Throughout Norman and Paul's life they've caught a variety of fish. Each fish represents opportunities in life. Sometimes the fish slips away, just like the chances in life. You have to work hard in order to gain the opportunities. Being patient for the big moments in life just like waiting for the big fish. Their are a variety of different fish like life gives us different chances.
" Seeing the fish that I first thought would be there led me to wondering which way he would be pointing in the river" (Maclean 17).

Throughout the story, Paul and Norman decide to drink a couple times to celebrate the good times. I believe that the beer symbolizes the good rewards in life. In the book they're beer gets stolen on a fishing trip, representing how easily those rewards can get taken away. In life if we succeed we tend to get rewarded or we reward ourselves, but we don't realize how fast it can be taken from us.
"A bottle of beer would sure taste good... we had left the beer for ourselves, and we went down it stiff-legged" (Maclean 64).

On one of Normans fishing trips in the book, he comes across a dead beaver. The dead beaver represents the dark moments, Norman explains in the book that there weren't able to cast any fish due to the deceased creature. In life when people are going through tough situations we tend to isolate ourselves. The dead creature represents the bad moments in life, and the fish jumping around symbolizes the feeling of stress.
"When I saw the dead beaver I knew why the fish were jumping" (Maclean 60).

In the story when Paul and Norman encounter the dead beaver they observe bees surrounding the animal. I believe that the bees represent negative influences we come across. In life we have negative influences all around us whether they're people or bad habits. The bees swarming the animal, are the bad influences surround us. As people we have the choice to take part of it or not.
"The dead beaver had drawn a swarm of bees that were flying low over the ground and water" (Maclean 60).

As the Maclean brothers go to several different sites to fish they experience both good days and bad days. When they go fishing I believe that the fishing rod represents the way we handle experiences. At times in the book they would barely catch anything, and sometimes they would catch several fish. Whether it was positive or negative experiences, the rod is the way we handle those situations just like we handle the rod with those fish.

"After he buttoned his glove, he would hold his rod straight out in front of him, where it trembled at the beating of his heart" (Maclean 2).

In the book they show that Paul is better at fly fishing than his brother. In the story the audience reads about Norman struggling in the beginning and as Paul tries to help him he gets frustrated. The flies represent that skill set, everyone is different and some people are just better at doing other tasks. Each fly is distinct just like every individuals abilities.
"He didn't carry many flies...each fly with which a skillful fisherman can imitate a good many insects and in different stages from larval to winged" (Maclean 60).

Everyone has some sort of pattern in their life, that drives us to our successes or even failures. They mention in the book that Paul found his own rhythm fly fishing just like we continue recognizing the patterns in our lives to succeed.
"It is an art that is performed on a four-count rhythm between ten and two o'clock" (Maclean 4).

In life we have to be patient instead of taking all the small shortcuts in life. In the book Paul doesn't take all the small fish he waits for the bigger ones. Paul was a fisherman himself he dedicated himself to earning that skill by learning and being patient. Fishermen continue on using different techniques to reach their goal of the limit fish count, representing that hard work. Dedication is important to thrive for success, and in the book the Fishermen represents that.

"The fisherman even has a phrase to describe what he does when he studies the patterns of a river, he says "he is reading the water"" (Maclean 63).

The river is the main setting of the entire story. It is the place where brings the Maclean family together. The river symbolizes life, as the river keeps running, life keeps on continuing. The river represents all the memories, experiences, and opportunities in life. As Paul and Norman go fishing to several different rivers they portray their failures and successes. Each river contains different types of fish, just as life gives us different types of opportunities.

"Fishermen also think of the river as having been made with them partly in mind, and they talk of it as if it had been" (Maclan 63)
