Many have been driven away from their lands by famine and pollution, mainly caused by the severe environmental impacts of climate change bought upon by thriving industries— making them “refugees” (14) of their land, seeking greener pastures. Families experience such circumstances in Afghanistan, where different environmental disasters further complicate their dire situations of survival. However, the diction that Ping uses in this line is not entirely negative, particularly with the word “rise.” (14). This diction creates an uplifting tone, contrary to most of the line. The word itself brings about the connotation of those who have fallen already but still rise again, thus pertaining to the sheer willpower, perseverance, and resourcefulness that can stem from those whose limits are pushed, such as “refugees” (14). Such is the case in a war-torn village in Laos, where its inhabitants have found a way to turn their detriment into their salvation. They “recycled old war junk,” such as bombs, “into practical objects,” even building using said artifacts of war to build a “fence” around their village. This reflects the “rising from” that Ping writes in this line because although devastated by war, the inhabitants of this village can take that devastation and create something out of it, making their situation just a little better through resourcefulness and perseverance. This can be related to the introduction and use of lithium-ion or Li-ion batteries worldwide - while lithium-ion batteries have helped revolutionize technology and allow for major advances in consumer products everywhere, it should be noted that they are controversial when it comes to their impact on the environment. These batteries require substantial mining for precious metals such as cobalt and lithium, and as a result, negatively affect the environment through mining and being less viable for recycling. Resourcefulness is one of the most desirable traits that humans possess, and the creation of new metal-free and recyclable poly-peptide batteries reflects this trait very well. Being able to create batteries that minimize dependence on metals and are genuinely viable for recycling is something that can be related to the so-called "rising" that is presented in line 14 of the poem because, in a way, we are rising from the ashes of the lithium-ion battery that can negatively affect the environment with the creation of batteries that minimize their environmental footprint.
