Among these are Winston's diary, Big Brother, sexual repression, the proles, technology, the dark-haired girl, O'Brien, Doublespeak, the ministries, Two Minutes Hate.

Two Minutes Hate is a two minute period where everyone in Oceania must stop and watch a video that displays the Party's enemies and everything that they've done wrong. I thought this was an important symbol because it's everything that the world George Orwell has created is based upon. They aren't allowed to love, divorce is encouraged, and hate is one of the only emotions that the people are allowed to feel and express. They have hate rallies too. The Two Minutes Hate is done daily to remind people who they should aim to not be like. It's also a way to scare people into not going against the party. This way they can see how they'll be treated, after death.

One of the most important symbols in 1984 is the use of Big Brother. Big Brother represents total power in government, he is kinda like a dictator. This is important to the plot because it controls what the people in Ocenica can do and what is forebidden. He shows what life might be like if we aren't careful about who we elect as our president.

In the book 1984, there is a large symbol known as Big Brother. He is the embodiment of corrupt government and dictatorship. Throughout the story we are able to see how B.B. has taken away all sorts of freedoms from the people in Oceania and has brainwashed them. He is a reoccurring symbol in this story that reminds the reader of the corrupt society and depressed life of the people in 1984. From the first page of the book we can see that Big Brother is always watching them and that they have no individual freedoms.

I think the most important symbol of the people in Oceania losing their freedom is Doublespeak. On page 55 it states "Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller". This sentence is a symbol of how each year the people of Oceania are losing more and more of their freedom physically and their freedom of speech due to Doublespeak. It is important because Doublespeak also displays how Oceania is limiting their people's mind sets so that Big Brother can control them completely.

The Two Minutes of Hate is a ritual that happens in the world of 1984 every single day. It is a period of two minutes where the citizens gather together and watch videos and pictures on a large screen. Everything on the screen is designed to make them mad, and are mostly pictures of their enemies and the people they hate. This symbolizes how controlling the government is. Even if you don't hate something, if the government makes you watch the same thing every day and everyone else hates it, you will most likely follow along. The government did this so that they could make sure that every citizen was on the same page of who to dislike.

In the book the ¨big brother¨ controls everything about its people and they citizens of the country. In the book the leader takes away the privacy of the people and slowly brain washes them. It shows that the people could not get any privacy and they were always living in fear because the ¨big brother¨ is always watching.

He is the visual aspect of the government and how it is a corrupted dictatorship. Throughout out the book we learn in many different ways how Big Brother has put many restrains on the people of Oceania and has taken their rights. Big Brother always seems to be a recurring problem and symbol with in 1984.

Winston's diary is an important symbol in the book. Winston's diary seems like a small, insignificant act against Big Brother. The diary is really meant to symbolize Winston's want for freedom and his hate for the government. The diary also lets Winston write about his past, which is something that the government always lies about. Winston could be killed for having a diary, and his life would be completely erased. With having a diary, Winston's life and legacy can be remembered.

The diary is like is safe place, it allows Winston to escape from Big Brother and into his own world. Winston's diary allows him to write down what he is thinking, which is against what the party believes and wants you to believe. The party is wanting to control everyone and what they think, the diary allows Winston to escape and be rebellious.

I find this symbol to be most interesting because it is so unlike the world we live in. There nothing like it. Big Brother creates a sense of dictatorship and has full control. He is a big symbol brought up many times in the book so far showing how intense and how abnormal their society is. From reading this far in the book, we can see that Big Brother is very important.

The diary also allows Winston to write about the his memories. The diary is Winston's legacy.

Symbolism is very important because it says something without flat our saying it. Symbols can be universal and understood around the world or could be cultural. Symbols give books meaning and makes something represent other things. The biggest symbol in 1984 in my opinion is big brother. In the book you'll hear things like big brother is watching you and hear all about this guy big brother which may seem confusing but big brother symbolizes the government in this book. Big brother is shown as total control and omniscient government and is seen everywhere in the setting of 1984.
