These crops where known as cash crops and would help develop the new economy's and colony's. The crops had one major draw back in that they where known for there labor intensity and the danger when harvesting. After Bacon's rebellion the labor pool in the new world was then confined to more slave labor from Africa and helped buster the triangle trade.

Slaves grew in popularity in the Southern colonies such as Virginia and the Massachusetts Bay colonies because of the fertile land that provided as a great host to many plantations and land. Furthermore, land was gifted to colonist who sailed to the New World in search of profit and the creation of plantations in that the more slaves a plantation owner had, the more land they gained. Between the 1600's and the early 1700's the amount of slaves in the New World had been multiplied by over a three fold. It went from around 350,000 to over 1,000,000.

The growth of slaves was lead by economics and geography. Initially slavery was way less expensive than indentured servitude, this was the starting point of obtaining slaves. Also, geographically to push economics there needed to be a growth in tobacco and crops, these slaves attained to that and helped the economy succeed.

The beginning of slavery began as indentured servants. Indentured servants worked for a person for a given amount of time while receiving pay and their freedom after the conclusion of their time. This idea of having others work for you developed into the enslavement of Native Americas. Due to the fact that Native Americans were dying because of European disease, colonists had to find a new source of labor. This lead to in transfer of Africans into the New World. As slavery progressed so did the racial views of the colonists. White colonists began to view African Americas as lesser people. This in conclusion leads to the growth of slavery in the South.
