An informal characteristic of nursing is troubleshooting. As a collaborator, being able to work with others of differing fields and views can be difficult. The ability to think critically and troubleshoot is an invaluable skill that is difficult to teach, but important to practice. The population-focused nurse is benefited by having ideas and confidence to share them as well as listening to others' explore their opinions. I would use troubleshooting in health promotion interventions by exploring avenues that would assist the population in reaching their goals. This may include reaching out to resources, involving stakeholders, or team collaboration.

A formal characteristic of nursing that is imperative is integrity. The moral and ethical belief to stand up for what is right. There are many instances in our careers where we may be faced between a decision where we can do the right thing or the easy thing and the trust we have with our patients and coworkers is fragile and easily damaged. As nurses of any field, integrity is the foundation on evidence-based practice and compassionate care. In my own practice and in health promotion interventions, I would utilize integrity to advocate for those who face barriers to accessing care or increased risks for wellness disparities. My goal is to always be honest with my intentions and advocate for doing the morally just action.

-Ashley Martino

1. Informal Leadership Characteristic: Empathy - Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It's an essential characteristic for nurses as it allows them to connect with patients on a deeper level, and understand their needs, fears, and concerns. This understanding can lead to more personalized care and better health outcomes. For example, a nurse with empathy can design health promotion interventions that take into account the unique circumstances and challenges faced by the aggregate. This could involve creating interventions that are culturally sensitive or tailored to the specific needs of the population. 2. Formal Leadership Characteristic: Strategic Planning - Strategic planning involves setting goals, determining actions to achieve the goals, and mobilizing resources to execute the actions. In a nursing context, strategic planning can help ensure that health promotion interventions are effective and efficient. For example, a nurse could use strategic planning to identify the most pressing health issues in the aggregate, develop interventions to address these issues, and allocate resources in a way that maximizes impact. In my own practice setting, I would use empathy to understand the unique needs and challenges of the aggregate. This understanding would inform the design of my health promotion interventions. For example, if I was working with a low-income population, I might create interventions that are low-cost or free. I would use strategic planning to ensure that these interventions are implemented effectively. This could involve setting clear goals for the interventions, developing a plan to achieve these goals, and mobilizing the necessary resources. For example, I might set a goal to reduce smoking rates in the aggregate by 10% within a year, develop a plan that includes smoking cessation classes and support groups, and mobilize resources such as funding and staff to implement the plan.

Ronald Robert

Adaptability is a crucial nursing leadership characteristic for population-focused nurses due to the dynamic nature of community health and the diverse needs of populations. Population-focused nurses must be able to navigate changing environments, emerging health concerns, and evolving community demographics effectively.

In my practice setting, as a community health nurse serving a diverse urban population, I would utilize adaptability to create health promotion interventions for an aggregate, such as homeless individuals. Given the fluid nature of homelessness and its associated challenges, including access to healthcare, mental health issues, and substance abuse, an adaptable approach is essential.

Firstly, I would assess the specific needs and preferences of the homeless population through community engagement and needs assessments. By remaining flexible and open-minded, I can gather valuable insights and adapt interventions to meet the unique circumstances and preferences of this population.

Secondly, I would collaborate with community organizations, healthcare providers, and local authorities to develop tailored interventions that address the multifaceted health needs of the homeless aggregate. This might involve establishing mobile healthcare clinics, providing access to mental health services and substance abuse treatment, and offering resources for housing assistance and basic needs.

Additionally, I would continuously monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, remaining adaptable to feedback and adjusting strategies as needed to ensure optimal outcomes. By demonstrating adaptability, I can effectively lead initiatives that promote health and well-being among vulnerable populations, ultimately improving health outcomes and enhancing the overall health of the community. - Kesha Amin

A nursing leadership characteristic that is important for population focused nurses to demonstrate is efficiency. When dealing with rapid policy changes, keeping track of things like immunizations, illness response, and follow up you must be able to be flexible and efficient with data collection. Another reason that efficiency is important is the fact that it allows for allocation of resources and helps with minimal resource waste. Efficiency is something that is used heavily regardless of the type of nursing that you do. For example, I work on a medical surgical floor and being efficient is a characteristic that you must possess to be successful. At any given time, you can have six patients to care for and must be prepared for the unexpected. Someone can have a change in level of consciousness or change in condition, vital signs can rapidly change, patients get rapidly transferred out.

Efficiency would be used to create health promotion intervention for an aggregate in my own practice setting would be an example of heart disease patients. Frequently we have patients with CHF exacerbation. We must be efficient in ensuring that the diuretics they are receiving are effectively working. By monitoring strict intake and output, monitoring for changes to vital signs, daily weights. You must remain organized with the information you are dealing with. Another thing is then using their present health condition which is the CHF exacerbation and providing education to help reduce the risks and provide optimal health promotion and symptom management through the various levels to hopefully reduce the occurrence of these symptoms happening again if able.

1. A crucial nursing leadership characteristic for population-focused nurses to demonstrate is vision. Vision in nursing leadership refers to the ability to see the big picture, anticipate future healthcare needs, and develop long-term goals and strategies to improve health outcomes for entire populations. This characteristic is vital because it enables nurses to envision innovative ways to address complex health challenges and drive positive change on a broader scale.

2. In a surgical unit setting, vision is a critical nursing leadership characteristic for population-focused nurses to demonstrate as it allows them to anticipate and address evolving healthcare needs and trends in surgical patient care. By showcasing vision, nurse leaders can develop innovative health promotion interventions tailored to the specific needs of the surgical patient population, such as enhancing pre-operative education programs, implementing advanced pain management strategies, and introducing patient-centered surgical recovery protocols. With a clear vision for improving patient outcomes and experiences in surgical units, nurse leaders can drive transformative changes that optimize care delivery, support recovery, and promote overall well-being for surgical patients, ultimately enhancing the quality of care and outcomes in the surgical unit setting.

Informal

Active listening is a key quality of informal nursing leadership in population-focused nursing, as it allows nurses to truly understand the needs and concerns of the community they serve. By actively listening, community health nurses can build stronger relationships with community members, ensuring important information is not overlooked and enabling them to address health issues promptly and effectively. Through active listening, nurses can show empathy and compassion towards community members, gaining their trust and cooperation. This leadership trait also helps nurses gather valuable insights from the community, informing the development of targeted interventions to improve population health outcomes. Within my practice setting, I would utilize active listening as a means to actively engage with the population's concerns. By doing so, I would gain valuable insights into the pressing issues at hand, enabling me to prioritize them effectively. I can also create a supportive and empathetic environment by giving my undivided attention to their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Through this process, I can establish a strong rapport with the individuals, fostering trust and open communication.

Formal

Effective communication skills are essential in formal nursing leadership in the context of population-focused nursing. They help prevent misunderstandings and misinterpretations, which are crucial in addressing the numerous concerns and issues that arise within the community. In population-focused nursing, clear and concise communication is imperative for nursing leaders to convey information accurately, listen attentively to the needs of the population, and create a collaborative and supportive environment for healthcare providers and the community. Furthermore, effective communication skills enable nursing leaders to advocate for the needs of the population, facilitate collaboration with other healthcare professionals and community stakeholders, and promote health promotion and disease prevention initiatives. Within my nursing practice, I would employ proficient communication techniques to implement primary prevention strategies. This would involve educating various communities about pressing issues that require immediate attention, such as the significance of immunization, the benefits of smoking cessation, and the advantages of regular exercise. By effectively communicating these essential messages, I aim to raise awareness and promote healthier lifestyles among individuals.

-Guadalupe Pond

A nurse leader should exhibit the characteristic of being collaborative. I believe that collaborative nurses also have excellent communication skills, which is important in population-focused nursing. For example, community health nurses (CHNs), such as school nurses have different resources and collaboration with other agencies. My CHN has collaborated with the DuPage County Health Department to promote health and disease prevention among the youth. Resources include STI and immunization clinics, and the Narcan policy that my CHN initiated and helped other school nurses to implement in their school districts. In my practice, I would use collaboration to work with my nurse assistants, and other nurses in caring for our patients. I will also collaborate with our APRN in making decisions that will help our patients maintain their well-being. I will also extend my collaboration with other specialties and agencies such as pain management practitioners, hospice nurses, home health nurses, and many others during the transition of patient care. I believe that my patients will benefit from resources collaborated with these specialties because then, my patients will have more options in their care.

Communication skills ensure proper staffing and important communication getting communicating to keep the team running smoothly. Without communication there could be a lot of miscommunications as well as missed goals. This characteristic is vital because it enables nurses to be aware what is going on the broader level and keeps policies and procedures clear. In a intensive care unit, communication skills are important to possess especially with patients and providers. When educating patients on health promotion interventions, such as obesity, communication skills are important. Educating a patient on obesity and how to prevent hospitalization to the intensive care unit. Working with the low-income aggregate in the community, it is important to ensure communication skills and educate the patients prior to discharge. Additionally, I would monitor if the appropriate communication skills are being employed when communicating education skills to patients and provides. Depending on the patient previous knowledge, education level, and real life feedback of the education. I would adjust my communication skills. This is not limited to patients, it can also be used with providers and co-workers.

In public health nursing, the commitment of leaders involves striving for high performance and continuously seeking ways to improve their achievement is an important role of leadership. Empathy is another essential characteristic of nursing, not just only in public health nursing. Since public health is more focused on vulnerable populations, some aggregates may misrepresent to the general public and might have negative thoughts and opinions towards the aggregates. Therefore public nurse leaders must demonstrate empathy by acknowledging the feelings and perspectives of others. Public health nurse leaders should promote cultural competency among the employees to prevent misconceptions of the aggregate from interfering with their work to promote public well-being. This ensures that the team remains sensitive to the needs of diverse populations and fosters an environment where all individuals feel respected, cared and supported.

I believe adaptability is an important leadership quality for population focused nurses. Adaptability means being able to flexibly adjust to changing situations. Community mental health nurses need to adapt because mental health issues in communities are always changing. This involves adjusting interventions to fit the needs of individuals and staying resilient when situations are difficult. Adaptability also helps nurses to provide the best possible care that meets the ever-changing mental health needs of the communities they are working with.

In my role as a community mental health nurse, I use adaptability as a leadership characteristic to engage in health promotion initiatives that are suited to the needs of the population I work with. This involves conducting comprehensive assessments to understand the mental health challenges and barriers with each individual patient. I make sure interventions are flexible, as to offer a variety of approaches to assisting my patients in their mental health journeys. I collaborate with my patients and offer a variety of approaches from workshops, support groups, and other local organizations. Through adaptability, I'm able to create care plans that address the needs for the people in the communities in which I live and work in.

I feel a very important leadership characteristics for community nurses to have is adaptability. With a community health nurses, things are bound to change throughout the day and someone needs to be able to adapt to that. This may be in the way of a new patient being added on half way through you day that needs to be seen. In the terms of my community health nurse, a Sexual assault examiner, it may happen at any point of the day. It could be at 0330 and still, they are expected to respond. Being able to adapt allows them to show the most in leadership.

An intervention that can follow adaptability would be increasing times patients can be visiting in a clinic. I feel like these intervention follows adaptability because of the fact that it shows how one should be adaptive to others schedules. Sometimes this can be beneficial for those who need appointments before 8am or after 5pm because of their own work schedules. As someone who works night shift, it can be very frustrating to wake up at 1pm to go to a hair appointment or stay up till 9am after a shift for a doctors appointment.

Collaboration is one of the essential qualities in nursing leadership, the nurses have to collaborate with the health care providers, community agencies and the clients of the communities. Collaboration means involving various parties, including professionals from different disciplines as well as community members and selected stakeholders, in the process of problem-solving and aiming at the ultimate good of the population. This is critical because often, population health solutions become multi-faceted, and different individuals and organizations contribute the diverse resources and competency that it needs.
When it comes to working on a health promotion initiative, collaboration should be seen as an essential factor in a practice setting .

Here's how it can be applied:
Identifying Needs and Assets: As a nurse focused on population, you inescapably cope with the community people, the health departments of local and the other healthcare providers to carry out the health needs and resources assessment of the targeted population. Through the presence of varied opinions, you will get access to a richer and overall better knowing of the community’s strengths and weaknesses.
Developing Interventions: Collaboration would enable the co-creation of solutions that are proportionate to the community's special requirements and environment. As the methods evolve, I believe that the future holds greater prospects for community health workers to improve comprehensive care. As a community health worker, you would be required to network both within and outside the community. This networking including the interactions of health professionals, policymakers of all levels and all other stakeholders. Thus you will manage to developed interventions which are culturally sensitive, evidence-based and sustainable.
Resource Mobilization: Collaboration in its due time opens doors to resources that are beyond the windowshop of the work scope of the nurses alone. This can be done by using joint efforts of authorities, non-profit and advocacy organizations, multilateral agencies and associations for developing additional resources like finance, facilities, and expertise to support health promotion initiatives.
Implementation and Evaluation: Working together ensures collective ownership for the operationalization and appraisal of health maximization reforms. Through the process of stakeholder engagement at every stage you can have support, sustainable development, and commitments. First, collaboration leads to on-going monitoring and evaluation in order to measure the role of interventions and adapt them to better meet the needs required.
Collaboration with others would be my tool to develop a health promotion intervention which addresses this problem of my practice setting neighboring community, with obesity as the main point of focus. I would first start a partnership with community leaders, health care workers, nutritionist, physical educators, instructors, and policymakers to have an awareness of the underlying factors of obesity in our community and explore solutions to it.
We would design an integrated intervention, which includes nutrition education classes, making healthy foods available and cheap policy changes to healthy areas, and assisting people to find healthy lifestyles. By pooling the team's unique knowledge and experience into one overall strategy we can design a full-spectrum intervention which goes to the heart of all the complicated factors leading up to weight problems and lays the foundation for the culture of better health in the community.

An informal nursing leadership characteristic thats essential is efficiency. Being efficient in because of the many changes that occur in population nursing and the manny aggregates that are encountered in each community being efficient in research in obtaining the resources the community increases the productivity needed to ensure no time is wasted to assist the community. A formal characteristic would be integrity. As a telemetry nurse the patient's endure many issues with health and their families as well. Integrity is such a valuable asset for population nursing and health promotion. we as leaders in health care have a responsibility to ensure that all we service can depend on the honesty and truth in what we give. Having strong morals and being upright and honest every step of the way gains the trust needed to get every opportunity for the patients care to be successful. Patients cooperate when they trust the care and procedures performed. this is also true in the community. If your not giving the community the real numbers of what is going on and what the problems are within the community and what can be done there will be no trust and participation from them. We must be transparent in our approach for better outcomes.

A nursing leadership characteristic that is important for population-focused nurses to demonstrate is consensus-building. Being able to build consensus allows the population-focused nurse leader to better develop policies. Policy development is one of the most important roles of the population-focused nurse, and by being able to build consensus between groups, the nurse leader can have more success in guiding the development of policy and ensuring that input from stakeholders is being considered.

In my practice, building consensus can be a very important part of developing health promotion interventions, because in the pediatric setting, there are many stakeholders to consider, as well as more strict existing guidelines on how pediatric populations must be treated and protected. By building consensus, the nurse leader in my practice setting can develop health promotion interventions using input from families, health care providers, social workers and others to determine what interventions are needed and appropriate.

A vital nursing leadership characteristic for population-focused nurses to demonstrate is advocacy. Advocacy entails taking action and speaking up for our patients and communities- to promote their health and well-being. Nurses working in population-focused roles often engage within communities with underserved groups of individuals facing obstacles to healthcare access. With advocacy, nurses can advocate for policies and programs, such as vaccine campaigns, which help overcome these barriers and ensure that all individuals have access to healthcare. Ultimately, this will improve health outcomes for our patients and communities.

In my practice setting, I apply advocacy as a leadership characteristic to aid in developing health promotion interventions that are tailored to the specific needs of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I would advocate for improved access to nutritious meals and snacks for our residents. This includes collaborating with schools and healthcare providers to ensure that our residents can access healthy food options that meet their specific dietary needs. Additionally, I advocate with my team for increased education among parents and caregivers about the importance of physical activity for children with IDD by providing information and support. By using advocacy as a leadership characteristic, I can develop health promotion initiates to enhance my residents’ holistic health and wellness.

Population-Focused Nursing Leadership Characteristic: Creative Thinking - Cheska Ramirez

A nursing leadership characteristic that is important for population focused nurses to demonstrate is creative thinking. Creative thinking is an essential component of population-focused nursing as it allows for innovative solutions to complex healthcare challenges. By thinking outside the box and exploring new ideas, population focused nurses can develop strategies that address the needs of entire populations rather than just individual patients. Additionally, creative thinking can also lead to the implementation of new technologies and approaches to care delivery that improve access to healthcare services for underserved populations. By embracing creativity and innovation, nurse leaders can make a significant impact on the health outcomes of entire communities. Creative thinking can especially be utilized within the acute care setting. For example, I work on a cardiac-telemetry unit and thinking creatively helps when standard nursing interventions no longer help with a patient’s condition. Furthermore, creative thinking also helps when communicating with patients. There are times where I encounter patients who are more disoriented or struggling to understand, and thinking outside the box helps to ensure that I am communicating with this patient population clearly and compassionately. Furthermore, creative thinking is also used for this patient population when they need to be reoriented.

Creative thinking is a powerful tool in promoting health and well-being. By approaching health promotion with innovative and imaginative ideas, individuals can find unique solutions to common health issues. Creative thinking allows for the exploration of new approaches to traditional problems, leading to more effective and sustainable outcomes. Within my unit, I frequently encounter stroke patients, and every stroke patient requires different rehabilitation interventions. For example, for individuals who may suffer from global aphasia, creative thinking may be utilized to determine unique ways that the individual can communicate their wants and needs.

Adaptability: an important characteristic to the population focused nurse (Daniela Sanchez)

Adaptability is an important characteristic for all the population focused nurses to have due to the fast turnaround in diseases, population, technology, and CDC recommendations. Although covid struck us years ago it’s an easy example of how adaptability was conducted. Daily there were new recommendations on masking, vaccinations, distance, and isolation! Even now where I work the infectious disease MDs continue to change the isolation recommendations and policies including when Remdesivir is needed or not. As a nurse leader adaptability is important because things can change at any moment and regardless of the changes or not having great equipment and resources appropriate care and focus on the population’s needs are still the goal. For example, my CHN works at a low-income grammar school, and she doesn’t have medical equipment or even band aids at times, but she adapted to that environment by buying and bringing in her own donations for her kids. In my own practice I use adaptability by trying my best to learn the new protocols that may change and staffing issues to patient ratios. It can be tough to not have a helping hand and frustration can arise fast when I have a critical patient, but I learn to adapt and make sure all my patients are safe. No matter what is going on and what has changed and if there’s no supplies I make the shift work and assure my patients receive the best care and feel comfortable.

Being collaborative is fundamental for population-focused nurses, particularly in OB/GYN outpatient clinics where holistic care is crucial. This collaborative approach facilitates comprehensive care by allowing nurses to work alongside obstetricians, gynecologists, midwives, social workers, and other healthcare professionals, addressing the multifaceted needs of patients. Each member of the healthcare team brings specialized knowledge, which, when combined, enriches the understanding of specific health issues and refines interventions accordingly. By collaborating with colleagues and community organizations, nurses can develop holistic health promotion interventions that consider physical, emotional, social, and environmental factors. This collaboration promotes patient-centered care by involving patients in decision-making processes and tailoring interventions to their unique needs and preferences. Furthermore, collaboration maximizes the impact of available resources by pooling together expertise, funding, and infrastructure. To create effective health promotion interventions, nurses collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, engage stakeholders in planning sessions, implement interventions collaboratively, evaluate effectiveness, and ensure sustainability through ongoing collaboration and resource mobilization. By embracing collaboration as a leadership characteristic, population-focused nurses can address the diverse health needs of individuals and communities, ultimately improving health outcomes and quality of life.

A formal nursing leadership characteristic that is essential in the practice of a population focused nurse is communication. To be effective in changing policy, collaborating with with necessary stakeholders and patients, and educating the community the nurse must possess exceptional communication skills. An informal leadership skill that is paramount within the Intensive Care Unit is empathy. Empathy is a skill that allows us to reflect on how our message is received by patients and their families within the ICU. We are often delivering news to patients loved ones of ill outcomes and working to support them through either a transition to limited care, palliative care, or hospice. In these instances we are looked to for guidance in how to proceed and establish follow up services. Due to the vulnerability of the patients and the families at this time, we as nurses must be empathetic to the grief, loss and confusion they may have while communicating information clearly so they can understand it.

I feel that adaptability is an important characteristic of a community health nurse. Being flexible to meet the needs of the patient, your community, and your co-workers is an important characteristic of a leadership nurse. A CHN leader would have to adapt to policy change at the national, state, and local levels. Furthermore, a leadership nurse would have to adapt to changing mandates and procedures in the community. Finally, a leadership nurse would have to adapt and implement nursing care practices that best service their community as the changes occur. In my setting, I use the characteristic of adaptability. I work for a major health insurance provider on a Medicare Advantage team. I have to adapt and be flexible to guidelines as they change constantly. I have to change my work processes and the criteria that I review against annually, and most times these processes and guidelines change every few months. Furthermore, I have to adapt daily as the needs of the members and my own team members/co-workers change daily.

Population-focused nursing leadership characteristic : Data analysis skills

A vital nursing leadership characteristic for population-focused nurses is data analysis skills. It is the ability to work with data to see patterns, trends to draw meaningful conclusions from them. The levels of population focused nursing practice includes individual/family, community and system. When it comes to the level of community, system and specific populations, population-focused nurse leaders are required to manage the large number of events. As of January 2022, there were over 314 million cases and over 5.5 million deaths notified since the start of the pandemic. It highlighted the population-focused nurses' data analysis skills to determine relationship between cases and deaths and health variants such as socio-economic and health systems. The analysis skills enabled them to develop and implement population specific strategies and to respond to the public health emergency effectively.

In my practice at an ambulatory surgical center, analyze the data in unexpected occurrences is very important part in preventing cancellation and complications from surgeries/procedures. Same-day surgical delays and cancellation often occur due to patient's inability to follow npo instruction, and smoking cannabis on the same of procedure. I believe that analyzing the data in surgical delay and cancellation will help nurse leaders to develop clear pre-operative instructions, which will not only decrease the delay/cancellation rate but also improve the patient quality of care.

I believe receptivity and adaptability are the most desirable traits for a population focused nurse leader. As a floor nurse for numerous years, there must be a shift in the focus of medical primary care model (Illness model of care) to public health primary health care model (wellness optimum health model of care) (NURS 353, 2024) The new population focused nurse leader must be able to accept the new concept of concentrating on a specific need of her community or her aggregate. This capacity to modify purpose is efficient because resources are specific to the aggregate. Due to receptivity and adaptability healthcare is economically more efficient.

As a charge nurse in a long-term care facility, receptivity is utilized daily as well as adaptability. Residents are very aware of their rights and responsibilities regarding health care, it is often difficult to see residents who refuse treatment or medication. However, as a nurse leader, I must be receptive to their desires and adapt my nursing interventions to comply with their wishes. Examples would be to encourage family, resident, and doctor conferences to allow understanding of medical treatment or allow residents to choose Hospice or Palliative care.

I think that an important characteristic for a population-focused nurse would be motivation. With population-focused nursing, you are typically caring for patients and people that are in vulnerable populations that have minimal to no resources or support. Taking care of these people can be tiring and defeating, especially when there are lack of funds to help support them or laws that have been passed that do the opposite of helping them. Being motivated to help these people and make change is critical. It is important to stay motivated and focused on the end goal, and all of the small goals along the way. without motivation, there will be no drive or purpose to care for these people and burnout will transpire. staying motivated to help them and having that desire to make change can help the right people be population-focused nurses. I think that I would want to use motivation to push for more funding for specific communities such as LGBTQ+ people. Funding can help with providing resources for LGBTQ+ people such as a clinic for STD checks and basic care, food banks, and crisis centers where people can call into or visit who are experiencing hardships. Staying motivated to get these resources available to people is not easy, so it is imperative that the nurse has it within them to help push themselves and show up for these people everyday.
