On your timetable, the room information will start with two letters and these tell you which building to go to.

Hawthorn Building will start with HB.

The number(s) before the decimal point/dot tell you which floor to go to:

00 means basement level or lower ground floor

0 means ground floor

1 means first floor

2 means second floor

and so on.

If you're not careful, you can easily mistake a basement level room with a ground floor room.

Generally speaking, the room numbers are sequential which means that room 0.01 is next to (or near to) 0.02

In Hawthorn Building, we have lecture theatres numbered 00.05, 0.05 and 1.05.

If you're not careful, you can easily mistake room 00.05 for 0.05 if you are not on the correct floor of the building.

This one is opposite the coffee shop in Hugh Aston building.

Note that there are stairs leading up to the door.

This entrance will bring you onto the ground floor (floor 0).

This entrance will bring you into the basement level/lower ground floor (floor 00).

Hawthorn Building is a big square and most rooms in the basement level (floor 00) can be accessed through the brown doors on the left or right of this image.

Going through the glass doors straight ahead will lead you to some difficult to find rooms...

This is open during term time and they can help direct you if you're lost.

Circled on the right hand side of the image is the door for computer room HB00.37F.

This room number seems a little strange but there used to also be rooms called HB00.37A, HB00.37B etc. These are no longer in use as teaching spaces and we are just left with HB00.37F in this part of the building.

However, HB0.45 is a very large lecture theatre that has two entrances on the ground floor. The most prominent of these is not next to HB0.46, although the other entrance is next to HB0.46.

There is a "secret entrance" to HB0.46 which is between HB0.10 and HB0.08.

Note that HB0.09 does not exist.

You will see the letter M as part of the room number.

1M means halfway between the ground floor and the first floor.

2M means halfway between the first floor and the second floor.

Unfortunately, they have very similar names!

The room in this image is HB00.43, which is a larger room with just over 30 computers.

Note that you access these rooms via the corridors around the outer part of the building.

HB00.43a will not appear on your timetable but it's worthwhile noting because there are a few computers in there that you are free to use in your own time.

HB00.43c is a much smaller computer room than the others, having just 12 computers.

All computer rooms for our Faculty need you to hold your student ID card to the reader near the handle in order to gain entry.

Note that one of the staircases is not on the same side of the building as an entrance.

Note that this staircase does not give you access to the 3rd floor.

You can also see the most prominent entrance to HB0.45. This entrance is not next door to HB0.46.

Richmond Staircase is on the side of the building where there is no entrance.

Note that this staircase does go up to the 3rd floor, but it brings you to the back of the microbiology laboratory and you cannot access the other laboratory from here.

Newarke Staircase is the one to use to get up to either the microbiology or compounding laboratories on the 3rd floor.

This staircase is near the larger of the two lifts in the building. This lift can also be used to access the laboratories on the 3rd floor.
