There are 18 employer videos and related activities. The videos show people talking about the job they do. Each video is 5 to 10 minutes long. 

There are resources for each of the 6 Areas.

Career Discovery aims to:

• Support learners to begin to understand the links between learning and the workplace

• Broaden the horizons of young learners

• Introduce pupils to employers who can inspire, inform, and motivate them

• Challenge career limiting beliefs around gender, race and background

• Raise career aspirations

• Address topics that include the Welsh language, rurality, and equality

🎸 Band in a Day
A fun, fast-paced workshop where students (ages 7–18) learn guitar, bass, drums, and vocals—then form a band and perform together by the end of the day.

🎧 Young Songwriters & Producers
Students explore songwriting and music production using professional equipment, creating and recording their own original tracks.

🎚️ Young DJs
An introduction to DJing, covering beatmatching, mixing, and building live sets using industry-standard gear.

🎭 Drama – Musical Theatre
Combining singing, dancing, and acting, this workshop develops performance skills and can lead to accredited qualifications for ages 6–18.

Please note: These workshops are not fully funded and there is a cost involved. However, we’re happy to work with schools to explore options that suit your needs and budget.

St Cenydd Community School in Caerphilly - Case Study

The maths circle at St Cenydd Community School in Caerphilly is a hub for aspiring and curious problem solvers. One pupil announced, “This just feels like home!”

The dedicated mentor, Mrs Ricketts, has created a space which is both challenging and supportive. Each session is a unique opportunity to see how maths can fit into many roles and future pathways.

“When I’m older, I want to be an engineer, and Miss has shown us maths in different jobs. In the summer term, we’re going to this engineering company, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Another pupil shared: “I want to be an accountant when I’m older, and maths circles have motivated me to do maths at university.”

The circle has a distinct vibe from their usual lessons.

“They’re more challenging than our maths lessons,” one pupil explained, “and we learn different things, which means they’re not just an extra lesson.”

Resilient mindsets and good mathematical behaviours are always encouraged in their weekly gathering. ”I really like to use the academic vocabulary we practice in maths circles.” added another.

The “Mathematician of the Week” and attendance awards celebrate the wins. Progress, hard work, and commitment are cheered, and positive habits form.

One pupil recalled: “My favourite moment was the first maths circle. Even though I missed the getting to know each other meeting, it was still very fun, because it’s really different from my other lessons. And I was awarded mathematician of the week.”

Mrs Ricketts understood that the social side of maths circles matters, and so early on she organised a ‘get to know each other’ trip to the Bristol Aerospace Museum.

“The goal for me was to show them the world, show them where maths could take them…maths took us to the skies!” Her mission is clear: “I want pupils to know you belong here. You’re going places.”

The supportive side of the circle glows all around the classroom.

“The curriculum itself is phenomenal… so that allows me to focus a lot on the mentoring side.”

The impact of Mrs Ricketts’ work on her pupils is inspiring.

“They have all shone at different times and come out of their shells…One has become so much more positive… she’s now asking her maths teacher for GCSE past papers.

Another had a meeting with the governors…he just absolutely sparkled when talking about Axiom Maths.”

And spending time leading maths circles has started to influence her teaching too.

“Sometimes as teachers we get so hung up on evidencing pupil progress in that one hour lesson that we prompt and “fill the silence”. The silence screams progress in our axiom circles. The pupils are thinking hard, making choices, making mistakes and overcoming all sorts of problem solving battles. They are becoming better problem solvers and that is progress. This has definitely impacted my teaching.” 

For those contemplating joining a maths circle, a pupil advised: “I would tell them not to be nervous when joining, because it’s a really relaxing experience, and if you take in what you learn, it’ll be worthwhile.”

Mrs Ricketts closed with supportive advice for those looking to help their pupils flourish:

“Advice to someone who wants to build that community spirit: get to know them, find out their likes, their dislikes, their interests, and foster them and show them where maths can take them by doing those little things.”

Have a Go is designed to provide learners aged 3 – 16 with opportunities to have a go at a one-off hands-on activity or workshop to support schools with the delivery of the Expressive Arts Area of Learning and Experience. The fund covers the five disciplines of the Expressive Arts Area of Learning and Experience art, dance, drama, film and digital media and music.

The activity can be delivered by either an arts organisation or a creative practitioner and can take place either at school or at suitable location within Wales. The activity can be during school hours or as an extra-curricular activity. It can be a single session or take place across several days.

The fund offers grants of up to £1,500 and applications can be made by state-maintained schools, pupil referral units and/or arts and cultural organisations in Wales.

Have a Go supports the delivery of the Programme for Government 2021-26 and the National Plan for Music Education.

• 🎓 Georgia is currently studying Aeronautical Engineering at the University of South Wales while working at Aerfin Ltd in Newport.

• ✈️ She made history as Aerfin’s first female aeronautical engineering apprentice.

• 🏅 Georgia has already achieved bronze and gold medals at the Inspiring Skills Competition Wales Manufacturing Team Challenge.

This hands-on workshop introduced learners to the foundations of electricity and electronics through simple investigation and purposeful making. Pupils explored how electrical systems work, built functioning circuits, and linked their understanding to real-life technologies.

What pupils learned:

• Pupils were introduced to the idea of electronics in real-world contexts.

• Identified components such as battery, motor, switch, lamp.

• Understood that electricity needs a complete loop to flow.

Building a Circuit – Flying Saucer Project

Learners built a simple working circuit to power a motor and launch a fan.

Curriculum links:

• Created and improved models or prototypes using materials and components.

• Understood that systems rely on the successful interaction of parts.

What pupils learned:

• How to build a basic circuit.

• How a switch controls electricity.

• Used circuits to achieve a specific function (movement).

🎯 Overall Learning Outcomes (Year 4, 50-minute session)

By the end of the session, pupils:

• Were introduced to key components: batteries, motors, switches, lamps.

• Built and explained a simple electrical circuit.

• Understood that electricity flows through a complete loop.

• Predicted, tested, and observed how circuits behaved when components changed.

• Recognised simple cause and effect in circuits.

• Understood basic control using switches.

• Made links between classroom activities and real-life electronics.

Today, Torfaen Aspirations supported 60 Year 5 and 6 pupils from Pontnewydd Primary School and St David's Primary School to take part in an inspiring STEAM-focused day, delivered in partnership with Big Pit and the Royal Air Force.

Learners engaged in a range of hands-on workshops, including:

• Lego Spike Prime Build & Code Humanitarian Aid Challenge

• Theory of Flight Pop-Out Glider Build Challenge

• Underground Tour of Big Pit

It was fantastic to see the pupils so fully engaged throughout the day, developing their knowledge, skills, and curiosity in STEAM subjects. Experiences like these play a vital role in raising aspirations and helping young people explore future career pathways.

The group also enjoyed a fun and challenging virtual escape room activity, explored different artificial intelligence tools, and even got hands-on by creating wildflower seed bombs to take home.

This inspiring project, delivered by Her Place and supported by Torfaen Aspirations, has given the girls a wider understanding of the diverse opportunities available within the technology sector. It has helped to broaden their horizons, opening their eyes to the exciting possibilities these careers can offer, and encouraging them to think more confidently about their future pathways.

Don’t let a limited budget stop you doing something incredible with your students. We offer bursaries of £700 so you can give them the chance to get hands-on with STEM. It might be the first step to inspiring the inventors, innovators and designers of the future.

We want more young people to start thinking about a possible future in STEM. So we offer bursaries to help inspire students who don’t necessarily already have a passion for science or engineering. We particularly hope this funding will help engage young people from groups underrepresented in engineering.

During the visit, they took part in a range of interactive activities that gave them valuable insight into the work carried out at Transport for Wales. The girls learned about careers within the organisation, explored how buildings are designed and constructed, and developed their problem-solving and teamwork skills through a challenging labyrinth activity.

The “Her Place” project, supported by Torfaen Aspirations, continues to inspire young girls by introducing them to the wide range of roles available within the technology sector and encouraging them to consider future pathways in STEM-related careers.

e session also strengthened a range of STEAM skills. The children developed their scientific observation skills by examining bee behaviour and pollination, built technological awareness through exploring beekeeping tools, used engineering thinking when learning about hive structures, and expressed artistic creativity through sketching bees and honeycomb patterns.

Lisa will certainly be welcomed back to Blaenavon as she made a huge impact in the classroom.

Delivered by Engineers and Pro Dancers

Our science workshops align with the National Curriculum and are ideal for Primary and Secondary school students.

We also cater for holiday camps, summer camps, corporate events, CSR and other STEM events.

A total of 41 Year 4 pupils (23 on Day 1 and 18 on Day 2) took part in the intervention. The group represented a broad range of abilities, and the practical nature of the project ensured that all learners could participate meaningfully. School staff worked alongside the activity leader to ensure accessibility, model good teamwork and support children’s understanding of each stage of the process.

The intervention unfolded across three structured stages:

1. Construction Phase – Pupils followed instructions to build the chassis of their go-karts using wooden parts, wheels, axles, and joining materials. They followed a set of given written and pictorial instructions to assemble their go-karts.

2. Design & Aerodynamics Phase – Pupils created bodywork for their go-karts, applying knowledge of aerodynamics and streamlining. They experimented with shapes and materials to reduce air resistance.

3. Racing & Evaluation Phase – All pupils participated in a final race event, observing performance, comparing outcomes, and reflecting on how design choices affected speed and stability.

STEAM Skills Developed

• Engineering Design — constructing, following detailed instructions, refining

• Scientific Enquiry — predicting, testing, evaluating

• Mathematical Reasoning — measuring, estimating, comparing

• Digital Competence — researching designs, recording results, presenting findings

• Creative Thinking — designing aerodynamic bodywork

• Collaboration — communication, shared roles, problem-solving

Pupil Voice

Pupil voice provided valuable insight into the impact and enjoyment of the project. Learners expressed clear enthusiasm and recognised the breadth of skills they developed:

“It was very fun and educational because we learned a bit of history, Welsh, PE. We learnt engineering and it was very fun for all of us!”

“I think it was very fun because we got to learn how to use tools like spanners, nuts and bolts.”

“I think it was very good fun because we got to build the go-karts ourselves, decorate it and then race.”

And a particularly reflective comment highlighted the value of the experience:

“I feel like it was a really good experience. We are all kids and most of us wouldn't know how to make go-karts or have the materials to make go-karts. We learnt how to make them, how to handle sharp tools and we all worked together.

Weekly in-school band lessons that celebrate fun, individuality and creativity!

The Year 7 pupils from Croesyceiliog School and Year 5 and 6 pupils from the neighbouring primary schools on Friday.

Projects included bee hotels using 3D printing technology, interactive rainforest explorations, investigations into biology and human development, and creative experiments such as slime-making and acid and alkali testing.

Time: 5:30pm

Duration: Approximately 2 hours, plus interval

Featuring approximately 100 pupils, performing numbers from live rock bands, vocal ensembles, musical theatre, classical instrumental duets and more.

Year 5 and 6 pupils had the opportunity to participate in a carousel of six interactive workshops, each designed to highlight different career pathways, including the film industry, engineering, science, and technology.

Throughout the morning, pupils engaged enthusiastically in a variety of hands-on activities that allowed them to explore new skills and experiences. Activities included:

• Investigating forensic science techniques

• Taking on the role of an engineer

• Learning how water is cleaned and treated

• Exploring the uses of robotics in different industries

• Discovering human anatomy with Science Made Simple

• Identifying the equipment needed to work in a range of environments

The sessions were highly engaging and provided pupils with valuable insight into real-world applications of STEAM subjects. Importantly, the experience also encouraged them to consider future career possibilities and build confidence in trying new and exciting challenges.

This inspiring event has effectively prepared the pupils for their upcoming careers day tomorrow.

Our whole school theme this term is ‘We are the World’ in line with the current world cup. Each class has taken a country and we are studying the culture, music, art and fesitval traditions of that country. Through the musical theme, we are looking at the science of sound, how this affects how we play instruments and create songs. Using the art traditions of countries the children make and create items to wear for the festival such as, masks and head dresses. Finally, each class will perform a dance during the festival for parents and the community.

There were 98 children involved in the intervention, 35 of whom are eFSM and 14 have ALN.

Each of the four classes were involved in a music and dance workshop. These included one with a focu on Ghana, one for South Africa and two for Brazil. The children were taught traditional moves and music based upon that country and these were rehearsed and practised in the session. The skills developed were artistic and encompassed music and dance, rhythm, tempo and beat.

This intervention was important as it gave the children skills to improve their music and dance knowledge, their movement and artistic skills while learning about culture, creativity and diversity of our world in a fun and engaging way. It was also attuned to the stage of skill of the children. It was absolutely amazing. This will allow our children ti incorporate this into their summer carnival and use these skills to perform for an audience.

All children in every class enjoyed this experience. They had fun, were engaged throughout and all came away understanding story, music and dance from the culture they were studying.

The younger children learned through a traditional story. They then reaenacted this story through music, incorporating beat, traditional steps and of course the music. The older children learned more about the dance steps and music of Brazil, they created phrases of moves, which were then combined to create a whole dance. They discussed the steps that they knew from Brazil and the instructor ensured that these were placed into the dance.

All children increased in their skill and confidence to perform a cultural dance. This will benefit them when they perform in the whole school carnival.

Staff commented on the excellent behaviour of all of the children who took part. In fact, one of our children who has had significant trauma in his life and often refuses to take part in performance, ‘had the time of his life’ he engaged, was totally focused and didn’t miss a beat’ his teacher said.
