They are the research, development and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice.  Over the years DNA evidence has had major advancements. Since the early 1990's, scientists have been able to use DNA samples that would have been considered limited or otherwise compromised to reanalyze old cases resulting in overturned convictions. The NIJ advocates  constantly for new developments and research in DNA testing.

The new law sponsored by delegate Debra Davis and Senator Will Smith makes Maryland the second state in the nation to establish a jailhouse tracking system to prevent fake testimony. House Bill 637 is a step in the right direction of more equitable criminal justice reform.
