self-serving

To start, Beowulf exhibits self-serving tendencies . Most would not describe him as a hero because one of the key characteristics of being a hero is to always be willing to help others even tho he did help king Hrothgar and his people he only truly cared for himself. “But Beowulf only longed for fame , leaped back into battle he tossed his sword aside , angry : the steel-edged blade lay where he dropped it… so fame come to the men who mean it and care about nothing else “Lines 503-509 Beowulf only cared for fame and openly admitted that he cared for nothing else. A true hero would not care about fame but what he did to get there.

narcissistic

Another reason that Beowulf is not the ultimate hero is because he is narcissistic. If in fact he was a self proclaimed hero he would not be so egotistical but more outgoing and willing to sacrifice for others. “They have seen my strength for themselves, have watched me rise from the darkness of war, dripping with my enemies blood. I drove five great giants into chains ,chased all of that race from the earth. I swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean , and killing them one by one; death was my errand and the fate they had earned. Beowulf believed that people should respect him because who and what he killed . The fact that he thinks these tings proves that he is not a hero but a bully.

Lastly Beowulf is too Boastful to be a hero. Beowulf boast not only about himself but about his men and his father all throughout the poem from the beginning to the end.”and Beowulf uttered his last boast “i’ve never known fear, as a youth i fought in endless battles. I am old now,nut i will fight again , seek fame still, if the dragon is hiding in his tower dares to face me” He even Boasted as an old man If he was any good at being a hero he would not have to talk about it so much people would already understand and respect him because actions speak louder than words.
