Ponyboy got a low score in openness. Openness describes a person’s tendency to think in abstract, complex ways. High scorers tend to associate ideas and see relationships between things. Low scorers tend to see things more literally, and focus more on the practical, straightforward, and concrete. Low Openness scorers are more likely to spend their free time enjoying mainstream entertainment, including sports, movies, and pop music. They do not tend to be interested in art and usually avoid high-brow cultural activities like the opera or the ballet.

Ponyboy got a moderate score in Conscientiousness. Conscientiousness describes a person’s ability to exercise self-discipline and control in order to live out their goals. High scorers are organized and determined, and are able to forego immediate gratification for the sake of long-term achievement. Low scorers are impulsive and easily sidetracked. The concept of Conscientiousness focuses on a problem we all have to face should I do what feels good now, or instead do what is less fun but will pay off in the future? Some people are more likely to choose fun in the moment, and thus are low in Conscientiousness. Others are more likely to work doggedly toward their goals, which is why they are high in this trait.

His score for Conscientious is in the moderate range, indicating that fairly average in tendency to respond to impulses. He probably has some long-term goals and are fairly successful in pursuing them, but can be sidetracked sometimes when a particularly attractive diversion presents itself.

Ponyboy got a low score in extroversion.Extroversion describes a person’s inclination to seek stimulation from the outside world, especially in the form of attention from other people. Extroverts engage actively with others in order to earn friendship, admiration, power, status, excitement, and romance. Introverts tend to conserve their energy, and do not work as hard to earn these social rewards.

Motivation

Ponyboy's motivation is partially the fact that Darry "... wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door." (p.44)"I was running away. It was plain to me that Darry didn't want me around."(p.44)This is why he was motivated to get a new start. Another part of Ponyboy's motivation is that he wants to go to college and be a good runner. "I made the
honor roll at school all the time and might be a future track star. Oh, yeah, I forgot--- I'm on the A-squad track team, the youngest one. I'm a good runner."(p.9 This shows that he has a talent and he uses that as motivation in the book.

One of Ponyboy's strengths is that he brings the soc's and the greasers together. He is also very likable and even though he is shy he speaks from the heart and brings people closer. Ponyboy helps, loves and cares for johnny because he does not have anyone else to care for him. Like when Ponyboy thought "... what he hated that worse than getting whipped. He would have run away a million times if we hadn't been there. If it hadn't been for me and the gang, Johnny would never have known what love and affection are."(p.11) That is an example of when Ponyboy helps johnny start to forget that his family by being his closest friend. Which is a strength of Ponyboy's.

One of Ponyboy's flaws is that he is pretty shy with most people. sometimes even around the gang like when he "...tried to think of something to say. I'm usually pretty quiet around people, even the gang." (p.11)"I have quite a rep for being quiet, almost as quiet as Johnny."(p.34) He even describes himself as "... a handsome, dark boy with a reckless grin and a hot temper. A tough, tow-
headed boy with a cigarette in his mouth and a bitter grin on his hard face. Remembering-
-- and this time it didn't hurt--- a quiet, defeated-looking sixteen-year-old whose hair needed cutting badly and who had black eyes with a frightened expression to them."(p.153)

Ponyboy is a protagonist because he is nice and does good things such as helping johnny, and just being kind in general. Like the gang helped johnny too if it hadn't been "... for me and the gang, Johnny would never have known what love and affection are."(p.11) Ponyboy is a dynamic character because his feelings are changing over time like how he sees himself. Like at the end he sees himself as "... a handsome, dark boy with a reckless grin and a hot temper. A tough, tow-
headed boy with a cigarette in his mouth and a bitter grin on his hard face. Remembering--- and this time it didn't hurt--- a quiet, defeated-looking sixteen-year-old whose hair needed cutting badly and who had black eyes with a frightened expression to them."(p.153) Pony boy is also a round character because you cant describe him with one trait. He is shy, kind, funny, and he brings people together, ext.

Setting

The setting of the outsiders is an integral setting. One of the reasons is the fact that they are in a city where rich people and poor people are separated. This setting sets expectations that the greasers and socs are not supposed to like each other which causes the conflict that makes the plot happen. That is why the setting is integral. The Socs are described as “the West-side rich kids.”Whereas the Greasers are described as “poorer than the Socs and the middle class.”Because of their environment and their surroundings the setting is the pushing force of the conflict. That is a little bit about the setting in the outsiders.

Conflict

The conflict in the outsiders is a person vs. person conflict. There is a very large conflict in the outsiders that is very obvious. It is the rivalry between the Socs and the Greasers. Throughout the whole book it is very clear that they are supposedly opposites. They are practically forced to not like each other also the conflict drives the story and causes the story to move along. This particular conflict shapes the characters. It also causes unwanted actions such as when Johnny… “killed that boy.

Bob, the handsome Soc”(49). Johnny the nice, kind, and shyish greaser would never do something like this but the rivalry caused a fight in which Johnny killed a soc. The conflict caused him to do something horrid that he would otherwise never do. That is why this conflict affects the story and the characters.
