Jazmin's Process Journal: When you think about being graded, what comes up for you? Draw it.

Image Description: On the top left of the drawing, there is a blue moon with clouds. On the top right of the drawing, there is a yellow sun. Beneath the sun and moon are two heads with open mouths. They are both faced towards the center where there is a yellow circle-face with a downturned mouth and baggy eyes. Above the yellow circle-face are red scribble-spirals. On either side of the yellow circle-face are homework assignments with red markings. Then, beneath the center image, is a small stick figure standing behind a gradually increasing graph of blue arrows.

When I think about being graded, I think about stress, anxiety, and pressure. In my drawing, I drew an extremely tired individual who has pulled an all-nighter studying. Even though they put in all their effort, they are still surrounded by exams and assignments that are still "not good enough." The person in the middle is simultaneously dealing with external and internal voices telling you that you need to work harder and your efforts are weak; these voices remind you that your grades equate to your personal value.

Beneath the main image, I drew a tiny version of myself with arrows gradually getting taller. This represents how the standards keep getting higher and sometimes I feel as if I am struggling to meet them. These standards fall in the categories of myself, the academic world, and external pressures that push me to somehow work harder than I already am.

Grades have always been anxiety-inducing for me. I would always strive for an "A" and would find it so painful when receiving a "C." I would like to think that I have pushed myself to the best of my abilities, but sometimes my work turns into insecurities and internal self-criticism. Like the blue arrows display, the standards become more and more unreachable and I feel like a smaller person along the way.

(Transcribed from the original image).

1) In the picture, there is a large crowd of people--men, women, young, and old. At the center of the picture, there's a young child, presumably on their parent's shoulders, with a big happy face and their arms high up in the air.

When I look at this picture, I assume that everyone is in a big city at a busy sidewalk (which would explain why they are all crowded together). When I look at the adults' faces, they look neutral. They don't seem scared, confused, or happy. To them, this is everyday life. The child, though, is incredibly happy. Maybe they are excited to be high in the sky on their parents' shoulders? Maybe they had the best day ever? Maybe they're excited to be in the city? Maybe it's all of it! I noticed that there's a phone with a hand in front of the child, so maybe the baby posed like that because they're taking a selfie.

2) City and Sidewalk Possibility:
* Crowded people.
* People seem un-phased like this is everyday life to them.
* Maybe it's a tourist area?

My ArtZine communicates my passion for theatre. I have been on stage since the age of five and have stayed there ever since. Through theatre, I have grown, learned, and discovered.

Theatre has taught me so much over the years. I have learned the technicalities of theatre while also learning to keep in touch with my emotions and my community. The arts have taught me how vital it is to be empathetic and kind to others. In spite of my experience with theatre, I learn something new everyday! I have specifically learned about the Theatre of the Oppressed and how this form of theatre gives marginalized communities a voice through the usage of creative arts.

My ArtZine displays my love for nature. Growing up in Big Bear, my hometown was surrounded by forestry, mountains, and wildlife. I really took Big Bear's beauty for granted when I was a teenager because all I could think about back then was how to get out of my hometown--leading my hours and hours away to San Francisco. While I love the Bay Area, I find my heart yearning for Big Bear's mountains and skies. It's sometimes hard being so far away from home. I love having independence and a life of my own, but part of me misses my childhood bedroom, my mom's cooking, and the nature that was my backyard.

Even outside of home, nature and wildlife was extremely prevalent to my family's traditions. Every summer, my mama, my papa, my little brother, and my two dogs would travel across America. We would roadtrip, camp, and visit the many National Parks scattered across the nation. I miss struggling to pitch the tent, grilling steaks on the barbecue, and listening to my papa sing and play guitar around the campfire. This is a tradition I have now missed out on as I have grown up, but I miss it every time Summer comes around. When the warm sun rolls in and shines upon my face, I'm reminded that this is yet another moment to appreciate nature and its beauty.

My collage communicates many vital aspects that curate my identity: my family, nature, and my youth.

Jazmin's Reflective Summary & Analysis on Session One of Ethnic Studies (Session 1, July 11)

I learned about the history of ethnic studies in education. My undergraduate journey was done at San Francisco State University, so I was partially aware of the beginnings of the ethnic studies department in the Bay. However, watching the video on the development of the Ethnic Studies department at UC B, I realized how my privilege affected my understandings of the growth of the department. I never took into account the fight and revolution that went into connecting Ethnic Studies into education--building the bridge.

I was also shocked about the push back University of California, Berkeley had towards the Ethnic Studies education movement. I feel that Ethnic Studies is such a vital focus within the study body now as well as being heavily implemented by the educators at the university. To think that UC B was once against the movement--calling in the national guard and tear gassing students--was unsettling.

Something New, Different, and Unexpected/Something I Learned Today with Dr. Sullivan (Session 2, July 13)

This session has been extremely eye-opening. Dr. Sullivan is extremely well-spoken and I feel that I have learned so much from them in just two hours. Because of Dr. Sullivan, I am more well-informed on the term "sun down town," gender violence and aggression, the patriarchal and misogynistic controls over the female body/identity, and the racial and gender hierarchies at play within our identities and this society.

I appreciate Dr. Sullivan emphasizing that it's okay to ask questions and that, despite our own intersectional privileges, we are not the sole individuals that created these unjust hierarchies. By becoming more informed, by being learners and educators, we can work together to fight against these societal injustices.

Thank you, Dr. Sullivan!

In class, my home group and I discussed the question, "How do we begin to make strides towards dismantling the concept of “the model minority” in the academic field and understand that all communities are equally hardworking and deserving?" We inquired how the concept of a "model minority" is deeply rooted in Western nationalism, specifically directed at the Asian American community. While Asian Americans are typically given the label of "the model minority," this polarized thinking disregards the ethnic hierarchies within each community and the struggles all marginalized communities face.

This brought up another question, "How/why does America's "melting pot" disregard the marginalizations of BIPOC+ communities and enmesh these experiences into one big issue rather than individualizing the systematic and social oppression each community faces separately?"

In class, Dr. Sacramento went into depth with our class reading "Towards a Radical Asian American Pedagogy." She further explained the goal of a radical Asian American pedagogy, to reveal and highlight the history and oppressions of the Asian American community, as well as explained the term RAD(ical) and it's importance to the progressive pedagogy that equates to a radical Asian American education.

When in groups, we discussed how integrated schools, such as Chinese, Filipino, Spanish, or French, would possibly create a strong sense of community in these micro-academic climates. (Dr. Sacramento informed our group that there are two Filipino integration schools in the Bay). However, during this discussion, we dissected how some students need to be in these schools for language purposes while other students are simply privileged enough to benefit from the multilingual integration.

My pedagogical commitments are to integrate Ethnic Studies, my students' local communities, and my students' cultural backgrounds into my lesson. Overall, I wish for all aspects of my students' identities to be seen, heard, and valued (i.e. ethnicity, race, sexuality, etc.). I hope to do so by bringing in culturally relevant and modern texts and authors, giving students the freedom to aid with lesson plan development, and ensuring students that their personal lived experiences are valid and valued.

Today we discussed the BPP, otherwise known as the Black Panther Party, the importance of a senior capstone, and welcomed our student guest speaker, Kimberley, into the classroom.

The idea of a senior capstone connects with the reading “Youth activism in the urban community: learning critical civic praxis within community organizations” by Shawn Ginwright and Julio Cammarota. Like the reading, a senior capstone has students venture into youth activism, reflect on our social environments, and connect to our communities. I especially enjoyed Kimberly's senior capstone on the issues within menstruation, such as access to menstruation appliances and proper eduction on the matter, and those who experience menstruation.

I hope to cultivate student critical praxis through the premise of a senior capstone in my future teaching space. As an English teacher, I would encourage students to venture beyond the bounds of English study and connect with the community around them. It's important to inquire students, "What issues do you personally want to dissect? What problems can we solve? How can we be better as a community?" I hope for students to reflect on their own and their communities experiences, so they can take steps forward towards youth activism.
