I have not used exploring stations, but I do centers.  Model and practice is the key. Set up expectations and procedures.

Exploration Stations are great ways to peak student interest, provide hands on opportunities while introducing science concepts and the scientific processes.  Exploration Stations provide opportunities for students to collaborate, learn from each other, share their observations and defend their arguments. 

Practicing routines and procedures, scaffolding and front loading necessary information. 

Exploration Stations are a type of learning center or station, sometimes called a science table that can be used in rotation with other centers. 

1.     What is the value in using Exploration Stations with Phenomenal Science?

·       Exploration stations allow students the opportunity to investigate, explore, and observe.   They provide students with hands on experience with real world materials.   It allows them to discover, create their own knowledge, and revise their thinking.  This goes hand in hand with the inquiry-based learning values in Phenomenal Science.  

2.     What is the best tip you have for setting up Exploration Stations in your classroom?

·       Have a box of exploration materials for each unit.  Things that are engaging and easy to pull from.   Also, keep a list of additional materials that need to be purchased, collected, and found to store in each box.  Task cars or guiding questions cards can also be kept in the boxes to go with each unit. I have found if I am organized I am much more likely to set up engaging exploration stations and add to or change them up throughout the unit.

·       Have a box of tools that can be used in any unit such as magnifying glasses, rulers, scales, yards stick, measuring tapes, measuring cups, balances, mirrors, etc. 

·       Teach students the rule and expectations for using the exploration station and include signs and visuals with rules and directions.
