Are these not good things for America to see—things from which we can all learn?”

Claim: Family support and cultural background can have a tremendous impact on the outcome of a person's life, especially with a child's dreams for their future.
Evidence:
1) "And yet my family never watched his (Bob) lacrosse games. We did watch some of his marathons, but that wasn't until he was in his 20s." This brings up the point that some families don't support their children in their dreams when they are young. Bob was already successful and doing what he loved by the time his family started supporting him.
2) "Still, it is hard not to wonder if the places from which the Chuas and Lins emigrated played a factor in their parenting styles. The elder Chuas came from a rich Chinese enclave in the Philippines. Faced with a hostile native population, they circled the wagons and emphasized tradition. The Lins, on the other hand, came from Taiwan, where "Chineseness" now includes many Western notions, especially among the educated." This explains some of the cultural differences between the two families and why the parents raised their children the way they did.
3) "Bob never did become a doctor, though; and neither did I. It wasn't until my younger sister came along that someone in the family finally wore a white coat." This adds an aspect of the pressure that was placed on them as children. Their parents just wanted them to be successful, but ended up putting a lot of pressure on their kids in the process.
