All the animals worked even harder than usual with Napoleon in command of Animal Farm. A new law states their Sunday afternoon work is optional, but if they choose not to, their rations would be reduced by 50%. The backbreaking work results in their wavered determination, but the pigs boost their moral by saying they're working for Animal Farm, not Mr. Jones. On the other hand, Boxer worked particularly hard and never complained.

The farm owns a mining quarry that has limestone. This can be used to reconstruct the broken down windmill. The issue lies in the ability to break down the large boulders. The animals can't use human tools like a pickaxe or crowbar to do the job. The only option they can think of is raising and dropping the boulders, causing them to break into portable chunks. This process lasts until late summer, when they gather enough limestone.

Despite the hard work at the farm, the animals have enough to eat. Another issue arises, which is a shortage of iron, nails, and paraffin oil. Since the farm can't produce these goods themselves, Napoleon resorts to cooperating with a human middleman named "Mr. Whymper" to exchange goods.

Upon hearing this plan, the other animals are taken aback. Squealer explains to the crowd the founding principles of Animal Farm didn't specify trading with a human as illegal. He then tells anyone who thought wrong fell for Snowball's lies.

Mr. Whymper visits Animal Farm every Monday to take orders from Napoleon. The pigs began living in the farmhouses and even slept on the bed, which breaks the principles of Animal Farm. Clover is annoyed, and asks Muriel to read to her the principles. Both of them discover it reads as "No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets." Squealer then tells Clover she must've read the rules wrong. He then gaslights the other animals into agreeing on the pigs using the beds for "the greater good."

A very strong storm kicks in during this time, and knocks down rooftrees, uprooted an elm tree, and blew away the flagstaff. When the animals grouped to check in on the damage, they discover the windmill which they worked hard on crumbled down. Napoleon then goes on a rant, blaming everything on Snowball. He then offers a bushel of apples to anyone who kills the "traitor."
