Duchess to Antonio: "I look young for your sake". "Your sake" is apparently highlighting gratitude towards Antonio for keeping stress off the Duchess. But also is insinuating that the youthful look is used to appeal to Antonio, this is followed by Antonio "rising" which could infer Antonio trying to escape the romantic tension building between him and the Duchess.

This could be seen to be a proclamation that his love of the Duchess has made him blind. Alternatively however it could be seen that literally Antonio has in fact just not realised that the Duchess is hinting towards her and Antonio being together. It could foreshadow that Antonio being blinded could lead to dangers as it was dangerous I
Look at the Duchess; previous comment too - are they having witty banter already?

'To thy known secrecy I have given up more than my life, my fame'
This quote shows her trust towards Cariola. This noun foreshadows what happens in future events and links Jankowski...
' oversexed widow and play directly into Ferdinand's hands'
This secrecy leads to the Duchess being tortured by referring to the quote 'Ferdinand's hands'. The reference to her 'fame' shows her reputation which she forgets around Cariola. However even though she had 'fame' she still has to hide certain events from her brothers which leads to her downfall at the end of the play.
A like Blanche in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' she hides her true identity from Stanley and Stella to make herself come across as the high class woman she always was, even though at the time of the plays setting many of the middle class families fell into working class as they couldn't afford to live. This then causes the downfall of Blanche at the end of the play.

A key example of the Duchess' social status over men of the time. This is demeaning for the men of the time and is likely one of many reasons for her fall from grace. It is also symbolic of the marriage proposal but with the Duchess adopting the of role of the man (at least in her time period) which shows Antonio submitting to her of his own free will without second guessing the imperative, showing the extent to which the Duchess has control over male gender in the play.

'Yet, should they know it, time will easily Scatter the tempest' Jade + Sydney

This quote said by the Duchess shows how the Duchess isn't fully concerned about her brothers opinion on the marriage with someone not in the same social status as herself; however she knows as the Duchess she has control and can do as she wishes. 'Should they know it' presents how she is wanting to hide the marriage from them and how she fears their opinions although she is in power. The word 'tempest' is defined as a violent windy storm, which foreshadows the violence that takes place towards the Duchess and Antonio when Ferdinand and Cardinal discover what is really going on.
Blanche held the same opinion about Stella marrying Stanley as he was a 'Polack' and didn't suit into the class system that she knew. Blanche believes she has control over Stanley as he is in a lower class compared to her, which also leads to her downfall and could be a reason behind the fate she has fallen into.

This quote is interesting in the fact that the Duchess is trying to get Antonio to see her as an equal. The use of 'only' is evidence of this as it implies that she wants to be seen as nothing more in his eyes and to eliminate the status between them that holds Antonio back. It can also be noted that 'young widow' almost gives the Duchess a vulnerability as 'young' insinuates the need to be looked after, and in some way could show how even though the Duchess holds high power, there is subtle hints that she still needs a male figure in her life. This could then link to streetcar as both Blanche and Stella rely on men. Example being Blanche relies on men for protection and Stella for love.

Zoe-"you have parted with it now" is said by Antonio when the duchess gives him her ring. This quote implies that she is almost declaring her love to him and he is accepting it. Her ring could be seen as a symbol of her love and romantic desires. The word 'parted' is used to imply that her love has been given to him, which foreshadows them becoming married further on in the play.
