Members of all different types of communities have been affected by recent events, some of which Vice President Joe Biden got the opportunity to speak with. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, so to name a few deaths from instances of police brutality have caused an uprising of realizations across the globe that it's time for unity and strength among people.

How is identity both personal and communal?

My official answer to this question: identity is both personal and communal because each one affects the other and they eventually coalesce. What makes up one individual's personal identity, can also make an impact on what identities make them feel a part of a broader community.

Racism is a very controversial topic here in the United States. The dictionary definition of racism is “the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or race”. Basically, if one uses ethnicity to determine whether or not they are better than someone, they are racist. The act of “racism” also allows certain ethnic groups to discriminate against other ethnic groups through the act of institutional racism. Institutionalized racism can be put on other ethnic groups when an ethnic group is able to deny another group the bare minimum/standard human rights. Though America is now old enough to walk on it’s own and has the knowledge on how to keep peace, racism is still throwing us off. The issue is still prevailing. Racism is the reason we were fighting unnecessary wars and still are. I believe that racism is a deeply rooted problem within America and that damage control needs to be done. But we can only begin to make a change when change is ready to be accepted. When people are willing to open their minds and become educated on the history of America. When school systems begin to teach us about the *real* foundation that the United States was built on. When every American can unite and say "all and everyone are equal." not just on paper, but to actually believe and dispel the ideology of racial superiority and just superiority. It all starts with us.

This is an example of what news sites have been doing during this movement/crisis. The Washington Post provided resources for people to really educate themselves on racism in America and how to at least understand it better. (yes it's gray, for some reason it isn't showing the cover photo of the article, but if you click the gray area it'll still take you to the article)

Racism and Police Brutality Roots

Tensions between the police and black communities are nothing new. The police system's foundation was a systematically racist one. Back during the times of slavery, something called 'slave patrols' were formed, meant to enforce slavery laws (vigilante style), punish runaway slaves and capture and return them to their owners. This article accurately demonstrates how racist ideals and cultural perspectives within the justice system have been so deeply rooted that they’ve actually carried on into modern day society. Understandings of cultural pasts influence personal values and the choices we make in the present by creating a ‘precedent’ of what to follow as a reference for future generations or it pushes them to do better and learn from past mistakes that have occurred.. However, today’s generation and their understanding of these past/presently featured instances of police brutality and racism have led to possibly the largest movement in the history of America to push for effective change.
