What is one value, lesson, or practice from your home, family, or community that has shaped your understanding of the world? How might this impact your teaching or the ways in which you interact with students or research participants?

The struggles and positionality that I have endured has helped me to be a better educator and have empathy for my students. I was usually the only brown kid in class, fluffy kid in class, and many other things that made me stand out. But this is why I seek to include marginalized students even more. My experience as a Latinx, Mexican and Puerto Rican growing up in Michigan really impacted how I saw my self and how I saw my self in education. My "why" for education is to help students to love learning again. I do believe that every kid loved learning at its most early and natural stages... but our education system has bled that love. I hope to bring some of the love back. I seek to include the minoritized and marginalized students, and help to celebrate their home cultures.

One value that I have learned growing up, as an Asian-American, is taking responsibility for my actions regardless of the outcome or consequences. I was raised not to lie, to try to choose the best options, and think further ahead. As a teacher now, I can see how this is clearly reflected in my own practices; when it comes to my students' outcomes, I take responsibility for it. I also use this idea when I teach my students. I remind them how it's never rewarding to lie and I help them think about their choices and consequences as restorative practice.

"There is no such thing as can't" is a quote I heard thousands of times from my father. It made me believe in myself and others; that there was no thing that I, and therefore everyone, could not do.

Growing up as an only child, I learned a lot through self determination. I was lucky that my parents have the resources to provide me with anything that I would like to try to learn (I tried and give up learning piano 5 times). I think what this experience has taught me that it is okay to explore and try new things. This shaped my world because I am more willing to try new things and more open for anything that comes my way.

- Fiona

What is one value, lesson or practice from our home, family, or community that shaped your understanding of the world? Not everything needs to be fun all the time. There is a place for hard work, for relaxation, for celebration, and for rest. Sometimes life is boring, sometimes life is fun. How might this impact the ways in which you interact with students or research participants? I would say it shapes my view in that when students say this or that is boring, or too hard, I often want to say, toughen up! Not everything can be exciting and entertaining. Sometimes you just have to push through. It makes me come off as uncaring, but I am approaching it with the lens of how I was raised.
