My grandma used to own a garden on her property and ran into some racist controversy where the cops got involved. Her plants weren’t even bothering the neighbors but because of her skin color it was “too tall “ so me and my family decided to knock on their door and try to talk it out. Once they seen how there is an army behind my grandma they backed down really fast. They were trying to attack an old black lady because they thought it was only her.

My grandfather grows his own foods in his garden in Wisconsin and gives the fruits and veggies to his friends. He prefers to make his own food because he trusts where it comes from.

I was part of a movement when I was in high school. I ran an Instagram account and wrote an article asking for gun control laws. I was able to interview students from both sides of the argument and it was really interesting. I was also able to be creative and create posts that I felt helped communicate our purpose to students at my school.

One concept that stood out to me from today's lecture was disruptive capacity and electoral capacity. These capacities stood out to me because Ron Finely demonstrated them while creating his gardens and sharing it with the community.
One time in middle school I took part in our community garden over the summer by watering and planting everyday with my classmates. This was our school's first garden, and we decided to create it for everyone in the school to be involved in taking care of something that means a lot to our class.

One movement I remember being a part of when it first started was college athletes starting to get paid in college for their name, image, and likeness. While it seems pretty normal to hear college athletes making thousands of dollars at their schools today, I was able to be a part of the movement when it first took off and allowed myself to get paid for my name. Growing up watching college basketball, the new changes to the institution of the NCAA were a big deal to what everyone knew college sports for.

The garden concept really stood out to me because I had never really taken into consideration the power that a garden can give you and your community in the sense of feeding yourself and bringing people together. A time I took action was last semester during my project we raised awareness for food insecure students and held interviews and posted flyers about the food pantry. How can we use our actions to help other people create their own actions?

Back in high school, I participated in a blood drive to increase awareness on donating blood and hand out flyers to teach people more about the prcoess. We organized an event for Blood Cross, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I was part of a cheer team back in high school. I lived in a small town and every February there was an annual parade called Gold Rush. When this parade was coming close I decided to arrange for the cheerleaders to be in the parade. Through organizing the choreography and getting the other girls to contribute I managed to have us a part of the parade. My coaches saw me as a reliable person and trusted me to take on this role. If I didn't take action the cheerleaders would have never been in the parade.

After learning about Ron Finley's story, I related the idea to something I worked on back home in the Bay. There is a neighborhood in my community that houses those who require government-assisted living. I had a personal connection to this community as I had multiple friends living there. I worked to create a garden and make more food accessible to the people living here. In addition to these people getting some help, I was able to collaborate and get closer to those in my community. I think doing things like this, while they may be small, is very impactful.

One concept that stood out to me was when Finley described what he was doing as gangster. I thought it was interesting because it highlights how others can view his efforts as uncool. This concept also reflects the barriers between individuals and finding/creating solutions.
This concept is something that I have seen on many different occasions, people judge and even make fun of individuals for doing things that they see as unimportant or lame when in reality that person is taking action for a better future.

Finley spoke so fondly of his community and how he wants to make a positive change through using a garden. Before I moved to Arizona, I used to volunteer regularly at the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House supports the families of the kids admitted in the hospital for a long period of time. They generally live too far to commute to the hospital everyday. When I volunteered there, we would make meals for these families that are staying in the house, typically dinner, but not always. These families are so grateful because it is one less thing that they need to think about.

Higher ups did not like how Finely took action and made a community garden and how they did not have full power over him. Also when Finley said how they were going up against him show up much control high up wants on civilians.

I once participated in a community cleanup event by the school in my area. A lot of different kinds of people came together in a park that was full of trash and litter on the side of the road on a sunny Friday morning. We set out to return the park to its natural beauty with gloves, trash bags, and a shared desire to make a change. I felt like I had a mission and a sense of community as we worked together to pick up trash, pull weeds, and clear paths. We talked and laughed while we worked.

The quote by Zeynep Tufekci where she had talked about how social media and hashtags can bring awareness to a bigger audience. I connect with this quote because we saw a lot of this happening in 2020 when covid had first broke out to the world. We also saw this with the BLM protests as many people were pushing the message of that protest through social media.
I also feel a connection toward Ron Finley's story as back in middle school we would do various projects where we would go to local communities and plant various trees, and plants and create gardens. We would do this at the elementary schools in our area, or assisted living, and lesser developed neighborhoods. I think by doing this not only were we giving back but we were able to connect to our community better as well.

A small plot of land with a secret lay in the middle of a busy city area where concrete controlled the city. Mrs. Thompson, an old woman who had lived in the neighborhood for decades, cared for the community garden. Mrs. Thompson's garden was more than just a bunch of plants; it was a sign of strength and rebellion against unfair systems. For economic growth and urban development reasons, the city had planned to turn the land into a parking lot many years ago. But Mrs. Thompson and her neighbors, many of whom were low-income people of color, saw the garden as an important green area which is rare to find in this area. To preserve the garden, they held protests, wrote messages to city officials, and even went to court to try and save the garden.

I had once participated in some form of a community clean up that was in efforts to restore my neighborhood due to rubbish and other things scattering all throughout the neighborhood. It was a time for the community to come together and fix it because the village of my town was not sending people to take care of it. I found this a way to not only take care of my surrounding area, but a way to connect with the community. Obviously it was not the brightest thing to do, but in retrospect it was a time to meet others and connect on different topics.

I participated in a campaign called the "Von Wong Campaign" with the school. We were able to pick something that we personally felt would help the community around us. We decided to go with mental health and become an outlet for the people to reach out to if they are struggling. Our main focus was creating a safe space people felt comfortable going to instead of feeling like there is no one to talk to. We took action by creating more resources for students, teachers, staff, etc. to reach out to and we actively tried to break down the stigma around mental health. We got data from the community to better help our campaign by using tools such as surveys and polls. In the end we were able to have a lasting impact because we were able to open more resources at the school which is still a resource that is still actively going.

A connection I had was to Ron Finley's garden and how he made neglected parkways into gardens. At home, an artist paints murals on abandoned buildings to bring back their lost beauty and turn the community into something beautiful that everyone can enjoy. I participated in an "SOS Cuba" movement and protest in my Cuban populated city. The residents of Cuba have been, and are currently getting no freedom or resources. They have no food, no water, and no medical care. This movement started around the time of Covid when people were rapidly dying due to the lack of resources and medical care in Cuba. Covid effected many Cubans because they were deathly ill, or their friends and family were dying. I started by posting awareness on my story and protesting in my city to try my best to help make a difference.

One time I took "action" is my freshman year of college when I go to Z-Mansion to work in the kitchen making food and hot chocolate for the community in need. We would then go outside and pass around the hot chocolate on cold mornings and were able to learn more about the community members that live on streets or suffer from food poverty. 2. "Being a gardener that's gangster being educated that's gangster building your community that's gangster". I found this quote by Ron Finley interesting as it shows how he feels about his community and its well being. In his video he talks about how he was threatened to be arrested because of his garden, however Ron blatantly disregarded this threat as he felt he was being oppressed by authorities. I feel like Ron was trying to better his community by enhancing the scenery by adding his garden and the authorities had no right to intervene.

A time when I took action. In the city I live in people wanted to take away a natural park that had been a wildlife reserve to build baseball fields. There was a big protest in my town with people refusing to give this aria up and my family joined as a part of this. We were being oppressed by those who were looking to make money off of this hand off. In the end the park stayed as so many people stood up for the wild life that lived in this aria.

A time when I took action was during high school. It was towards the end my senior year and I had been sick for most of the year missing close to 100 days of school and failing 2 of my classes. I was then diagnosed with celiac disease making my life more challenging, having to release I will not be able to eat the same or my organs will start to fail. I needed to help myself and get myself onto the path of graduating in 2 months. So I went to all my teachers and thankfully they were generous enough to help me out but I had to work for it. I spent the rest of my 2 months working as hard as I could in school and stay healthy at the same time. I ended up passing all my classes with A's and B's and graduating healthy with my friends.

A time I took action was when I volunteered for several months in my city's lower-income neighborhoods. I would give classes to little kids about morals and values and about how to be a good human being to those around you. We would talk about being honest, helpful, kind, respectful, etc. We would end the class by having a snack and a fun activity whether it was painting, dancing, playing, etc. Although many of these kids lived in the same neighborhoods, they didn't really know each other. At the end of the classes, they all got a long extremely well and become friends. It was a nice way to bring those in a community together.
