Day One- Welcome to South Korea!

Today, my family, friends, and I have arrived in South Korea for the first time. My friends and I are really excited when we all walk outside to our taxi’s that a family friend had called a few days prior to our arrival. Since my friends are also here, there were two taxi’s waiting outside for its passengers to board. We decided beforehand that there would be a taxi with one parent with half of my group of friends, and the other parent would supervise the other half along with some adjustments. We put our luggage in the trunk of the cars and went inside. Since it was pretty late in Korea we decided that going to the hotel that we booked would be best for now. When we arrived we unpacked some essentials and made bed arrangements. Since there were only two beds per room, we all decided that we would share beds as well as rooms. My family will share one room, and my friends and I will share another. Even though there are six of us, we decided that two would share a bed, and the other pair would get singular beds to themselves if they felt uncomfortable sharing with others. Before we went to sleep we decided to go eat a little something because airplane food isn’t exactly the best at filling you up. After our meal my friends and I bid my family good night, and we took showers before meeting in one of the rooms to talk about the day. It was getting really late so the conversation ended with a pleasant ‘Good Night.’ And with that, we were out like a light.

Day Two- Attractions

Today we are going to see two of the many attractions in South Korea. The first attraction that we plan to visit today would be the Demilitarized Zone. This attraction allows you to be able to view across the 38th parallel into North Korea. During the time that we were outside after our visit to the Demilitarized Zone, I suggested taking a tour around Seoul, so we won’t be confused to where we are. It would definitely be something that we would always be cautious about for as long as we are visiting in other places that we know nothing about.

The reason for that is because this specific attraction would be better viewed during the evening. We wait until the sun sets, then we set out to the best spot to view the Seoul Skyline.

Today is the day that we go into some restaurants to try Korean food. Most of the restaurants that we saw were Korean barbecues. I did hear that Korea had a lot of places like this. We ordered our food in the restaurant that we were in. When our server came back, I’m pretty sure we all drooled over the food that they presented us. Even though it was raw meat that we had to cook, the different types of additional ingredients that we could have with the meat looked really good. The main thing that was served was beef. We could have as many as the side ingredients as we wanted to add to the beef. The only problem here was cooking the meat. The pieces of meat were really thin and we didn’t trust anyone at the table to do it, so our server did it for us. When I tasted the meat, my mind went blank. I couldn’t decipher how good this was.

I don’t exactly know if we are going together as a group, or if we are going to split up into two groups. The stores were side by side, and they all had their entrances open for anyone who wanted to check out what the store had inside. There were also café’s or restaurants that had the same concept as the stores. But there were some stores with doors and it was a lot calmer than what was happening outside. There was also less people going in and out constantly. Some stores were also part café that sold stuffed animals, and other cute things, while some others sold clothing for both men and women.

But instead of going out to eat, my parents decided it would be better if we used the groceries we bought to make something for lunch, since we already ate this morning, but fell asleep again. While my parents were packing the groceries, my brother was supposed to contact the family friend that lived here in Seoul, telling them that we were going to come over. My friends and I chatted with each other until it was time to go. After arriving at my parents friends house, my friends and I were in charge of unpacking the groceries, while the adults got out the pots and utensils, and my brother just sat down being the type of person he is. The things that we are going to make are bulgogi- barbecued beef, bambap- chestnut rice, stir-fried cucumbers, beef, boricha- barley tea water, and nok du ciru pyun- steamed rice cake with yellow mung beans. It took a long time to make, and my friends and I were probably dead by the time the food was finished, but the food was very good and we enjoyed it maybe too much.

My friends and I wanted to stay in bed until later that day, but no. My parents had different plans, even though I took everyone here. I just remember my friends leaning on each other (specifically me) dozing off, then waking up from sudden jolts and frantically looking around to see where we were. The train only took about two hours to get from Seoul to Busan, which is our first destination. Considering the fact that the city is on the other side of South Korea. Our stops were, first Busan, second Daegu, and third Incheon. We visited those cities in that specific order because it was from farthest to closest, if you were in Seoul. I was actually pretty surprised that my parents had planned all of this yesterday when I told them what was happening the following day.

Today Koreans (and me as well as my friends) listen to Korean Pop. It is spreading quickly around the world and the most popular K-pop group is Big Bang. They are the K-pop Kings out of all of the boy band groups in the music industry. Another K-pop group that is quickly catching up to the fame would be BTS. Bangtan Sonyeondan, Bangtan Boys, or the Bulletproof Boyscouts, have gained quick popularity throughout the years since they have debuted in 2013 with their song 'No More Dream'. The seven member boy band quickly climbed the U.S charts in 2016 with their song, 'Blood Sweat and tears,' from their album WINGS. Later beating their own chart record in the U.S in 2017 with their songs, 'Spring Day' and 'Not Today,' that everybody was anticipating for. Both songs are in their newest released album, WINGS Extension: You Never Walk Alone. Fans of the boy group are bustling with adrenaline to buy tickets to their world tour that they recently left for, in the beginning of 2017 on the 28th of February. The album WINGS has individual songs made based on the personalities and characteristics of each member in the group as well as their back story. The extension album held the songs that the group was not able to put inside of the album until later on because of their tour that they did during the time as well as participating in the Mnet Asian Music Awards. The album before WINGS was Hwangyanghwayeong which means 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life'. This particular album was split into 3 separate mini albums that held some of the most mainstream and popular songs that BTS have made. In total, BTS have made two full albums and ten mini albums. They also have merchandise that have been selling popularly ever since their first concert 'Red Bullet'. 2 Cool 4 Skool, O!RUL8,2?, Skool Luv Affair, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt.1, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt.2, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt.3, Young Forever Pt.1, and Young Forever Pt.2 are the Korean mini albums that they have made. The full albums that BTS have made are Dark and Wild, and WINGS Pt.1&2. BTS have also made two Japanese albums. Wake Up made in 2014 and Youth made in 2016, which are the two remaining albums that make up the ten mini albums that this famous Korean boy band have made. It is truly impressive how far this group have gone together and individually with popularity, fame, and progress within the past now four years. BTS has three rappers, four vocals, and- excluding the oldest and one of the third oldest- the rest are dancers. The main dancers are the youngest, one of the second youngest, and one of the third oldest. From oldest to youngest in BTS will be the following- Kim Seokjin (Jin), Min Yoongi (Suga), Kim Namjoon (RapMonster, leader), Jung Hoseok (J-Hope), Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung (V), and Jeon Jungkook. The oldest to youngest in Big Bang would be- Choi Seunghyun (T.O.P), Dong Yong Bae (Taeyang), Kwon Ji Yong (G-Dragon, leader), Kang Daesung (Daesung), and Lee Seung Hyun (Seungri). Big Bang has five members while BTS has seven. BTS work under BigHit Entertainment and Big Bang work under YG Entertainment.
Another form of entertainment would be Korean Soap Operas. Also known as K-Dramas, they have also gained popularity pretty quickly. The categories that K-Drama would fall in would mainly be romance.
