Well for starters If we take it literally what he is seeing could be to visual and traumatic that his mind is trying to escape this scene with anything that it can think of to block out this horrific event. Instead of taking it literally we can think and see that the italicized text contains being lost and hopeless, and his friend ship with hassan. That do what Amir is thinking about throughout this traumatic experience. He’s thinking about his friend and if he should help and he’s thinking of a time where he felt helpless.
