The character that I chose from A Raisin in the Sun, was Lena (Mama) Younger. She is a older, African-American widow who is living in an apartment with her son, Walter, his wife, Ruth, his sister, Beneatha, and their son, Travis, where they are not welcomed by the white neighbors. Even though she often just stays at home or cleans other people's houses, she still has dreams for both her and her family. She makes sure her son, and other members of the family are well taken care of before herself. Even if the family doesn't make that much money, even if their neighbors are trying there hardest to get them out of their house, Mama still makes the best for everyone.

A character trait that represents Mama would be Generational Differences because Mama grew up in a different time era than Walter and Ruth. So the things she gets upset over or the different things she cares about are usually different rather than Walter or Ruth's. A quote that would represent this trait would be “Something eating you up like a crazy man. Something more than me not giving you this money. The past few years I been watching it happen to you. You get all nervous acting and kind of wild in the eyes—“ p. 72. This quote shows how Mama is genuinely confused and concerned as to why Walter cares so much about the money coming from his deceased father. She is wondering why he cares so much about money that isn't just for him, she understands he has a dream but when she grew up she valued the money she was given or the money that she earned but Walter didn't necessarily earn that money.

Most of the time I do sympathize with Mama because she deeply cares about everyone in the family, and she tries to make everyone happy while at the same time trying to keep herself happy, by doing things like dreaming for a garden. Mama's strengths as a person are that she always puts everyone before her, but most of the time Walter takes it the wrong way and ends up starting a whole big argument because he only wants the money and his dreams. Mama's weaknesses are that she doesn't know how to confront her own family in the correct way, she does things out of impulse for the goodness of her family so that she can sustain them, but lacks confrontation. n example would be when she bought the house without confronting anyone about it, one day she just came home saying they were moving. Walter ended up getting mad because he wanted that money for himself, when he was thinking he was doing something for everyone. But also, Mama speaks her mind, and almost always to Ruth or Beneatha.

This piece of art represents Mama because she is always loving no matter what, no matter what anyone in her family does, she will always love them and do whatever she can to keep them happy. This picture represents Mama because it shows a mother loving her child, which is exactly what Mama does.

This poem relates to Mama because she is always hard working, she has basically become the "lifeline" of the family and at the time she is helping sustain the family because she is sharing the fathers money throughout each person. She has taken control of her own life as well as Walter's, Ruth's and Beneatha's. Mama has gone through a lot within her own life and i'm sure that has sharpen her up to become the person she is now. She has become a brave woman, even if she is just a frail little old woman who cares for her family.

This lyric related to Mama because throughout her life i'm sure she has gone through different experiences than Walter or Ruth would, and especially different experiences than Travis, and no matter how many times people tried to bring her down or tried holding her back from things she wanted to do, she still pushed through and is still the happy old woman she shows to be. She has gone through both the good and bad experiences and no matter what if she was in the dark feeling like she had no help and that she had no on else, she is still thriving and living a life the best she can make it.

The theme of A Raisin in the Sun would be to value and favor the purpose of dreams. A quote that represents this theme would be “Sometimes its like I can see the future stretched out in front of me—just plain as day. The future, Mama. Hanging over there at the edge of my days. Just waiting for me—a big, looming blank space—full of nothing. Just waiting for me. But it don’t have to be.” P. 73,74. This quote represents the theme of favoring and valuing the purpose of dreams because when Walter said this he clearly feels as if there is nothing he will ever pertain to. Nothing he will ever become. He says that he feels as if he will be opening and closing car doors for a white man everyday. He says that the future is waiting for him and he is showing that he does want to become something more than what he is now, he says it's a blank space, and typically something could end up completely changing his outlook on life and his future.

A theme that represents the movie Fences would be to come within the realization of who you are and who you are meant to become. This theme represents Fences because Troy grew up with a bad family situation and ended up having to leave his family at a very young age, but on the other hand, his son, Cory, has a dead set dream to become a football player, he dreams of becoming the best there is. But all Troy ever does is try to put him down, to make him seem like less of a person than he actually is, because that's all Troy ever was told by his own father. But each time Troy tries to put Cory down, Cory almost always stands up for himself to show him that he knows who he is made to become and who he is as a person.

Fences and A Raisin in the Sun are very similar because they have to deal with the same epidemic, which is the struggle with money, the struggle with family relations, and the struggle of sustaining themselves along with others. All the characters are similar, especially the marriage between Walter and Ruth and Troy and Rose. Both plays were set before all Black Pride movements came about, so they were highly faced with the problem of racism and other hardships. Another character relation would be Beneatha and Cory, they both have dreams that are only slightly unrealistic, they are always striving to do very good in these activities for their dreams. Cory wants to become a football player and Beneatha wants to jump from one dream to the next.

The themes of both these plays are similar because they both deal with Race and Family, they are both about black families dealing with the racism in the 50's and 60's. They are also both dealing with money indifferences. In these two plays most of th characters make stupid impulse decisions, such as both Walter and troy lashing out and having drink binges and getting drunk. Walter ended up making the bad decision to invest in a liquor store with a not so reliant partner, and Troy made the not so smart decision to go and have an affair with another woman, and end up getting her pregnant. Most of these decisions were worked up over the stress of money, family, and sustaining themselves.
