I hadn't thought about grading with regards to the teacher, but it makes a lot of sense that grading can be a LOT of work so it feels like a kind of necessary evil for both students and teachers alike, but I would be willing to teachwithout grades if possible

I believe grading can help students know what they understand and don't understand. There SHOULD be a way to retake when you do improve in your learning.

I feel no matter what grading system you use no matter what word, letter or number, grading system there will always be that word letter, or number correlates with one being the best and one being the worst.

I would argue that grades are more valuable at older ages rather than younger ones, Young children need feedback more than a score in order to make sure they are on the right track, and removing focus on the score for young students will allow them to focus on what they need to improve personally rather than get the best score.

I feel like it really depends on the how much the teacher is willing to change, if the teacher is completely comfortable with the idea of no grades and instead giving intense feedback then standard base grading may work but I feel it really depends on how the teacher handles it.

I absolutely think there should be opportunities to retake tests and to at least bump up grades. With numbers grading it allows for more opportunities to show children that they CAN do it

At my middle school and high school, there was a email send out every Friday that showed your child’s grades and their progress and it definitely put a lot of pressure on students to make sure their grades were really good at the end of the week!

I think percent grading is better than letter grading because you get to know where your at and if your points away from failing so both could be good but not completely switching to letter grading

Conferences were always mandatory in elementary for teacher to be able to talk the parents about their kid(s). But i feel like once the child gets to middle school and high school, they tend to not want their parents to go to conferences because they feel like they get yelled at when they get home or get in trouble because of grades. I personally feel like whatever grade you are in you should at least go to conferences once a year so that the parents get an understanding of what their child is like in the classroom and how they preform academically.

If GPAs are based on a percentage how does standard-based grading do that? And if percentages go along with them isn't that just traditional grading just with better sounding words?

For me, I think grading is very important if you're gonna let a student retry so they can improve it, but sometimes they can damage a student when they don't get the retaking option. I had moments where I would stress out about my grade so much that I started to get grey hairs to the point I just dropped. Grades shouldn't stress a student out.

Yes one big test always hurt students grades an also I takes down the work load on the teachers and it’s less stressful on students

I think teachers should have different studying opportunities. And different formats for studying. It's a lot of extra work but its for the betterment of your students.

From personal experience, my 2nd semester of junior year I was working about 40-45 hours a week on top of going to school full time and my grades absolutely plummeted and because I kept seeing those F's and 0's I felt way too overwhelmed to even begin to catch up.

Luckily, my teachers allowed me to retake majority of my major tests and turn in late assignments so I was able to catch up. A lot of student don't have that luxury to retake tests or submit late work and I think in high school that is something that should absolutely be necessary in schools. There is no point to punish a student who wants to make a change in their grades- even if it took them a long time to make that decision.

But also making a too short test may not be beneficial because if they get so many wrong they’re more likely to fail

My stats professor gave us a practice test before our actual test so we knew what needed to be studied instead of studying and practicing problems that we already had a strong understanding of. It helped me get an A in Statistics when I believed I was gonna fail due to not getting math at all.

Going off of that having teachers and students studying together and showing the students that how it is done properly and step by step and working at a good pacas for all students and working a little bit more for the little more challenged or disabilities of set students of that class

Yes feedback helps a lot to show students what they did wrong and what they need to work on or get help on

I heard a story of a teacher who would do end of the year assessments where you can plead your case on why you deserve an A or a B or why you deserve to pass. The person telling the story said people would manipulate a story so they could turn their F into an A. The teach also had favorites and even for students who never showed up she would pass but what do you think about tracking your students all year and have them explain why they should pass but you also have your own information you've collected?

I feel limited open notes are beneficial for students because they get to choose what they want to, if they are taking notes that means they are choosing what they need to know which proves they are learning from the class

My roommate studied so hard for her vet tech exam and was only able to pass 2 out of 4 the first time around so she wasn't able to get into her program right away. She studied for a whole month non-stop, and I felt so bad for her.

I see tests as a way to develop how a student can work under pressure, when out in the workforce no matter where we will have deadlines we need to meet, so I see tests somewhat replicate the pressure and anxiety we have put on us.

I only took one standardized test outside of the Iowa assessments and it was a test for AP lang

Because of covid we were allowed to take the test "at home" but I took the test in the middle of my work shift sitting in my coworkers truck. My parents made me take the assessment and I got a 2 out of 6.

OVER ASSIGNING HOMEWORK MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN PARTICIPATION. Nobody is gonna turn in homework if it's too much. And even if there is an opportunity to resubmit it, they are just concerned about the next giant homework assignment.

I feel like homework should be work that is going to beneficial to you and help you understand the material. Not all homework needs to busy work but it should work that gets the concept over until the next quiz or teacher. I don't think that teacher should give their students 50 problem questions and make it due the next day.

I disagree, math is the one subject where "over assigning" doesn't apply. Math is weird in the sense that repetition is the only way to learn after the initial process is taught. Other subjects may fall into the over assigning falacy but math is led and bred by repetition.

Getting over assigned with homework in math really helped me. It kept the problems in my head so I know how to do them when the test came. Repetition made sure I wasn't confused and actually know the formulas to use on problems.

i use to talk to my teachers about how much homework I had and that i couldn't get it all done and most of my teachers just told me to turn it in whenever and they would take off late points and that would put stress on me, but other teachers would allow me to do my work in class. My AP Physics teacher would assign homework and give us in class time to start it and then if it wasn't done by the start of next class you could work on in throughout the lesson and then turn it in at the end of the class. I found this way more relaxing as I knew I could get help if I need it and also that I was actually able to do my work without the stress of late work points being taken.

Even if you do have time to do a ton of homework it's not healthy to go from school, to work, to more school, then waking up to do the same thing over again for 9 months. Students need time to relax, its a necessity. Especially if they expect good grades. Mental health is so important in schools, and grades usually reflect your mental health and how you are doing.

I believe homework is necessary but I don't think it should be graded. It should be a way for students to go over the material learned in class to check for understanding. As the teacher you should collect it to see your students understanding to know what else you need to go over. Standard assessments are reliable because they show were a student is at before we place them in a class that they are not ready for or put them in a class that is not challenging them the way it is supposed to.
