When society changes, tourism changes, like booking holidays are now done mostly online. After covid-19 people have changed and due to this new trends have emerged and existing trends have accelerated. Sustainability, is about looking after the environment and that has been a priority for travel and tourism organisations for some time now. Because there has been an increase in sustainability companies have. According to booking.com 56% of UK travellers turn the air conditioning off at accommodations when they aren't there, up 33% from 2022. British Airways have stopped using plastic items such as drinks stirrers, packaging, water bottles and retail bags. They replaced them with environmentally friendly alternatives such as bamboo, paper and recycled plastic. Virgin are using recycled blankets during their service to long-haul destinations reducing the amount of single-use products.

The cost of living crisis refers to a period of time which the cost of everyday essentials e.g. bills and food increases more than average. In October 2022, prices of consumer goods and services rose by 9.6% which was the fastest rate in four decades. Many things such as food, bills and so much more have increased in prices. holiday companies have to put their prices up because the cost of fuel has risen. If the cost of living is increasing, there is less 'disposable income' for people to spend on luxuries. Disposable income is any money that someone has left after paying any bills or taxes. As a result of leaving the European Union the pound is weaker meaning that people get less for their money. Also, because of covid-19, there was supply chain issues that caused prices to rise and the war led to the increase in oil prices and disrupted other exports including food, metals and gas.

Grey tourism is a niche market which targets the older travellers. because healthcare has gotten better that means that older people are living for longer and they feel healthier so they can go away on more holidays. They also have more disposable income and more free time making them an important customer for travel and tourism organisations and because they don have kids they aren't restricted on when they can go on holiday meaning that they can go when its not as busy and when its cheaper. Some people feels that this type of customer market is important and only focus on holidays for these types of customers. SAGA holidays is an example.

A millennial is anyone that is born from the mid 90s to the early 2000s. Millennials use social media more then most other people meaning that they don't normally go to travel agents to book their holidays and they usually book online as it is more convenient and quicker. Therefore, this customer type has changed the way that we book leisure arrangements. Additionally, this customer type is staying at home for longer and therefore have more disposable income to spend on leisure activities.

Solo travellers are people that travel alone. Solo travelling is becoming increasingly more popular. Around 18% of global bookings are solo travellers, solo travel has increased by 7% in just the last year alone. Even cruise operators have had to adjust their offerings to cater for a higher number of passengers traveling alone. Norwegian cruises adapted to this trend by launching studio rooms especially designed for single travellers.

Over the coming years, the UK cruise market is expected to grow at a faster pace then the hotel overseas holiday market. The amount of people who have taken a cruise in the last year hasn't grown but they haven't declined either. However, the cruise industry has an amazing repeat market where more than half (53%) of the people who have taken a cruise in the last 12 months are planning on taking another one in the next year. ABTA Travel Trends 2023 has published that the main reason why people are choosing to go on a cruise again is due to the range of destinations they can visit (60%) closely followed by the convenience of having food, accommodation and entertainment all in one place. The younger generation shows the highest level of interest in taking a sea cruise. The most popular types of cruises are ocean cruises. However, there was an increase in people opting for a no-fly cruise due to new itineraries from the UK. In 2023 there was a pattern emerging that people wanted to go on longer and more immersive itineraries (like Alaska and Norwegian). On a cruise there are thing for everyone so if you are with other people they will all be catered for.

83% of customers book their travel arrangements online using websites and apps making finding holiday arrangements easier. Wi-Fi is available on aircrafts for some companies but at an additional cost for most airlines but it's allowing people to stay in touch whilst travelling. This is ideal for business travellers. Many companies such as British always offer a small fee for the Wi-Fi but companies like emirates and Turkish offer free Wi-Fi. you can check-in online up to 24 hours before the flight. Additionally, some airports like Birmingham airport have self check-ins, making it easier for people to check in at the airport. For some destinations people can drop their luggage off the evening before the flight using the 'twilight service' and check in using their device. Birmingham airport have launched their new security hall, they have invested in new technology including new scanners which means that eventually people will be able to go through security and not take items out of their bags meaning a quicker clearance through security so the travellers can enjoy their holiday and spend more money at the airport.
