily attend other classes and activities such as gymnastics, art etc. Nevertheless, there is need for organised integrating classes for those kids who have many new things to face and wounds to heal.

I had some experience with newly arrived immigrants when I was a Primary School teacher. I had pupils coming here from India for example, speaking no Italian and knowing nothing about our country. The first step towards integration was providing them a basic language course and involving them in group activities in which they could show their skills to their peers and get to know them informally, even without knowing Italian (let's say, games and sports, music, drawing). This way, they started to feel part of the group and started to learn the basics of communication even without actually studying them. They usually felt welcomed by their peers and this surely has contributed to their integration.

I am sure that we will have to deal with students with different schooling backgrounds, lack of basic life skills, or even lack of basic necessities, and most importantly students that have experienced trauma.
It^s not a secret for every experienced teacher that education is a providing activity of teenagers and the success in this field plays a vital role. That^s why we should do all the best to create comfortable conditions for studying. If we have a newly arrived student in the classroom, we are manages to organise some kinds of warming up activities to help him or her to join the community. It can be made throught mini-projects. the atmosphere will be positive and only through activities and common work student can get along with each other. If the newly arrived student doesn`t have enoug knowledge, the taks of the teacher is to help him to overcome these difficulties. It`s a wise way to create a contact with the students.

In my opinion at first it is essential for these students to feel safe, and respected. The environment should help them behave and feel like children once again. Following that, it might be helpful to emphasize in skills that would help them in their everyday life, such as learning the language of the welcoming country. Of course psychological support is necessary, since most of these children have inevitably faced traumatic experiences.

I teach English as a Foreign Language at a Technical Secondary School in the South of Italy. There aren’t newly arrived migrants in my classes but some students of foreign origins. They are second generation migrants because children of immigrants, so they are already integrated in their classrooms. However, in the past I experienced the coming of newly arrived migrants in a classroom and I noticed two basic needs. The first are related to language support and the second to be in a foreign place. There wasn’t a cultural mediator in the school, so I decided to use English to address their linguistic needs as they can speak English quite well.
It was more difficult to meet their basic needs because fleeing their home country was a situation often related to the experience of losing loved-ones. All the school community tried to make those students feeling at home.

Besides I am every day in the Accommodation Site where these children live, so I have the opportunity to observe them in their environment. I believe that it won't be easy for the beginning, but we will find a way to meet the educational and emotional needs of these children. Of course very important is to create a supporting network with everybody who could be involved in this.

Things are realy different between countries. I've been working with foreign (and also migrant) students for many years, but I've never seen anything like what Amber reports. I believe that, in these cases, school will have to work in partnership with the social assistance. However, I have had a few cases where the pupils' school skills were very different from those needed to attend school and didn´t know, for example, how to answer multiple choice questions, even if the language was not the problem. According to my experience, the main barrier is language, a factor that is even more difficult when there is no language of communication or an interpreter between the teacher and the student. That is why the language teacher plays such an important role, since it can be the fundamental element for the integration of students in school.

For the moment there are 4 refugees in my school and they are split by pairs and put in different classrooms as listeners. They don’t actually participate, because they don’t know the language, they don’t have books (apart from the standard textbooks which are in Greek), etc. These students should all be together in a different class, with a different structure and timetable, designed specifically for their needs and focusing firstly in the learning of the language. Unfortunately, in my country the school system is not yet as organized and in such a degree, in order to cover the needs of all these students. There is an effort being made to that direction, but it’s very low-scale for the moment.

They are often fleeing from wars and problems so they need clothes, food and a suitable accommodation. The above association with lots of good and smiling volunteers take them to shelters where can stay and slowly begin a new life. Mostly of the migrants are very young and they saw lots of ugly things in their countries. So they need to forget them and to think that it's possible have a happy future with the help of sincere friends and people who have really understood their stories, respect their cultures and want to know them. This association takes care of their elementary needs but also of their health because in here there are specialised doctors who can afford whatever problem they can have. In the end, the volunteers are interested in contacting schools to enroll students, support them and encourage their attitudes and likes.

I believe that the main need of these people is to feel safe and for feeling safe they have to learn how to cope with every day life, practically first and then academically. Of cource language is basic key of communication in our civilazation so it's important to give them the chance to learn it. I don't have migrants but I have Roma and their common is that they meiss basic skills of everyday life. We meet their needs since they are comming systematically at school and giving them the chance to feel good with all others being part of our school community.

The main need of the majority of the refugees students is to learn as quickly as possible the language of the country they settle in. I had a refugee student in the first class of a primary school although he was 14 years old. He could hardly understand greek at the beggining but he had a strong will to learn. So I prepared a fast learning program for the greek language and in a period of three months he attended the third grade.

One of the main problems the migrant students in my classes have, is that of language, but they also need to be integrated more in the real life outside schools. Teachers and educators take steps in order to help newcomers, but then the integrating process must be continued also in other life contexts.

Although I do not at present have newly-arrived students in class I remember many years ago, when the first Albanian families were coming to Greece and their children starting school. It was more or less similar but not the same. I just tried to make them feel safe and accepted.
Having in mind Maslow's hierarchy of needs we need to cater first for the students' Physiological needs : hunger, clothes etc. The counter argument goes: this is not my jod - Yes, but see what the teacher in the first video does. Good for her and for us - to be inspired. Then the safety needs: make them feel protected from danger and meet their Belongingness and Love needs: affiliate with others, be accepted in the school community. I believ this is what the Australian teacher at STARTTS programme does. Then, enable them to feel they can achieve things to gain approval and recognition, meet the esteem needs. And then we deal with their cognitive dvelopment and move up the pyramid. On Maslow's hyerarchy on Needs:
https://www.learning-theories.com/maslows-hierarchy-of-needs.html

Different migrant students all come with their diverse baggage and needs. For sure their sense of uprootedness and sense of loss should be addressed. Some of the students, who had to come to Malta with their parents are teenagers, and they are quite unhappy and angry that they had to leave their life to come here. Therefore they offer a lot of resistance to learn Maltese and English as they do not wish to have anything to do with their host country. Such students might need some form of therapy to come to terms with their particular loss. Students who have suffered trauma because of war and difficult journeys need a different sort of therapy. Then there are the language(s) barriers. In Malta they have to learn two languages - Maltese and English - as they are bothe used for teaching. Then they, together with their parents, also need to be integrated into the system. There might be various differences in the schooling routine such as lessons and duration of lessons, break etc.; how the school day is organised, what is expected of the parents and of the children, e.g. they need to bring lunch, they must do their homework etc. Teachers on the other hand must be trained to address such a diverse class with diverse needs. They should have training in pedagogy, methodology and sociology. Having the skills to meet the needs of migrant students would be an asset for the whole class.

It is amazing how important it is for them to feel accepted, to tell stories whenever it "suits" about their nation and the war or customs they have. They face difficulties in modern greek language lacking vocabulary of secondary level, but they are totally amazing in ancient greek declinations!they are very willing and quick in learning!

As I wrote in the first and second course, here in Central Italy we have faced multiple waves of Romanian and Albanian migrants. We had to deal with cultural and communication problems. The kids came to school. They learned the language and the culture. We did a good job and now we have the first generation of ex-migrants and well integrated students in universities. Actually we are facing a new and huge wave of Nigerian migrants. Mainly young males from 16 to 30 years old. Some of them are minors without parents. We're doing what we can in emergency conditions. They're not attending regular studies. They're not in our schools. I investigated this matter in my second LD. I interviewed some of them. I'm still checking this point but: they say they're not allowed to access the city center. You can see them walking in the suburbs or standing in front of supermarkets. In Rome there is a program of service learning: Italian students teach our language to Nigerian migrants. That's all. But, sooner or later, NAM students will attend the ordinary school. I taught in a economically depressed area for a few years. I can extrapolate from that experience. We are teachers and we tend to face every problem with academic solutions and in academic terms. But: this is reality and we have to verify personal condition of newly arrived migrant students first. The presence of psychological or behavioral symptoms. Clothes, personal hygiene, general conditions. And shoes. You can learn a lot from the shoes. And eyes. If you look into the eyes you can understand a lot.You have to build up a communication strategy. A translator like Goggle's is a basic but effective tool. There are non linguistic but powerful communication instruments. Drawing and playing football together seems a good idea to build up a first perception of a safe environment. Nigerian migrants speak a fluent English. No communication problem in this specific case. They are amazed by the fact that in Italy people don't speak English. They say:”In Nigeria only the poorest peasants don't speak English. Why nobody understands me here?”. You have to build up communication channels with local authorities. Here in Italy we maintain an active solidarity network. It would not be a problem for me to call the local authorities directly and personally. We have in our schools special needs students. Therefore, there is a psychological aid service. You need to know the places and the conditions in which NAM students live. After you've understood and verified the material conditions, you have to deal with the academic issues. It would be foolish to pretend that a NAM student will read Dante or Leopardi. But we've discussed this topic in first course. If you are interested in my poor opinions (and honestly I don't understand you), you can refer to my first LD.

I totally believe that the primary need of a newly arrived migrant student is to feel safe and accepted by the community. As mentioned in the video, many of the children are suffering from trauma. So, teachers should deal with migrants' feelings to help them overcame the anxiety and the depression. Feeling safe and part of a community will boost children's self-esteem and motivate them to learn the language. Consequently, they will be more capable of succeeding in the academic field as well. Undeniably, teachers should be supported by the government and organizations which deal with migrants' problems.

I think that their basic needs must be appropriate nutrition and health care, as well as to feel safe and accepted. Of course, some of them may have traumatic experiences and need special psychological support. In some cases, students and teachers require support for addressing their needs. Another aspect that should be dealt carefully is the migrant students' language support, since their new country's official language will be their primary mean of communication.

I have found so many different needs in migrant students as different people they are. However, we may say that all of them are specific needs because of their situation. Difficulties with Spanish language have not always been a significant barrier. Cultural factors and overall familiar factors have usually worked as important obstacles in their social integration. I have found parents and families feeling not at ease when they see that their children are loosing their cultural habits, for example. Then they do things that can be considered as obstacles for their childrens' socialization. It is a problem that teachers and schools have to face but of course it is not easy at all.

The main needs of my students are: being accepted and be part of a community which has a real interest in knowing their background and helping them grow up. Their past experiences are important for them and they want to talk about them. once I had an experience which helped me understand how newly migrant students feel. We had drama class and the teacher asked these students to recite a poem they learnt in their country. WE stayed in circle and listened to them. It was Manjola's turn (she is from Albania and had a very sad story). She told us she wanted to recite a poem she wrote in her Language. It seemed like a prayer and even if we couldn't understand the meaning of this poem we felt how intense and true was the sad story she was telling us. She cried and continued reciting the poem. My life changed suddenly. I understood : Manjola needed to feel at ease as her life had been so difficult that even the departure from Albania didn't help her find her way and feel part of a community. We became friends and even now we phoned each other and she tells me about her life, her success and failure. When she understood that there were people who cared, then she became a very good student and tried to do her best.

They're in a new country, so learning Italian will allow them to become really part of the new society in order to satisfy other basic needs such as: build new relationships, move through the big amount of laws and regulations that are essential to have medical and legal assistance and share they're experience as migrants in a world that has forgotten the meaning of leaving home countries.
The second main problem I face is the lack of economical resources that are essential in daily surviving. For example most of the refugees need clothes (shoes, slips, socks...), dishes and food, that often is provided by charity.
There are organizations and associations, as the one I serve in as a volunteer, that act in order to address the entire range of needs. For example my associations has experienced and qualified staff that offer Italian free classes, free cultural mediation service and clothes and food distribution.
We also organize intercultural activities (such as creative recycle, knitting and sewing labs) that are open both to Italians and foreigners so they really know each other and build strong and true relationships.

I think the main needs of foreign students are learning the language and therefore the understanding of subjects studied. I have no experience of students with basic needs or trauma. I think that foreign students should follow the Italian upgrading courses. And that should be placed in classes where you study a language that is foreign for them, but who have studied in school. Wax to communicate the whole class in a foreign language makes everyone feel equal.

Most of my students' basic needs are met at the places where they live. However, parents often come to school for support and some needs for clothes , food or advice are met by volunteer associations out of school, volunteer teachers and the parents' association. At school we mainly deal with language support and we try to create a welcoming and safe environment where they feel safe and accepted.

Nevertheless I think school can make the difference if its efforts are coordinated and it can rely on the support of the shelters or families young refugees live within. One of my pupils is a teenager who spent most of his life in a refugee camp before arriving in Italy. He was not used to sitting at a desk or to organizing his school supplies. He used to leave his classroom whenever he was upset. Things have slightly improved, but it is very difficult to make steps forward when families, as in this case, are not helpful. I think the experiences above were successful only because everybody was pursuing the same goal.

They do not know how to get hospital or how to communicate with embassy for paper issues, how to use closets, how to use money and how to get exchange etc. I think before schooling we as teachers should support and help about their daily life needs. The one of the main problem is communication. Most of the parents cannot communicate well like their children and they use their kids as translator. One of my students took his mom to doctor and he told about his moms' pain and problems to doctor. Then he translated to his mom. By the way, he was only 7. When doctor got the results and told him, he got shocked. Because doctor said your mom has a cancer.

Well, my school is a part of a small community that we all know each other so, until now we had never experienced how it is to be with migrant students and that there was no need to form any integration plan. Since we have welcomed our first migrant student last month, we are thinking and discussing how we can make him feel comfortable. It is about a boy 14 years old from Aigypt who can scarcely unerstand French and he can't speak English at all (not to say about Greek!). He doesn't dealing with a trauma nor has he these basic needs that Amber outlined, but of course he needs help. So the most important thing is we, the teachers first of all, to form and discuss with each other an agenda of specific accepted and not accepted behaviours about him in the classroom. The important thing at this point is to be stand together to make the school a safe place for him and help ourselves and the other students to communicate with him properly.

I haven't taught newly arrived migrant students yet, but I consider covering basic needs(home, food, clothes) a priority. Giving them back the hope of living by making them feel secure and valued is the next big step. School, community and individuals should help them stop 'fighting with their fears' or using 'breathing technics' to control anxiety. All supportive partners should help them familiarise themselves with the new culture without forgeting their own.

I had a number of very different migrant students over the years, not all of them newly arrived. I especially remembered one who had many of the characteristics described in the first video: his schooling experience in his own country had been very poor, and his life conditions very basic; he expressed himself in a very physical way, jumping and climbing everywhere. But he was so happy to be at school that it was difficult to convince him to go back home when lessons were over, on the first days he just sat ooutside, waiting for the school doors to open for him again. I don't think we were very successful in helping him develop all his potential, but at least he found a place where he felt safe, and where he liked to come back everyday.

Each student has his story and his necessities. For me, an hard challenge are students that haven’t gone to school in their original countries, because they arrive into Italian lower secondary school, but they don't know how to use a pencil or a pen and they can’t read and they lack of school skills.

In my classroom there is a Romanian girl arrived in Italy eight months ago. She is thirteen years old, she speaks Italian quite well for ordinary communications and she is learning new words every day, but she attended only the first year at the primary school when she was six years old, then she didn’t attend any school till September 2016. Obviously she reads and writes like a six years old child, she is not used to engage herself in school activities and to sustain school effort.

This is a hard challenge for me and I need to rethink my teaching practice, because my student can’t do anything without teacher support, but I have to teach to 23 students (Italian students and migrant students arrived in Italy many years ago) and I can’t be near her all the time. I need to teach her not only school subjects, but also school skills and skills for life.

I think that a cooperation network is really important to sustain newly arrived students and I hope to create it with colleagues and students’ parents and local organizations.

First of all these students need to be better.
A good work with the emotional intelligence is more important than a work about teaching.

But last year I have 3 refugee students and their main needs were clothing, cleaning, food and language. They didn't know our language so at the beginning they had some problems with others.

When we, teachers, think of the newly arrived migrants, usually worry because they don't know the vehicular language in the class, but this handicap is not as important as others. The lack of awareness of the traditions and norms in the new country can be a serious problem for the integration in the new society. But above all, the so horrible experiences they have lived until they have arrived in the new country, everything they have seen and lost in their way and in many cases the lack of a "home" (and I don't mean a "house" but a "home") can evoque negative feelings and psychological disorders.

So, in many cases, they need more psychological support and emotional stability rather than the acquisition of contents. Thus, it is a difficult matter to solve since they don't know our language and in many cases, we don't know the language they speak, so it is quite difficult the communication between us and transmitting good vibes. Moreover, few teachers are developed academically in order to deal with the psychological problems that they suffer from. And even more, sometimes they don't have their basic needs, so it is impossible that they care learning our subjects.

I am sure that if we, teachers and native students, make the effort to integrate them in our classes, their difficult process of adaptation to the new class and society will be easier, but not simple

I think they do not want our pity, but want to be understood, accepted and loved to be integrated in the new context. It is important the cooperation between teachers and parents of students and collaboration with the local organization.

The main need of migrant students at my school is to learn the Italian language better. They usually know some Italian but for some of them it’s not enough to be able to understand lessons where specific vocabulary and language structures are required. They have some specific Italian lessons in small groups of migrant students while their classmates have other subjects that would be too difficult for them because of the language. Sometimes they also need psychological support due to family problems derived from the difficulties the parents have to find a proper job or due to living conditions that are not up to their expectations. In this case we can meet their needs because we have a psychologist at school. We don’t have experiences of students with very basic needs such as those outlined by Amber.

Many kids are not used to going to school, they do not speak Italian, and they are immediately placed in a foreign environment from all points of view. Access to emotional help.
I had had experience of students not being able to access basic needs and need training on many things we take for grants.
I work for a charity organisation that aims at helping newly arrived migrants in the UK. This organisation is part of a local network helping to provide the migrants with basic necessities (food, clothes, personal hygiene items, etc.) as well as healthcare. The network is useful in terms of helping the migrants to find and access necessary services. We arrange for free English language classes in a community setting for those adult migrants who cannot access college. But mainly we aim at creating an environment where the migrants would feel safe and welcome to come and make friends, engage in various activities ranging from board games to few week long courses, join us on visits to local places, etc. We try to help them adjust to the way of life in their new community. This often includes explaining and showing how the systems work in this country (starting from getting a bus ticket to making a hospital appointment or applying for a job), what the social norms and expectations are (e.g. what behaviour is expected in a school or a workplace), how culture and traditions affect day-to-day life (e.g. what festivals people have in the UK and the way those are celebrated). I could go on and on, but the main message here is that the needs of newly arrived migrants are not limited by learning the language and getting a house to live.
