The lives of teenagers before and during the Japanese Occupation had changes in leisure, school life, food and jobs. When the Japanese Occupation occurred, they had the mindset of being biased to specific races. Hence, the teenagers started being affected and influenced by this, hanging out with their close friends, or what the Japanese perceived as “acceptable”, and in smaller groups too. Also, the students were forced to study Japanese and all subjects had to be taught in that language. It was a sudden change as in the past, all subjects were taught in the student’s own comfortable Mother Tongue language and now they were introduced to an unfamiliar one, thus finding it hard to cope and manage with. Before the occupation, locals could get their food and supplies however they want and was easy for them. But during the occupation, the Japanese issued ration cards to control the supply of rice and other essential supplies. People could only get a portion everyday and sometime not having enough to feed the family. People would be at their wit’s end if they lose or do not have a ration card, not being able to get food for them and their family. Therefore, compared to how food supply was not a problem, locals led difficult lives trying to feed themselves. Life before Japanese Occupation was also more carefree, but when the Japanese took over, their life became miserable. They were constantly under surveillance, being tortured, doing things they dislike.Teenagers have to work harder and were always under stress, compared to the relaxing and comfortable jobs they had, it is much tougher. Therefore, seeing how much the teenagers suffered during Japanese Occupation, the smile that was once on their face replaced by the hardships they faced, their lives had changed drastically before and during the Japanese Occupation.
