Is it typical Southern Gothic? This is a dark novel that unexplainably doesn't leave a reader feeling bleak. Strange. Overwhelming.
I liked it, I think. I had thoughts of Flannery O'Connor and William Faulkner and Harper Lee stories throughout the entire read.

I read an electronic pdf of this novel of unnamed setting and characters - a parable applicable to any/all; it is a story that left me thinking for sure- about the human condition and bias, instinct, spirit, hopelessness, hopefulness, and so much more. I am wondering: might it be true that no matter the circumstances, there will always be the best of humankind present...and there will always be the worst? Always? Everywhere? *The style is a bit challenging - does not contain traditional punctuation - long complexly-written sentences and paragraphs - certainly a challenge.

This is my 3rd or 4th Kristin Hannah book, and although I did like this story, I enjoyed the others better. I truly loved the Southern humor in this book, and I could certainly identify with the nonchalant sister relationship - sometimes tacky, comical, and ultimately  one of sacrificial love. As I was reading the novel, I kept thinking that it was a bit Hallmark-movie-like (although I do enjoy those some). This book. I give it a 10/10 yet cannot recommend it. National Book Award Finalist. It is likely the darkest story I've ever read. I don't have the words to even begin to describe the book - definitely psychological realism. My only whimper: I'm so sorry, Jude. I'm so sorry.
