The phase when an infant learns to trust others, specifically a caregiver, to make sure their needs are met. The child may also learn mistrust when its needs are not met. I learned to trust my mother because she was the parent who stayed home and took care of me making sure I was cleaned and fed while my father was always away for work, this is supported in the textbook by the quote "When caregivers can be depended on, an infant learns trust—that others are dependable" (p.402)

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

The child starts learning to do some things on their own like going to the bathroom, washing hands, or eating. If pushed too far too fast the child will learn shame and begin to doubt their abilities to do anything on their own. I resolved this phase of my life with autonomy as my parents used tools like a training toilet and small steps to the sink so I could wash my own hands, this mirrors some positive guidelines in the book "When parents and other caregivers encourage self-sufficient behavior, toddlers develop autonomy" (p.402)

In this phase the child seeks independence and starts wanting to do things like playing games or making art. If not supported during this phase the child will feel guilty for not behaving correctly. The textbook specifically mentions that "children may instead develop guilt about acting improperly" (p.402) I relate to this because my parents were older and often times scoffed at my playing or would tease me for acting silly, so I resolved this phase with guilt because I was not encouraged.

In this phase kids learn that they can gain recognition through achievements and begin to take pride in them, growing in ability and mastery. Kids may also fail and have feelings of inferiority because they lack the mastery shown by their peers.
My life in this stage was a mixed bag as I was handicapped for a few years but I like to believe that I solved it with industry as I excelled at reading and several skills that we learned in the boy scouts, which parallels the textbook definition "they demonstrate industry, a pattern of working hard, gaining mastery of cultural tools, and persisting at complicated tasks" (p.402)

Identity vs. Role Confusion

This phase sees teens trying to sort out who they are and how they fit into the world, they will start trying hobbies, forming political opinions, and finding new peer groups. Most teens are expected to find their identity in this phase. I did not manage to find my identity in this phase as it took me well into my early 20's to resolve this, in the textbook it says the teen "may experiment with actions and attitudes" (p.402) and I certainly did, I dived into politics and traveled both alone and with friends and family. Ultimately I ended with role confusion that would not be concluded until young adulthood.

The newly christened adult complete with their discovered identity now faces the phase in their life where they can choose intimacy with another person, where they must make personal sacrifice to share their life with another and develop this mutual bond. When there is a lack of intimacy there may be feelings of isolation in the young adults life.
I have had intimacy in this phase, but for the sake of my goals have forsaken it as to not sacrifice my aspirations. In the textbook it is said "When people do not form these connections a sense of isolation may result" (p.403) and it is correct as I often feel very lonely, but I keep my head up and think of the people I have yet to meet!

Generativity vs. Stagnation

In this phase, the main concern for the adult is whether or not they are making a positive difference. If the adult feels they are of use in society and are making a difference then they gain a sense of generativity or productivity. If they fail to feel as though they are making a positive difference then they will feel a sense of stagnation. I feel as though my current path is a head start of sorts on the path of generativity because I want to help build and influence the minds of the next generation, I hope to solve it with generativity by doing as Erikson suggests "the primary developmental tasks are contributing to society and guiding future generations" (p.403)

Ego Integrity vs. Despair

In this phase the adult looks back on life and all they have done, if all was well and they did most everything they wanted to and left a good mark on the world then they will have feelings of content and integrity in how they lived. If they look back and feel they wasted life and didn't accomplish anything then they will have feelings of despair and regret. Always it has been my goal to live a life without regret, making sure to stick to what I feel is most important in life and making choices that I can feel good about. Erikson states "they may develop a sense of despair if they look back on a life of disappointments and unachieved goals" (p.403) so it is still and will always be my goal to live a life without regret
