When Vlad III and Radu were both young, they were traded to the Ottoman Empire as collateral and held as captives for years. In 1447, Mircea was blinded and buried alive; Vlad II Dracul was killed as well by political rivals. In other words, Vlad III's life was full of sorrow, death, and pain from a young age.
