In his simile, comparing himself to a horse, it draws some emotion out, thinking that he thinks of himself as less than human, the way his masters did. This draws out a lot of emotion with his comparison to a horse. This would cause a type of pity and sympathy for Douglass and the rest of the slaves.

Douglass uses this example to show the irony of what the white men think is an example of their happiness, where they are actually singing in sorrow about their hard lives. In using this ironic example, he draws attention to how their masters thought and it brings you to think again about the slave songs.

During Douglass' narrative, he uses his own experience as a slave in order to show his credibility. Who better to write about slavery than a slave themselves? This narrative is so unique for its time, being published before the abolition of slavery. His experience as a slave himself must have drawn a lot of attention to this piece about slavery since it wasn't common that slaves knew how to read or write.
