Scenario 1: job interview

Characters:

Angelica (interviewer)

Andres (candidate)

Conversation:

Angelica: Good morning andres. Thank you for coming in today. Could you start by walking me through your experience?

Andres: Good morning angelica. Thank you for this opportunity. I have been working as an accounting assistant for about four years, primarily for hydrocarbon transportation companies. In my previous position, I managed the company's general payroll and third-party payments.

Angelica: That is impressive. Could you give me a specific example of how much money you handled in third-party payments?

Andres: Of course. This year, I worked with a company called Adispetrol, where we took a 30 percent cut of every revenue the company recorded to advance payments to third parties, thus paying off our debt with them.

Angelica: How do you keep your work organized when it comes to paying off outstanding loans and bank advances?

Andres: I regularly attend revenue management sessions with my team, and participate in webinars with the managers in charge to authorize payment releases. I also dedicate time each week to reading case studies and experimenting with new tools.

Angelica: What interests you most about this accounting assistant position?

Andres: I am particularly drawn to your company's innovative approach to customer acquisition and data driven culture. I believe my experience in scaling and operations would be valuable for your growth phase.

Step 2: Analysis of the language used

Formality: Andres maintains a respectful tone and uses appropriate structures for an interview.

Vocabulary: Specific vocabulary from the accounting and área financial was used in the parts "hydrocarbon transportation companies", "third-party payments", "revenue management" and "payment releases".

Grammar: Correct use of the present perfect continuous ("I have been working"), past simple ("I managed") and conditional ("would be valuable").

Pragmatics:

Courtesy: “Thank you for this opportunity,” “Of course.”

Clarity: Explains accounting processes in an understandable way.

Confidence: Presents himself as competent without being arrogant.

Key points to improve:

Coherence: I feel that the interview should have focused on accounting aspects instead of diverting into different topics also I should have used more technical and specific terms from the accounting profession.

The teacher asks the students to debate why learning a second language, especially English, is important in modern life. Gabriela and her classmates share their opinions and experiences.

Dialogue:

Teacher: Good morning, everyone! Today we're going to talk about the importance of learning a second language. Who's up for it?

Gabriela: Good morning, teacher! I think learning another language is essential today because it helps us communicate with people from different countries.

Teacher: Excellent point, Gabriela! Communication is very important. What other reasons can you think of?

Gabriela: Well, it also gives us more job opportunities. Many companies prefer people who speak English fluently.

Classmate (Juan): I agree with you, Gabriela. In my case, I want to travel and work abroad, so English is a great advantage.

Gabriela: Exactly! In addition to work, I think learning English also helps us understand other cultures. For example, when I listen to music or watch movies in English, I can learn new words and expressions.

Teacher: What a great example! So, you're saying that learning languages can also be fun and part of our daily lives?

Gabriela: Yes, teacher. I practice every day by watching videos, reading stories, and sometimes talking to my friends in English.

Teacher: Great, Gabriela! That's the right attitude! And you, Ana? Do you agree with Gabriela's opinion?

Ana: Yes, I share it. I think learning English gives us more confidence when speaking with people from other countries.

Teacher: Great! I'm so happy to hear your ideas. Remember, learning a new language opens the door to many opportunities: professional, cultural, and personal.

Gabriela: Thank you, teacher. I really enjoy learning English because I know it will help me in the future.

Reflection – Scenario 1: At the Airport – Planning a Trip

In this scenario, the language used was clear, courteous, and formal, appropriate for an interaction between a passenger and an airline agent. The dialogue demonstrated good use of polite expressions such as "Good morning," "please," "thank you," and "you're welcome." These expressions helped maintain a respectful and professional tone throughout the conversation. The vocabulary was also well-chosen, using precise travel-related words such as "flight," "boarding pass," "baggage," "gate," and "security check," making the communication clear and realistic. The grammar was precise, with correct sentence structures and verb tenses. For example, the phrase "Could you show me your passports and tickets?" is grammatically correct and courteous.

A strength of the dialogue is that it reflects the natural English used in airports. Follow cultural norms of politeness and use modal verbs correctly (could, would) to make requests smoother and more formal. However, there are some areas where I need to improve. Some sentences could be made smoother by adding connectives or transitions; for example, changing "Okay. Is there a weight limit for luggage?" to "Okay, thanks. By the way, is there a weight limit for luggage?" to make it sound more natural. Additionally, the repetition of words like "great" could be replaced with synonyms like "perfect" or "okay" to further enrich my vocabulary.

Improving these small details would make the conversation sound even more natural and professional. The dialogue already demonstrates an understanding of formality and politeness in everyday communication, essential skills for successful interaction in English-speaking environments.

Reflection – Scenario 2: Debate in an English Class

In this classroom scenario, the language was clear, respectful, and slightly formal, which is appropriate for an academic setting. The dialogue showed a balanced interaction between the teacher and students, using expressions such as "I think," "I agree with you," "Exactly," and "Thank you, teacher." These phrases politely express opinions and create a cooperative tone. The vocabulary used was appropriate and related to the topic, including words such as "communicate," "job opportunities," "trust," and "cultures," which made the conversation meaningful and connected to real-life situations. The grammar was correct and consistent with intermediate-level English, for example, in the sentences "Learning a new language opens the door to many opportunities" and "I practice every day by watching videos."

A strong point of this dialogue is the natural conversational flow and the use of connectives such as "well," "exactly," and "in addition to," which make the exchange sound fluid. However, one area where I could improve would be the introduction of more varied academic vocabulary. For example, instead of repeating "important," I could use alternatives such as "essential," "valuable," or "beneficial." Additionally, students could include more examples or explanations to support their ideas, such as mentioning specific skills they develop while learning languages.

Another improvement could be to expand responses with short connecting expressions such as "from my point of view" or "I completely agree because..." to make them sound more natural in academic discussions. This dialogue demonstrates an appropriate and courteous tone, demonstrating effective communication in an educational setting.

Reflection on Scenario 1: Job Interview

The job interview scenario demonstrates how language functions formally to express professionalism, respect, and competence. In this situation, both the interviewer and the candidate use structured, polite, and grammatically accurate sentences that reflect the seriousness of the context. Formal greetings such as “Good afternoon” and “Please have a seat” establish a respectful tone, while expressions like “Thank you. It’s nice to meet you” show appropriate social etiquette. The vocabulary is clearly chosen to suit a professional setting, including words such as strengths, degree, teamwork, and professional growth, which communicate confidence and relevant experience without sounding casual.

The candidate’s responses are well-organized and concise, using clear grammar and varied tenses to convey both past experiences and current abilities. For example, “I recently finished my degree” shows correct use of the past tense, while “I communicate well” uses the present simple to describe ongoing skills. Pragmatically, the exchange shows mutual politeness and cultural awareness, as both speakers respect turn-taking and use formal tone markers common in English-speaking business cultures.

Reflecting on this scenario highlights how important language choice is when trying to make a positive impression. Formal vocabulary, correct grammar, and polite expressions are essential for demonstrating professionalism. The conversation also emphasizes that tone and word choice must match the context; being too casual could seem disrespectful, while being overly formal might sound unnatural. This balance between professionalism and approachability reflects the social expectations of workplace communication and illustrates how language is shaped by purpose, audience, and cultural norms.

Reflection on Scenario 2: Classroom Discussion

The classroom discussion scenario illustrates how language is used in an academic but interactive context. Unlike the formal tone of the job interview, the register here is neutral to semi-formal, creating an environment that encourages participation and exchange of ideas. The teacher’s use of open-ended questions, such as “Any ideas?” and “What challenges might people face with that?”, promotes student engagement and critical thinking. Meanwhile, the students respond politely using expressions like “I think,” “I agree,” and “Maybe”, which soften opinions and show respect for others’ contributions. This reflects the cooperative and supportive communication style typical in educational settings.

The vocabulary used is academic and topic-specific, including pollution, recycling, public transportation, and government. These words are appropriate for a classroom discussion about environmental issues and demonstrate the use of specialized language for educational purposes. Grammatically, the sentences are simple but accurate, allowing for clear expression without confusion. Modal verbs such as should, could, and might help students express suggestions and possibilities — key skills in academic discourse.

Pragmatically, the interaction models respectful dialogue and positive feedback. The teacher validates students’ ideas with encouraging comments like “That’s a great point” and “Very true,” reinforcing confidence and maintaining a friendly classroom atmosphere. Cultural norms of politeness, cooperation, and active listening are observed throughout the exchange.

Reflecting on this scenario highlights that effective communication in academic settings depends on clarity, respect, and collaboration. Language must balance accuracy with approachability so students feel comfortable participating. The use of polite expressions, supportive feedback, and relevant vocabulary allows meaningful interaction and knowledge sharing. This scenario demonstrates that classroom communication is not only about correctness but also about building understanding and community through language.

The doctor also used empathetic and professional language, responding with phrases such as 'I see' and 'That could be part of the problem', showing attention and care.

Strengths include the correct use of verb tenses, particularly the present perfect ('I've been feeling...'), which accurately conveys a condition that began in the past and continues in the present. The vocabulary was simple yet medically relevant, incorporating terms such as 'dizzy', 'tired', 'headache', and 'blood pressure'. The dialogue was coherent and easy to follow, helping to build trust between patient and doctor.

However, there is still room for improvement. For example, the patient could have provided more detailed descriptions of their symptoms, such as explaining the intensity or frequency of the headache. The doctor could have asked additional questions to gather more specific information. These small adjustments would help both parties to achieve a clearer and more effective exchange of information.

Step 4: Specific examples and suggestions

Example 1 (vocabulary): Instead of saying 'a bit dizzy and tired', the patient could say 'slightly dizzy and constantly tired' to describe their symptoms more accurately.

Example 2 (detail): The patient could add 'I also feel weak and have trouble concentrating' to provide the doctor with more useful information.

Suggestion: Before the appointment, the patient could prepare a short list of their symptoms and when they began, to help them communicate effectively.

Scenario 2: Shopping Conversation

Step 3: Reflection

The interaction between the customer and the shop assistant in this store conversation was friendly, polite and natural. Greetings such as 'Good afternoon!' and 'Hi!' established a positive tone from the outset. Both participants used clear, direct language that was appropriate for the shopping context. The customer made specific requests, such as 'I'm looking for a black, medium-sized jacket', demonstrating clarity and confidence. The shop assistant responded helpfully and professionally, offering assistance ('Would you like to try this one on?') and providing clear price information.

A key strength of this dialogue was the use of polite expressions and transactional vocabulary related to shopping, such as 'try on', 'on sale', 'cash or card', and 'I'll take it'. The tone remained cordial and cooperative throughout, reflecting an effective use of social and communicative skills in customer service.

However, the dialogue could be improved by adding small conversational elements to make it sound more natural. For instance, the shop assistant could compliment the customer on their choice ('That colour suits you well'), or the customer could ask a question about the product features ('Is it waterproof?'). Including these details would make the interaction more engaging and realistic.

Step 4: Specific Examples and Suggestions

Example 1 (Vocabulary): Add expressions such as 'I’m interested in...' or 'Do you have this in another colour?' to increase conversational variety.

Example 2 (detail): The assistant could say, 'This jacket is made of cotton and has inner pockets,' to provide more product information.

Suggestion: Practise common shopping phrases to improve fluency and sound more natural in real customer service situations.
